A Geordie song - Lass On The Bankies. This is a true story from many years ago when I was an apprentice in a large engineering works in Gateshead, North East England.
As a young Geordie teenager, I was looking forward to a bright and exciting future, totally insensitive to my previous generation who had just fought a world war to enable me to have this freedom. It's a simple story and typical of those who were affected by world events that completely overwhelmed them and through no fault of their own were left with personal battles to pick up the pieces of their lives. How must they have felt when they'd sacrificed so much and no one cared?

Isn't it funny how the bankies mean different places, for different people. For me, when my Mam was at work, i used to walk from school to Hepburn gardens in the felling, this was in the 80's. I then waled home up whats now fox street, and we used to call them the bankies in the felling.

fabulous, resonate with this to the max, almost the same experiance - know the same places, talked with the guys who were in the war during my apprenticeship and moved from Sunderland Rd to the Fell when 14 and lost all my old mates. The tune could do with some tweeking but it has great potential with a bit of work. I'm related to Alex Glasgow and Annie Fentiman the soft drink people.

@@musicaljuice1970 yes indeed, it's a way of life that our young folk can't understand but it shaped us and will never leave us, thats why your piece is so important, it kinda fixes those experiances for a future generation to ponder. Left it all to emigrate to NZ in 1970. Was back in town Julyand Aug. See family and friends possibly for the last time.Good to hear from you.
