Actually, 400 kilometers is a radius, so its actually 800 kilometers with only one tree. If we take the whole area into consideration, there is 502.400 square kilometers with only one tree.

They really don't have a lot going for them. GDP per capita of about $400 (for context, I've seen estimates suggesting that colonial America had a GDP per capita adjusted for inflation of a little over $1,000), a birth rate so high that it could accurately be described as "preindustrial", and a mostly dry environment that will almost certainly not be able to support the agricultural needs of the rapidly growing population. They do have a uranium mine... which counts for something I guess. But they have completely failed at taking advantage of the income it provides. Why do I say this? Because, when adjusted for inflation, their GDP per capita has actually _fallen_ since independence, going from about $1,100 to $400 today. This has happened largely because the uranium mine income has simply become spread over more people as the population has grown, also because the political instability has hampered economic development. To put their situation into further perspective, the literacy rate is only about 19.1%, and only about 16.2% of them have access to electricity. Basically, Niger is really struggling.
