+ray bon I'll stand by my opinion; I think George Brett was the greatest 3rd basemen of all-time. Many think Mike Schmidt was, Mike had better power and was a slightly better fielder. George was a significantly better hitter for average and better base runner. Brooks Robinson greatest fielding 3rd baseman off- alltime.

+Kenneth Mattison Willie Mays was my boyhood favorite, but I fell in love with Brett as a teenager and he became my favorite player. I became a lifelong Royals fan after that. I only got to see George play one time in person at a Twins- Royals game at the Metrodome in 87. Of course George hit a 3 run home run to lift the Royals to victory. He was just fun to watch.

I think that is a misconception that Brett didn't hit many regular season Hr's. He is the Royals all time leader with 317, nobody else has even 200, that's quite a few playing in cavernous Royals stadium. With his beautiful left handed swing God on;y knows how many he would of hit say if hitting to the short RF fence at Yankee stadium. I agree with you; he is the best 3rd basemen off all-time with Schmidt a close second.

He did get all of it. I love his home run trot around the bases, you could tell he was savoring every step after all the heartaches the Yankees had given the Royals in the 70's.

He did round them a bit slower than he usually would have. He once said he could've run around the bases 4 or 5 times, he was so overjoyed.

One thing missing here is his game 3 performance in the 1985 ALCS which Brett says is his greatest game he ever played. As I am sure you know, he was 4 for 4 with 2 home runs in a must win game for KC.

I sure do recall, down 2 games to none; Brett throwing the runner out at home. A one man gang, climb on my back boys. I don't recall why I don't have that in the video or if I have it in my greatest plays in Royals history video or not.

Chipper Jones was a very good 3rd basemen. Still a Royals fan also rooted for the Red Sox for decades, they always had a great bunch of characters, but they are basically the Yankees now.

It was total BS; he didn't care about the pine tar at all. MLB Network has a doc about Martin and he had this all planned out if there was a great time that he could do it.

Loved loved loved watching those teams...that was real baseball...not this crap now where someone hits a homerun, then everybody strikes out or maybe gets a walk until maybe an hour later and somebody else hits another homer. Lot more variety and action in the game, they were a treat to watch

@@onrywaymore104 agree, strike outs and home runs... how boring, and on top of that the game takes forever, i've seen teams like tampa bay use 8 or 9 pitchers in a 9 inning game. and it really burned them when kevin cash took out blake snell in the 6th inning of game 6 this year, snell in 5.1 innings had 9 strike outs, gave up 2 hits and hadn't walked a batter... yep, better take him out he's thrown 73 pitches... and los angeles dodger manager dave roberts will take you out even if you've got a no hitter going, he's done it twice! two things that drive me nuts about todays game, 1) strike outs with runners in scoring position, guy hits a double to lead off, next two guys strike out trying to hit a home run, and the 3rd guy grounds out. 2) relief pitchers comes in and walks the first batter in a tight game, that guy scores and the game is tied or they take the lead. they can throw 97 but don't have a clue about what they're doing out there.

People will still be debating Brett vs Schmidt long after I am gone. NL vs AL. leftie vs righty, power vs all-around. Schmidt had the power for sure, and better defensively. Not better than Brooks Robinson defensively though, Brooks was the greatest defensively. Brett better pure hitter, average, better baserunner and clutch hitter.

Cmon, you can't compare Ron Cey to George Brett and Mike Schmidt. The penguin was a fine 3rd basemen, but he was not an all-time great.

George is ambidextrous! We have an annual All Star Game, here, in El Segundo, CA. It's called the "Daily Breeze All Star Game." Area's best high school seniors split into two teams. George pitched. He threw right-handed & left-handed! 1971. Two people have shared this story with me. One, Carl Peternell (RIP) played in the game. As for Ken Brett, George Genovese (RIP), scout with the Giants shared, "Ken Brett, is the greatest baseball player I've ever scouted! He was big, strong, fast! He could field, hit, throw! We wanted to park him in the outfield, but the Red Sox drafted him before us." Kemer, graduated from El Segundo High School in 1966. He was the 4th player picked in the draft. Side note: Scott McGregor was George's teammate at El Segundo in 1970 & 1971. McGregor was voted Player Of The Year in '71 & '72. Not a bad high school club in early '70s. McGregor was the 14th player picked in '72.

It's supposed to say "He is one of four players in MLB history to accumulate 3,000 hits, 300 home runs, and a career .300 batting average (the others being Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Stan Musial). Miguel Cabrera is now a member of that exclusive club also.
