GEOGRAPHY AND CULTURES CURRICULUM FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL | Guest Hollow Homeschool Curriculum
Join me as I give you a look inside Guest Hollow's High School Geography and Cultures curriculum. I am using it with upper elementary and middle school student, so I adapt it quite a bit to work for us. I'll talk about what I'm doing and what I'm not in this current situation.
Also! Today's video is in collaboration with three other lovely ladies who are also using this curriculum this year with their own children. Watch all the videos and see how we are all using this curriculum differently.

Yes! I was so excited when I realized that I could do this again with my boys in 4-5 years and it would almost be completely new if I added in some of the books that I'm skipping.

The schedule looks intense but a week could be broken down into 2 weeks!!! The mapping looks awesome!!! We do mapping activities and I feel like they help my kids to understand geography!!! We use different travel videos for geography but never used a travel book. I still have my guide book from when I was a travel agent!!!

The schedule is CRAZY intense, but it’s not intended to be all done. They say you should pick and choose what works best for your family. I love that flexibility (and there is no way I’m doing more than 1/3 of the stuff at this point).

I really like alot of the books being used, I like all the art and videos to be used. But I know myself as a homeschool mom of 20 years and I do NOT do well with buffet style curriculum. I get so overwhelmed. For me this is just WAY too much. I do appreciate it and I can see how some families would just do well with this, but I know myself and I will be so overwhelmed. Even the toned down version is too much. I think I like Beautiful Feet's World Geography they just came out with. I do appreciate your great review of this. Sonlight Core F is wonderful, but it doesn't cover all the world. We have always used Sonlight curriculum and even that can be just a bit too much for us.

I totally get what you are saying :) we definitely are working our way through all that we have very slowly. I rarely ever finish any curriculum like this in the one year allotted and I do a lot of picking and choosing. We are so really enjoying this, but we do have to make wise choices along the way as to which resources we want to give right to :) Thank you for commenting! This type of curriculum is definitely not for everyone.

There are some of the books that I'll even revisit in the upcoming years. I am sure we'll continue this over the summer and take a look at some of the content that is quite a bit more mature. 🌻

Guest hollow’s geography jr, LA, anatomy jr, and actions and reactions look so fun and interesting. There are too many courses they offer that I like at my child’s age! Will having two many literature based areas be too overwhelming? My son absolutely loves learning this way but also loves reading non fiction too.

So, it’s all about juggling, cutting out some things, and being flexible with the timing. I’m doing 2 literatures-based histories (Bookshark and Beautiful Feet Book meshed together), Geography (GH), Geography (Beautiful Feet Books), and science (GH). The Geography will be bare bones and take 2 years, I pick and choose the history portions, and science will take over a year. But as a homeschooler, I don’t feel super confined by years. We just do the next thing when we finish something.

@@CalmintheChaosHomeschool I think I recall watching your video combining the two histories. Is there a particular reason why you combined them? Was one not adequate enough?
@CalmintheChaosHomeschool
@CalmintheChaosHomeschool Жыл бұрын
Because I like elements of both? Both are completely adequate. So, I can get non-religious curriculum from a parent partnership program (read pubic charter school). So I get bookshark from them. I LOVE their readers. Then, I saw Beautiful Feet Books and really liked the look of the history books (but there are no readers, just great books to use to teach history). And they are “religious” So I had to buy this myself. So, in conclusion, both are completely fine and full curriculums, but I like some things better from each.

How many lessons are there, and how long would you say it takes to get through a lesson? I know it will depend how much of it you use, but whay about just the geography portion?

There are 36 weeks with 5 days a week. The online textbook and workbook are scheduled every 2-3 days generally and that might take about 45 mins to an hour generally including some imbedded videos. Then, see what books you add on. There is usually a literature book your child could be reading and then there are supplemental books, KZfaq videos, and activities you could also include. We are working through this slowly. So my older kids are doing 1-2 online textbook and workbook lessons a week. I read supplemental books to all my kids every other day or so. I have all of the additional KZfaq videos on a playlist and play those during our lunches at home. At the end of a section of countries, I take 1-2 weeks for my older 2 to do some activities or do some recipes. Oh, and all my kids are usually tearing a book related to the countries we are studying for their reading at their own level. It’s easy to make it 30-45 mins a day, or 2 hours, just depending on how much you choose to do. There can be a lot of history and literature in there if you want to add some 1/2 credits or additional credits as well.

That helps, thanks so much! Doing it the way you're doing it, could it be completed in a school year?
@CalmintheChaosHomeschool
@CalmintheChaosHomeschool Ай бұрын
@JTHH1234 I think if you did 3 days of online textbook/workbook and added the other things around it (dont take 1-2 weeks to add activities but do those alongside side.) it could probably be done in a year. We really only did 1 textbook lesson some weeks because I’m only planning on doing 1/2 in one year (we paired it with Sonlight F so we are focusing only on the eastern hemisphere for their first high school geography credit). So we are purposely going slower but adding in lots. It’s a great course! My girls are always talking about new they learn in the textbook.
