Geology - The Bluffs at Dungeness Spit near Sequim, WA | Olympic Peninsula

Join me for a look at the Bluffs at Dungeness Spit.
I learned about this geology field trip in a book called Geology Underfoot in Western Washington by Dave Tucker. It’s a great resource for learning geology and discovering where to see some interesting examples in person. The book has 22 suggested field trips with photos, diagrams and explanations. This one is on page 259, #17 “A Spit in the Sea, Dungeness Spit.”
I visited the bluffs in February, 2023.

Nicely done, Jennifer. Good closeup captures of the Bluff area. Great Southwest views at the end of your video, too. A HUGE CAUTION to anyone visiting the bluffs anywhere along the Strait -- Do Not Climb on the Bluffs. Stay a good distance away from the bluffs. You never know when they may come tumbling down. Be safe out there.

We want to walk out to the lighthouse too, hoping to go this summer on a day when there's a low tide. The bluffs are really interesting ... Hi! Yes, it’s a really interesting area! I’m always impressed at what the geologists are able to tell us about the history of our area and the ice ages. The landscape has changed quite quickly if we think it geological time! 😄🌊🌊 Thanks - have a great week!

Fantastic video! I don't know why I had never thought about how the bluffs formed - really interesting! I love that old fossil layer at the bottom. I'm going to take a closer look and enjoy my beach walks more when I'm going along the bluffs now. 🙂

Hi and thanks! Isn’t it interesting! I have another book, and you can look online, to see where the Puget Lobe glacier advanced and retreated into Puget Sound. Pretty cool stuff! I’ve been learning more about the bluffs and local geology during the last few years. If you’re interested, the book is really helpful with in-depth explanations and field trip suggestions. Thanks! Happy Sunday! 😄☀️☀️

@@JenniferLupine Yes! I'd looked up some things online, but I think I'll have to pick up a copy of Geology Underfoot. I have Roadside Geology, so I think I need to dust that one off too. 🙂

Thanks for the educational and visual explanation of the glacial influenced bluffs. I have always been very curious about these layered, mysterious land formations. I used to poke around some that were of the same geological makeup on Vancouver Island; directly across the Strait of Juan de Fuca from Dungeness Spit. That dragon like/dinosaur(esque) piece of driftwood @5:58 was very fitting for this video. 👍👍

Awesome! I should check out the bluffs around Vancouver Island! I always enjoy getting onto the beaches around Puget Sound and seeing what the bluffs look like up close… Vancouver Island isn’t far away at all, it’s just that border that makes it difficult for to visit. Thanks! 😄🌊🌊

Jennifer, geological processes are absolutely amazing. To think of those 4000ft glaciers coming and going across that area! I think I read somewhere that Ireland is still rising a few millimetres each year after the compression of the last Ice Age. A stunning coastline to highlight those long ago and current processes👍

Wow! That’s amazing that Ireland is still rising, even now, from being compressed! I should look up some history of the ice ages in Ireland! It’s great to learn new things - thanks Gerry!! 👌😄☀️☀️

Fascinating area to explore. The views along the beach towards Port Angeles were wonderful. We have many beaches that show a huge variety of geological variations on our island including some similarly constructed during glacial times that have since been subject to quite rapid erosion. Just this past week the high spring tides have claimed more properties on the Norfolk coast. Hope you are having a great weekend.

Hi Ivor- that’s too bad to hear about the loss of the houses… I guess people should look at these properties over the long term to see the likely dangers. I should look up some more info on the ice ages… it’s been fun to learn more geology the past few years. Thanks- you too, have a great day! 😄🌊🌊

@@JenniferLupine Our East Coast has been subject to fairly rapid erosion for thousands of years but the rate of erosion has increased enormously more recently. People who thought they were safe in their homes for another fifty years suddenly found they were teetering on the edge after maybe just ten. Villages that have existed for hundreds of years and were at some distance from the sea are now threatened. It is the speed of change that is more difficult to manage.

So peaceful 😊 I love geology but I’m no expert on such matters. I’ve never heard the term bluffs before. Isn’t it fascinating how time it’s self is captured in the rock and soil. imagine the tales it could tell. 🙂

Hi and thanks Rachel! Me too, I’m very interested in geology, especially since I started hiking more in the mountains. It sure is fascinating that our landscape changes so much over time - and that we can see into the past! Thanks! Have a great upcoming week!! 😁☀️☀️
