It's the opening day of Crossrail's Elizabeth line, and the first train on the new section left Abbey Wood at 06.30, whilst others got on the first train from Paddington at 06.33 - here's everything that happened, on a momentous, purple rainy day!
Thanks to Karl and Beverly for their assistance filming, to TubeMapper Luke for photography, and for everyone we met and spoke to during the day!

I’m an American living in Orlando and have followed you, Geoff, for quite long time. I’m also a huge fan of the U.K., Ireland, and all of Europe, along with great rail travel. Where I live we have next to no really great public transport like the Tube in London, and I’m always so envious of your system. I love visiting places in the U.S. like Chicago and New York that have decent public transport, but it still pales in comparison to the system in London. I love how iconic the whole brand is, to the point of selling merchandise, but also how well kept and organized the whole system is. I can’t wait for my next opportunity to get back to London, but I just wish we could improve our systems in the U.S. too.

I am sure that this video will become the most important piece of work you have ever done Geoff - for you and for us all! It is not just about the history that has happened today - without any doubt, the opening of CrossElizPurp is something similar to opening of the Underground 150 plus years ago - This video simply tells a story of so many amazing people, who designed, built and managed this complicated process, who will run, maintain and operate this railway every day giving their best. It is about the people who will use it, for whom this piece of infrastructure will become a part of everyday life and about the people who are just super excited about it being finally open. Geoff, the fact that you took your time to spend this amazing day with everybody described above as well as your personal friends, fans and officials (who were all equal today despite different roles) gave us the most beautiful and wholehearted 17 minutes you've ever delivered to us! ❤️ This video will become a statement of equality and humanity for future generations! Even though I am writing this comment from far away from Poland, today in my thoughts I was together with all of you there, on the Elizabeth Line in London. Really enjoyed riding the line on the opening day. What an amazing atmosphere! The whole thing is great in every respect except for two things: Firstly the lighting throughout the trains and many areas of the stations feels a bit dull. I guess that's intended to create a calming atmosphere. Secondly the lack of toilets beyond the barrier. I was very ... errr ... 'relieved' that there were loos at Abbey Wood station. At Paddington there were no facilities other than in the mainline station as far as I could tell, despite the acres of space that are available for toilets to be installed. It's a long way from Reading to Abbey Wood for anyone with range anxiety! Can't imagine the lifts are going to smell new for very long ;)

@andrewoakeshott7759
@andrewoakeshott7759 2 жыл бұрын
@@j.wellens5660 Not really. Every major public infrastructure project in recent years has had budget and timetable overruns, both in the UK and abroad. (Interestingly, there is very little media focus on the ongoing repairs and maintenance works to the UK's vast road network, in both cases budget and timetable overruns are also commonplace). True, in the case of Crossrail a delay of 3.5 years is perhaps a bit extreme (though covid was also a factor), but on the other hand, the Germans weren't able to open their new Berlin airport for almost 10 years, even though it was basically finished! Now, are some of the cost and timetable overruns due to corruption or shoddy management? Sure. But part of the issue is also engineers being under intense political pressure to deliver incredibly complex projects in a time and budget that may just about work if everything goes exactly to plan, but things never really do in practice. Then, if there's unforeseen delays and the railway is opened "on time" but still unfinished and there happens to be a massive accident later on because safety standards weren't being met, the public outcry will be even greater. So, I think this is less about massive public infrastructure projects costing what they do and more about politicians being dishonest about the cost and complexity.
@j.wellens5660
@j.wellens5660 2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewoakeshott7759 I think we are dancing around the same point. The problem is with public sector procurement - and not just recent years! - whether it's a high profile project like the Elizabeth line or HS1/HS2, etc etc, or local schemes like the local cycle lane project close to where I live which cut ground in Oct 2021 with a stated completion date of 13 weeks, which is still far from finished. What I was trying to argue was the madness in the logic that because each consecutive major project goes more overbudget it's ok that the next one does too .

So you live in Woolwich and work in Abbey Wood - the purple line has made your leisure journeys better - That is such a relief to everyone outside of London who uses public transport. £20+bn overspent, 5yrs late, 5yrs missed revenue. They should have quietly launched this line...

My friend and I spent about 5 hours (from 10:30 - 15:30) on the new line today - it was busy! First impressions:- - The trains were mostly smooth (one wasn't); - The seats are not very comfortable (I certainly wouldn't want to travel from e.g. Shenfield all the way to e.g. Reading); and - The stations are as huge as all the photos indicated. Greater Anglia hasn't got the memo about no more 'Crossrail'; their on-board displays about the state of the various Underground lines, etc. still mention "TfL Rail"!

The opening week energy you get from huge lines opening like this is probably the best part of the experience, even watching it from outside London you still feel engaged with everyone and you feel their exitment. It is a genuine joy that you just can’t get in any other experience. The Elizabeth Line has been in development for so long so to finally see real trains rolling through real platforms carrying real people is super cool. If I ever visit London I will 100% take the time to ride on the purple train. Safe travels!

David, as someone who lives in the UK but nowhere near London, please don't think the Elizabeth Line is representative of the railway service in the UK outside of the London area. The services between the biggest cities in Northern England, such as Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield and Leeds, are light years behind what is available in the London commuter belt.

@@j.wellens5660 And again... Now, just to be clear, it's not that I agree with London's hustle culture, but 5 minutes saved in London are indeed economically significant. However, the average commuter will save a lot more time than that (Geoff also made a helpful video illustrating how much travel times between stations will be cut.). That said, what ALWAYS gets ignored in these discussions (and HS2 is another good example) is that the main benefits are not just reduced travel times, but additional and much needed capacity to the network. And if anyone has ever been on the cramped Central line (and other deep level tube lines) they'll be happy to know that this will indeed take a lot of pressure off parts of the underground network. Now, if you're from the North and your comment was related to how public infrastructure projects (and much else) in the North of England and Scotland are chronically underfunded, while London gets billions in investment, then as a Scot and someone with a dad born in Newcastle, I'm with you all the way. However, that doesn't make Crossrail any less impressive on its own merits.

@@andrewoakeshott7759 I think we are pretty much on common ground. I'm impressed with the scale and scope and potential of the Crossrail project. I'm infuriated by the budget overspend, timescale creep, and apparent lack of response to these budgetary divergences from any of our political parties or the civil servants whose job it is to oversee these projects. ( and yes - I do live/abide in/from somewhere that is north of the M25.

@@j.wellens5660 True. The fact that no one is really prepared to get to the bottom of cost and budget overruns (even if they may just be down to politicians lying about the true cost and complexity of projects) is a problem. However, I reckon that whether it's corruption, bad management or simply political dishonesty, in any case, there's a vested interest on behalf of those involved (construction firms, contractors and politicians) to leave the voting public in the dark as to the reasons why, which is certainly regrettable..
@grassytramtracks
@grassytramtracks 6 ай бұрын
@@j.wellens5660 plenty of journeys take half what they used to. I get it, I agree there ought to be more transport infrastructure outside London much much more (it's mad that Manchester and Birmingham don't have a tube) but to say it will save only 5 minutes is a little disingenuous
