This shit really swings like mad, man......Great band, and always nice to hear the great Harold Mabern on piano.... Of course the original Stevie Wonder song was in 4-4 funk tempo and did not swing anything like this here. -- There is a great story about tenor player Sal (-vatore) Nistico, who was most associated with the Woody Herman band. The arranger Sammy Nestico (sic), who was doing scores for the Count Basie Band, noticed that Sal Nistico had a name similar to his and he did some research into his father and found out that his father's real name was in fact Nistico, but he had changed it to Nestico and that he and Salvatore were related and were cousins..... so he called him up to relate the good news.....

Yea it was. That thing he did in solo at around 5'55 that caused Billy Higgins to smile over at him in pleasure & joy - I've never heard any other base player play that 'thing' before & I've heard a quite a lot of base solos...

@letsrunbike To relate to this great music you have to put everything aside and meditate on it. Jazz is music that hits the soul, nothing like it in the world. The more you listen, the more it penetrates the spirit. Go for Brother...

@Jazzanswer I think I see what you mean... The A section sounds like a I VI II subV (IV with 9th in bass) to me which I would have thought was adequate for improvising over.... but then that's only my opinion. I just don't hear anyone 'trying' in the sense that they're having any problem with it ... But perhaps you don't mean that ... I find the shuffle works well for me - especially in hard-bop - I'm thinking here of much of Horace Silvers early material for Bluenote for example...

@Vicfirth5bb Not me - i'm from the UK (Liverpool) but live in the States now ...but I do have an MA in music studies from Liverpool University. I replied to Jazzanswer because I don't hear what's going on here as just a 'shuffle' and I was interested - I would only use the term 'shuffle' for styles like the 'Chicago Blues and thus the playing of drummers like Freddy Below. 'Shuffle Beat' is a bit vague fof me here It's not a big deal for me - I was just curious. Vicfirth ... Cool name :-) Bob
