The less corruption, the better economy. Just a fact. But most Africans have not figured it out. Botswana, however, had a president(s) educated in Britain and a British frist lady. So they are sort of ahead of other African countries :-)

I remember reading that the IMF (International Mother Effers) approached Botswana years ago with a 'specially tailored plan' the same one they tried to sell to every poor nation. The IMF claims these are 'customized' economic plans but Joseph Stiglitz (their turned rogue former chief) says it was basically the same plan for all countries, designed to put nations into the IMF's debt. Botswana had the only leaders anywhere that saw right through the trick and sent the IMF packing. And this is why they have been doing so well while so many other African countries have not been. Good for you, Botswana!

That is not only why Botswana is prospering, it differs a lot from the rest of Africa. Lets look at the history of Botswana, First they had a good leadership like Sechele I to defeat the attacking white Boers and later good leadership like Khama III , Sebele I and Bathoen I, the Three Dikgosi, who secured the positions of a protectorate instead of a colony under the Union of South Africa or Southern Rhodesia, bitterly due to the terrible treatment of Blacks in both countries. During it's independence Botswana was the 2nd poorest country in the World, had no single University, three missionary schools, no hospitals/clinics, had only 4KM tarred road which was made for 1947 Queens visit. The British said Botswana was going to be a charity case forever. Botswana was built by Batswana from scratch, Botswana didn't even have a capital then as the former Capital Mahikeng was annexed to Union of South Africa. 90% of primary schools, secondary schools in Botswana was built by Communities selling cattle and contributing thats why most still carry "Community school" status although now under government. Botswana was so untouched compared to its neighbouring countries that they found their minerals after it's independence which they have used to finance education with great success. It is also one of few African countries, if not the only, with nationalized minerals which some countries such as Namibia have wanted to follow after. Comparing Botswana to Africa, or its neighbouring countries like Zimbabwe, Namibia and S.A, which were colonies and where black people live under white peoples segregated communities is sad. Today Botswana has reached a GDP per capita that of Turkey. Botswanas success is that of having good leadership to make sure they kept their independence and not suffer the trauma of colonialism and neocolonialism like lots of African countries did. They could easily organise themselves and build the Botswana we see today.

Don't paint a black and white picture. The IMF has also actually helped Botswana in the early years of its independence. Difference is, Botswana fully paid back that loan, contrary to many other African countries who become permanently addicted to international money & IMF / World Bank.

Botswana is a nice country. The meaning of it's flags colors are really peaceful, the blue means water needed for Botswana to exist, the black and white lines reprensenting peace and cooperation with the two races and or zebra lines. Not some red color symbolising the blood spilt for independence. And overall, Botswana is a pretty good example for other african countries in terms of a strong, and growing economy and in terms of corruption. To be honest, i was expecting Paul to mention that a civil war is or was going on in Botswana, because that's usually the case with a majority of african countries. But their wasn't a civil war and that's nice. Because most countries that had a civil war are pretty bad in terms of the strength of their economies. That's usually a thing because those countries have war economies and are only geared up for war. I'm really surprised how well Botswana's economy is doing because it's land locked. But you can ignore the fact that it's land locked because it can use the Zambeze river to get it's ships to the indian ocean. Hope the country has the 2nd largest GDP in all of Africa in the future.

Botswana sets an example all should follow. Low taxes and its openness has allowed it to prosper. It does not engage in Protectionist (unlike Zimbabwe) its a free nation. I like their attitude, rather than make themselves poor and beg for reparations, they open themselves up to investment and move on.

I spent nearly a month in Botswana last year in November/December. The country and the people there were absolutely amazing. I was there mostly for work on an experiment studying the okavango rift zone. The last few days I got to visit the moremi reserve. That was an amazing experience I'll never forget. putting out thousands of temporary seismometers in remote area we met a lot of interesting people, all of which were incredibly nice and interested in what we were doing.

Botswana have good relations with countries that hate each other yes like u mentioned Russia USA Pakistan etc that's cos Botswana dsnt take sides. We don't help you to hate ur enemy. We find a common ground and build a relationship with it. In Botswana we don't generalize, if ure rude ure rude we don't call your nation rude or ur Tribe cos of that we live in harmony with everyone and deal with individuals where there are disagreements n misunderstandings. We have a saying that says Ntwa kgolo ke ya molomo meaning the biggest war is a war of words. So we sit and talk to resolve our conflict. We are slowly getting our land back peacefully that Namibia stole from us back in the years. Cos we believe in sitting down to settle all our differences

Very nice summary. You've got lots of facts about everywhere, it seems. :) I've spent 10 months total in Botswana (including going back just before COVID shutdowns, to visit for the first time in 17 years!). Much of what you say is right on, to my knowledge, and some beyond mine (like two larger inland deltas in the world). Two additions: 1.) A black eye for Botswana is how they have displaced the Basarwa (a more respectful term than Bushmen) from parks/game reserves to prioritize foreign tourist income. The government won't admit to it. 2.) The country name is pronounced with a hard "o", like "boat-swana". The usual pronunciation (which you use) is spelled Batswana, which means the people of the country. Cheers.

Hey man. I'm a big geography buff and you're channel is a gold. Unlike almost everything else I've found you're doing it now! I don't have to watch after the fact with no hope of new videos haha. Beyond that, you're only on letter B! So much to go. Also going through the countries alphabetically is a cool concept and I like how your videos are laid out. Some jokes to keep your attention but also a lot of information. Most geography stuff on KZfaq isn't detailed enough or just boring with too much detail and no entertainment. Good stuff, I hope you see this comment! Way to go brotha. Where are you from if you don't mind me asking? I'm thinking the United states based off your voice but not sure. I'm Canadian, just saying.
