Next Up for Top Rank Boxing, Joe Smith Jr. WBO light heavyweight world champion Joe Smith Jr will make his first title defense against an unlikely contender. British puncher Callum Johnson tested positive for COVID-19, so Smith will now face Steve Geffrard on Saturday, Jan. 15 at Turning Stone Resort Casino and LIVE on ESPN and ESPN Deportes (simulcast on ESPN+) at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
In the 10-round co-feature, featherweight contender Abraham Nova (20-0, 14 KOs), who was originally slated to fight Jose Enrique Vivas, will fight Dominican veteran William “El Gago” Encarnacion (19-1, 15 KOs) after Vivas dropped out with an injury.
"I give Steve credit for taking this fight on short notice,” Smith said. “He is a tough guy, and I expect him to bring everything he has for this opportunity. I'm ready to fight regardless of who is in the ring with me. My goal is the same, which is to defend my world title and keep it on Long Island where it belongs."
Geffrard said, “This is the opportunity of a lifetime. It’s crazy how boxing works. One moment I’m thinking about boxing on a local show, then the phone rings for a chance to fight for the WBO world title on ESPN. Unreal!”
Smith (27-3, 21 KOs), the fighting pride of Long Island, won the title last April with a majority decision over Maxim Vlasov. His proposed October return was postponed due to a COVID-19 diagnosis, and with Johnson out, he turns his attention to Geffrard (18-2, 12 KOs), a 31-year-old native of Miami, Florida.
Geffrard is a nine-year pro who has won 18 straight fights since starting his career 0-2. He upped his record to 18-2 last March, winning an eight-round unanimous decision over longtime contender Denis Grachev. Geffrard had a fight scheduled for Jan. 8 in Delray Beach, Florida, but the “South Florida Cinderella Man” jumped at the chance to fight Smith on eight days’ notice.

Most definitely. For his achievements in boxing alone, TWO whole boxing careers a full ten years apart and coming back from scratch, to become world champion again aged 45, you cannot find a more extraordinary heavyweight. My eternal sadness when I think of George is how they do blatantly robbed him of his title by giving Shannon Briggs the decision in their fight. George battered Briggs for the full fight and even the commentators couldn’t believe it when Briggs got the decision. It wasn’t even close. George won it clearly. He never fought again. No wonder.

@@w900L Yeah, such terrible stamina that Tommy Morrison was running away from a 40+ Foreman the last two rounds of their fight. And the only reason the younger Foreman "lacked stamina" was because he would throw non-stop power shots from bell to bell. I challenge you to find any other heavyweight fighter that could expend the amount of energy George could at a comparable age.

Other than George being known for ALL of his punches, not just his overhand right, that quote is exactly correct. People don't talk about his incredibly large his arms were. They were, as the announcer said, massive. And his power, well, again, as we all know, was damned incredible. He also might have the biggest hands, along with Sonny Liston, of all-time. There is a reason that his punches don't look hard all the time but absolutely decimated on his opponents. His huge arms created so much torque when he did decide to swing hard that when those enormous hands came in, they landed like bowling balls. Both his right and his left hit equally hard. Cheers.

The minimal hip rotation / body English made it look like he was tamely pawing at people, but they'd crumple to the floor. I think George might well be the hardest puncher in boxing history.

Went to hs with Jimmy (Seahawks). I was being picked on by some jocks at snack one day, and Jimmy shamed them by saying there was no glory in picking on me, that they were actually embarrassing themselves. I'll never forget his kindness. Everyone in Redondo Beach was rooting for Jimmy from our TV's, but rushing in on George and trying to outslug him was not a good idea. George was very graceful in his win.

You saw towards the end where Ellis was out on his feet and was unsuccessfully trying to hold onto Big George. He could have devastated him by taking a step back and launching an uppercut with the entire force of his body. Showed real class by not giving his opponent a brain damage inducing shot right there.

Young Foreman threw wide looping hooks to generate power. Older Foreman seemed to shorten up his shots and kept them straight and sharp to generate power. He would just woof down a bowl full of cheeseburgers and knock these younger fighter smooth the F-out.

I gotta say, people talk about class but Foreman gulping down burgers before his fights was a pretty unique form of disrespect. Imagine training for a fight with him, drying yourself out to weigh less for that extra burst of speed... And then on the day you step into the ring and George's there on the other side with the look of a happy and well-fed man, totally unconcerned about that additional speed of yours because he knows it won't matter.

Don't know why Foreman is slept on so much. Sure, there are plenty of boxers that can last into their 40s, but most of them lose all the talent they had to be effective. George was always deadly at any age and fought in multiple eras of boxing. Can't tell by his physique, but energy is never an issue except for early on in his career. Notice how he has mastered conserving energy. He doesn't waste energy on movement. Uses feints to setup punches and explodes with brick fists. The cross guard allows him protection from ranged jabbers so fighters have to get into the shit with George at some point which is always a bad idea, but the only way you are going to beat him. You could tell George wasn't entertained by the competition here, but he needed to make a decent fight for the fans. He was holding back as if he were a sparring partner for a contender training for a title fight. He throttled himself a bit at the end trying to get Jimmy out of there as if he were trying to provide an opportunity for the ref to stop the fight. He could have just pounded the crap out of him.

Did a little digging around and in spite of everyone portraying him as this loser who never stood a chance Jimmy Ellis did okay he was never going to set the world afire but he Beat tony Tubbs (a world champion) and retired 20 -5-1 which is decent innings to hang your hat on. also had a quick loss to briggs. I think a lot of us would be pretty happy to have fought Briggs foreman and Tubbs regardless of the outcomes. I also like George talking about him too I know its a bit of a promo but George is such a scholar of boxing and its so much fun listening to him talk about the sport and fighters regardless of who they are.

Ellis looked like a pinata here, and truly amazing he stayed on his feet and wasn't knocked out into another galaxy much earlier in this fight.

Love george I really do. Considering he was such a powerful tough giant with a granite chin and a champions heart he was always courteous and respectful to his opponent. He will always be my no1 heavyweight of all time.

it is just as well for every single one of foreman opponents, that George does not have a nasty bone in his body, because if he did, he would have left a trail of destruction behind him that they would still be cleaning up today. Such a gentleman, such a great boxer and like going up against a big Oak Tree!. Every one of those shots may look sometimes slow compared to some, but the kinetic power behind Foreman's shots are an absolute killer.

George became the Genteel, Soft hearted , Humane Boxer we still feared but loved as well. He pulled hi punches after Jimmy got rocked. I remember the Killer George was in the 1970s, he is not the same person.

Ellis had a hell of a chin in this fight. Had Steele not stepped in, Foreman might have really hurt him, long-term wise, because Ellis simply refused to go down.

Big George looked disappointed as soon as he staggered Ellis in round 2 at 7:25 . Like "That all you got? Sheesh... okay, I'll carry you for another round or so, get some work in. Whatever."
