I love this piece so much! It begins so simply and sweetly, like a shy young man inviting a pretty girl to dance. Then little by little it becomes more passionate until the whole village is dancing in a Dionysiac frenzy! It was a joy to watch the conductor dancing in his own Dionysiac frenzy, and the musicians keeping up magnificently.

Enescu didn't compose in a void. His work is to a large extent inspired by Romanian folk music. Romanian culture - music included - gathered lots of influences from many cultures it came into (most often brutal) contact with, but had about a thousand years to properly integrate and harmonize them - that's what Enescu built on.
