George was the 1980s icon and a national treasure long before that. But let's not forget Dennis, the essential half of the partnerships in The Sweeney and Minder. Terry was like Delboy's Rodney: under-appreciated for their range, and ultimately unrewarded for their sterling work since childhood.

Am 53 years old and in the 70s and 80s I watched the great George Cole on TV, I loved his part as Arthur Daley and off course Denise Waterman as Terry McCann, fantastic tv series I watched faithfully every week and loved both actors in it! We are all getting old and these actors and tv programmes bring such good memories back to us. Poor George Cole has passed on now and I will never forget him and we are lucky Denise Waterman is still with us and still acting! I wish UK Gold would bring the 1st episodes of Minder Back like they have done with only fools and houses! Thanks George Cole and Denise Waterman for the great times I had watching Minder when I was a wee boy!!!

Minder episodes are on BritBox, which is how I get my fix. It’s great to see them again 35-40 years later as I get so much more from each episode. I’m sure the late, great Denis Waterman wouldn’t like being referred to a Denise 😆

I so miss Thames Television and it's Euston Films branch. Then Saturday and Sunday Thames switch to London Weekend Television (LWT). TV was so good back then with a lot of drama and comedy. Then I remember when Thames lost its franchise and Carlton took over in the 90s and everything went downhill from there along with all the other regional ITV stations. Now look what we're left with.

@stephenalanmoore7278
@stephenalanmoore7278 Жыл бұрын
@@janeweedon6335 Actually, it was his oldest son Crispin (who incidentally works as a scriptwriter) that overheard some bloke saying the phrase in a pub and he told his Dad all about it. George then paid his son £20.00 and told him not to mention it to anyone else, as he was saving it for 'Minder'. He held on to it for about two years, then finally used the saying in an episode called 'Rocky 8 & 1/2'. George Cole himself related this story in his hugely entertaining autobiography 'The World Was My Lobster'.

George mentions his "terrible cockney accent" such a shame. I used to refer in the same manner to myself years ago, and worked hard at received pronunciation, but as I've got older and travelled widely I've come to think that my original accent with all its rich and colourful slang, idioms etc is every bit as valid as any other dialect in Britain. It was the bloody BBCs arrogant social engineering activities that made us ashamed of our regional accents growing up.

@@stephenalanmoore7278 Do you know who was first choice to play Daley?
@stephenalanmoore7278
@stephenalanmoore7278 Жыл бұрын
@@thehomefront1905 Yes. According to Dennis Waterman in his autobiography 'Reminder', he (for some bizarre reason) wanted the ex-public schoolboy actor Denholm Elliott for the role, as he believed that George Cole was too posh for the part. Work that one out if you can. Dennis was undoubtedly a great TV actor, but he would've made an absolutely terrible casting director.
@stephenalanmoore7278
@stephenalanmoore7278 Жыл бұрын
In my view, George Cole was clearly born to play that role, so he was the obvious choice for it. George created a truly iconic TV character in Arthur Daley. NOBODY could've ever played that part better than him.

I don't think George Cole really wanted to escape it, as he was very proud of the show and his role as Arthur Daley. In fact, in his autobiography 'The World Was My Lobster', George devoted a whole chapter to the series. He still managed to avoid typecasting and went on to play many other varied roles long after it had finished.

Del-Boy was the clumsy wax copy of Arthur. Surly that was obvious? The BBC panicked when they saw the viewing figures Arthur was gradually pulling in. George Cole had the provenance, and had been playing spivs since St Trinian's, indeed he was the definitive fast-talking spiv before David Jason was even dreaming of his first Arkwright's delivery bike. Jason just didn't have it in him, despite a laboured pitch. His depiction always seemed forced and cartoonishly self-conscious to me, what the middle-class producers at the BBC imagined was a spiv. Jason was a suburban garden shrubbery, Cole was a mighty wild forest. Cole had by far the better banter..
