Oregon's geographic diversity is its best asset, in my opinion - with amazing coastilne, beautiful mountains (both coast range and Cascades), and desert landscapes that will stop you in your tracks. One of the best things, in terms of the coast, is that in 1967, the state passed a bill that established a permanent public easement for access and recreation along the ocean shore seaward of the existing line of vegetation, regardless of ownership. In other words: Anybody can freely access any beach. Nobody can "own" it.

Barely 1% of Oregon's population lives in the southeast, yet those three counties (Malheur, Harney, and Lake) make up 29% of the state's total area.

Just adding here that in particular, Oregon's wine industry really excels at Pinot Noir. I've heard that it's because the Willamette Valley almost exactly mirrors the same growing conditions in France, which helps a lot with the temperamental grape. Whatever the reason, it means you can go do some great countryside wine tasting without the Napa/Sonoma Valley prices.

You might want to mention the great amount of creative arts present in Oregon, including theatre. Ashland is home to the oldest Shakespeare Festival in the US, with a large repertoire running much of the year. In fact, many eventual Broadway plays and Tony award winners are premiered in Ashland. And that’s just one of many theatre offerings. The Rogue Valley also offers the Britt Fest summer music festival featuring all kinds of music. With a small population, the area is filled with creative professionals and appreciative audiences. Mix that with Southern Oregon University, and you’ve got a wonderfully creative, open, and ever-learning population.

Portland attracts a lot of young people that are true believers in radical left wing politics and who fancy themselves revolutionary. Unlike say people in Hollywood who retweet BLM messages, call themselves "allies", list their preferred pronouns, and display rainbow flags who are just doing to follow cool trends and get followers, those in the Pacific Northwest are true believers. But just like 70 year old baby boomers who got caught up in the weather underground in the early 70s, I think as that generation that moved to places like Portland grows up hopefully they'll realize the world is not all black and white, that they're not as smart as they though they were, that not everyone who disagrees with them are evil, and that the US and the West in general already have existing structures in place to redress grievances.
@GeographyKing3 жыл бұрын
Based on your comments, you clearly believe the political media. If you think liberal politics ruins places, you need to see West Virginia or Kentucky. Or Alabama. Or Arkansas. Or Mississippi. Or Louisiana. Political leaning has zero effect whatsoever on determining whether or not a place is successful.

Thank you so much for doing a great job profiling my home state of Oregon! You did a masterful job pronouncing all the place names correctly and you provided an excellent analysis of the state’s geography in terms of its landforms and economy. Only two minor inaccuracies: - When describing Eugene, you implied that Nike is headquartered there but, in fact, Nike is headquartered in Beaverton, a western suburb of Portland. - While it’s true that Oregon’s at less risk of frequent earthquakes, it is at greater risk for extremely damaging earthquakes and tsunamis. While the Cascadia Subduction Zone may rupture less often, a major earthquake along it will cause far more damage than a typical California quake.
@GeographyKing3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I kinda flubbed the line about Nike. I certainly didn't mean to say that there are no earthquakes there but just that there are fewer than CA or WA. And yeah a Cascadia quake could be really bad.
@ja8ames Жыл бұрын
Nike did begin in Eugene, but yeah, Beaverton for a long time now.
@mariebrown49663 жыл бұрын
Great video Kyle. I enjoyed watching. I know there aren't often large earthquakes there, but I encourage you to learn about the Cascadia Subduction zone before your video on Washington state. There has been research pointing to mega earthquakes that occur off the coast from northern California to Vancouver island, approximately every 300 years. The last one occurred in 1700 or so, I can't remember, but it's documented in Japan as an "orphan" tsunami, because there was no earthquake there. The wave traveled from western north America. When the Cascadia subduction zone "rips" it's supposed to be big, affecting the whole western third of the state. Now Oregon has yearly earthquake drills, but people didn't even know about this until the mid-1990s or so! Thanks for an otherwise great video about my home state!

