NOAA forecasters say that minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible on July 13-14 when a stream of solar wind is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. The gaseous material is flowing from a northern hole in the sun's atmosphere.
EVENT:
A Coronal Hole (CH) is a dark, less dense area in the solar corona. Solar wind escapes from these features at higher speeds, known as High Speed Streams (HSS). When they arrive at Earth, escalated geomagnetic activity may result. Watches at this level are common.
TIMING:
Initial Coronal Hole High Speed Streams (CH HSS) influences are likely to begin on July 13.
EFFECTS:
Migratory animals are affected at this and higher levels; aurora is commonly visible at high latitudes (northern Europe, and northern Michigan and Maine in U.S.A.).
