We also had the biggest eagle (Hasst's Eagle) that used to hunt the Moa, wish they had put that in the video too. 🙂

My mum had, what we called a “Manu” doll … we’re of British decent, and I never knew where she got Manu from, but she treasured her and we were never allowed to play w her! She must be 50+ years old now! The name “Manu” was also used on the kids show Playschool for their Māori traditional dressed doll! Interesting channel btw; I even learnt new stuff about my homeland! Thank you!❤🇳🇿

That really, really long word he said at the start is a actually the longest street name in the world!! Because the country is narrow you can often go skiing one day and go to the beach the same day which I have done as I live in the South Island. Also they showed Kate Sheppard there, she was a women's rights activist and got the right for Women to vote here in NZ first country in the world. Just to point out they said Queensland (thats a state in Australia) it's Queenstown the adventure capital of the world!

The Geography Now guys were okay but mispronounced a lot of things. Locals use "The" in front of North Island and South Island, the same way American use "The" in front of District of Columbia. Chatham Islands is pronounced Chat-am not Chath-am The ao in Maori is pronounced "Oww!" (like you've been hit) and the r is slightly trilled (like a very short cat purr). It's almost, but not exactly, a soft short "d" sound. Certainly NOT "More-ee" like they kept saying. You'll hear the trilled "r"/short "d" in a lot of Maori placenames. The perfectly circular Mountain (it's not) is called Taranaki. If you say "Tud-a-nuck-ee" it's pretty close The adventure capital of the world is Queenstown, not Queensland (that's a state of Australia so big you could easily drop all of NZ in it) Harpuku is pronounced HAR-pook-kah, not Har-POO-KOO Hangi is not said like its a Japanese word -Han-GEE. The last letter is almost lost at the end -much softer than what was said. Apart from that it's all pretty okay. Kinda skimped on the whole "First country in the world to give women the vote" thing. Blink and you'd miss it. Also forgot to mention that there is some disputed evidence to suggest that a Kiwi called Richard Pearse beat the Wright Bros to powered flight by about 6 months. Not bad for a small country at the end of the world.

Also Officially the first city in New Zealand to see the sun, Gisborne and Mount Hikurangi are recognised as the first point on the New Zealand mainland to greet the morning sun. Watch the sun rise before anyone else in New Zealand. ;D

Good summation that NZ, Canada, Australia and USA are all in the same crew. But I wish they had included our other close friends. If NZ is tied to ANZUS and AUKUS because of their closeness to Australia, then equally so are the many South Pacific countries tied to New Zealand. They lead and represent the diaspora of the South Pacific.

Maori came from Polynesia? NZ IS part of Polynesia. (The Polynesian triangle is Hawaii, NZ and Easter Island - and everything in between).

Check out the haka each year..one time Australia ignored them by doing practice drills while the haka was performed,,aus lost tho,,another time Ireland?or?aus , while the haka was happenings,they made a triangle and went into the allblacks and walked between them an past like an arrow.but it went on well,,and early days haka with skinny white guys ,allblacks,looks very different and well it was the begining or rugby too..

The small desert in the north island isn't the only one in NZ 'in the central lower south island there is a region that is classed as desert 'or semi desert ' parts of it look very much like the rocky American deserts ' except no cactus' very beautiful.

Maori. Ma-or-ree or Mao similar to the pronunciation of the chinese mao and Ri as in ree. Sorry they butchered it. Also while hunting played a part the Moa became extinct more from climate and habitat changes than hunting. However 16 different species of bird became extinct after the arrival of Europeans, in particular the Huia was hunted to extinction by traders for its feathers to be sold for hats. The arrival of Europeans like so many other places brought a host of diseases which along with ww1 and 2 decimated the Maori population.

Not sure about the whole Canada thing. I know of no active links. I wonder if these guys get a hold of stuff and take the importance out of context. We don't have a great deal to do with UK on a daily basis, def Australia, China Japan, Malaysia, Pacific Islands more important. However, many kiwis will live and work in the UK for a couple of years before they settle down and raise their families: the UK gives many Commonwealth countries preferential treatment with working and residency visas. Especially if you are a child or even grandchild of a British citizen.

There are a few mistakes in that Queensland is in AUSTRALIA they mean QUEENSTOWN. They completely blew the history of New Zealand they got the order of some things wrong and insulted our ANZAC veterans by saying we only fought in Pacific Samoa - so WRONG!! Our men fought in Gallipoli, Turkey with the Australians and then on the Western front in FRANCE. WWII we fought in Greece, North Africa, Crete, and Italy, many of our pilots joined the RAF and fought in the Battle of Britain, one of the commanders of the Battle was Vice Air Marshall Keith Park born in New Zealand. Plus you should ck out the Maori Battalion in WWII

I’m not sure where Geography Now is made but the hosts need to have some lessons in Maori pronunciation. He speaks too fast, the moko (tattoos) that are show. are not Maori at all. Queensland is not in NZ! Please do more thorough research before representing our country.