Wonder what TheWorldAccordingToBriggs would think of this? 🤔 Couple things of note: Hells Canyon is actually the deepest canyon in North America, averaging 2,000 feet deeper than even the Grand Canyon in Arizona. While Mount Hood is the lowest high point in the western states by elevation, that's largely due to fact that it does not sit on a plateau like most mountain ranges. In terms of rise above terrain/local relief, Mount Hood is actually the 4th tallest mountain in the lower 48 states, taller than any of the mountains in the Rockies or Sierra Nevada.

The earthquake risk in western Oregon is actually quite high. Every 600 years or so, we get a 9+ earthquake, and we're due for one. The Pacific plate pushes on the Juan de Fuca plate, which is subsiding under the North American plate. There are major faults running through west Portland. A lot of money has gone into remediating bridges and buildings. We don't get many large earthquakes, but the risk of a very large one is increasing. One reason for not living along the coast is the tsunami risk.

Yesss!! Thank you!💛Sooo many brilliant reasons to love the state but I really enjoy the experiences here! The Columbia Gorge is uniquely beautiful. I’m crying already and hope you mention something about Hoodie! The description of the towns is grand to get to know them, for people who are curious. It sums up the important part of each town.

I love the video, but you forgot to mention the Tilamook Creamery. They have the best ice cream in the state. And the cheese there is amazing.

I love Tillamook cheese and have been goin to the factory since the 70s as a little kid. But when it comes to ice cream, I love Umpqua! And their sherbet is da bomb too. (It's still an Oregon business)

I like Umpqua ice cream too.

Tillamook is probably my number 1 pick coastal town to live in. Very right wing blue collar, lots of hunting and fishing and tons of open forest land. Its the only city along the coast where everyone waves at each other, unless you got a rip city sticker and or California plates. I dont recommend driving a car with cali plates through rural tilly😂😂😂

You glossed over the Cascade Subduction Zone threat. We are due for a big earthquake all along that rift. We don’t get many EQ, but the ones we do get can be bad.

Thanks for covering my home state! As far as I can tell, all the information here is accurate! I really appreciate the fact that you didn't get political like sooooo many people do when they talk about Oregon.

I'm surprised you didn't d mention the eruption of Mount St Helena in the 80s, a huge volcanic eruption that covered downtown Portland in players of volcanic ash. I know the volcano is in Washington State, but it did impact Oregon a huge amount.

Drove along the coast several years ago, was blown away by the amazing scenery. Would love to live there one day, although the coastal real estate is astronomically expensive. :(

I would not say that Oregon is a strange state.. I have lived in this state since I was born 45 years ago.. I would say Oregon is very well diversified and cultured , and extremely unique state, however most certainly not strange... now A LOT of the people living here are just the living poster child of strange my dear friend , but most definitely not this beautiful state.. I have lived in all four corners of this state and central Oregon and could never tire of the landscapes now matter how many times I have seen it.. in the dessert, which is where was raised, after I was born in Medford Oregon ,and move to eastern Oregon just north of the steen's mountains..and it is a place I am glad pop moved us to when trailways was bought out and he lost his job driving 1-5 Medford to Portland run......I did however enjoy the video and you did a good job hitting all the good spot cept the steen's and keiger gorge... I am bummed about that .. one mile deep ditch carved in a mountain range in a very peculiar place for its existence in geology and make up. 👍☮️🚾........... P.S. alvord dessert...... K done now bye..........

I've visited Oregon 4 times now, and made incredible memories reach time. I loved Portland, Salem, Eugene, The Dalles, Camp Sherman, Sisters, Mount Hood, and several other small towns, peaks, waterfalls, and farms not mentioned.

I lived in Portland for almost ten years, I live in Murfreesboro, Tn now. Portland is my favorite city to visit and live in all the areas of the US that I have been to. I would move back in a heartbeat if I could. But as much as I love Portland I love the Oregon coast the most in Oregon. My favorite small town in Oregon is Yachats.
