From the film "Let George Do It" (1940) starring George Formby, Phyllis Calvert, Garry Marsh and Hal Gordon. Composers: George Formby and Eddie Latta.
Lyrics -
Now in our family we've got a heirloom
They handed it to me a year ago
It's been in our possession since Grandad was a lad
I'll tell you what it is and then you'll know
It's my grandads Flannelette nightshirt
In it I was Christened one day
Down at the church they were in a whirl
No one seemed to know if I were boy or girl
They'd had one or two and ee! They were in mess
But it's all right said the preacher rather curt
I've been and had a quiz and I've found out what it is
By his grandad's Flannelette shirt, Lordy Lordy
His grandad's flannelette shirt
In 1810 grandfather joined the army
To fight Napoleon across the sea
You've heard about the battle they had at Waterloo
But what was it that brought us victory?
Why my grandad's flannelette nightshirt
It saved old England that day
Bonaparte said, "We are undone!"
And even Josephine put her gasmask on!
He shot our colours down and captured our flag
But we were not downhearted, it's a cert
For flying in the gale everyone could see the tail
Of my grandad's Flannelette shirt, Lordy Lordy
My grandad's Flannelette shirt
The other day I got an invitation
To go and join a nudist colony
And as the life was healthy and in the open air
I trotted off as happy as can be
With my grandad's flannelette nightshirt
I walked up to the door
Someone said, "Now, don't make a fuss!"
"Just take off your clothes and you'll be like us"
Well I was bashful so I stayed by myself
For with the girls I didn't want to flirt
But when I was asleep they all came and had a peep
At my grandad's flannelette shirt, Lordy Lordy
My grandad's flannelette shirt

l liked the fact that twice,George suddenly looked into camera to show his awareness of the cinema audience..a very rare thing for any actor to do,,in fact almost a taboo. The only other l can think of who did that was Ollie Hardy. A nice touch l thought.

I was lucky. I saw my first George Formby films at the Saturday Morning Matinee back in the early sixties. I did not understand the smutty humour, of course, but I think it is a whole lot of fun now. It's like cheeky sea side post cards of course - not very subtle - but somehow quite harmless and inoffensive.

You know I remember a lot of his songs (not because I was alive when he was popular), but because my parents just had a vast and eclectic record collection. Plus I love old movies. What was my point again? lol. Oh yeah. George. I only just googled him for the first time now. I had no idea he was such a late starter to the business of show. He seems so youthful in these videos. I know he doesn't look young, but he has the energy of a much younger man.

In this video, you could almost believe it was all done live because the lip syncing is so precise, however if you look carefully just after 2:26 George mouths the word "shirt" a little too late, then the next line (in the same shot) he is back in close sync. So he is miming. It is a good question though, it's perfectly possible to sing "live" over a backing track in a film.

That bit of winking at the viewer reminds me of a comic pictorial motif alluded to in Shakespeare: a picture of two jackasses (or two village fools/clowns) with the caption: "We Three" -- as if the person looking at the picture were completing a circle of friends. I wonder if that's a particularly English/British type of humor that's survived down the ages...

***** Not quite sure how a song can be "useless", but I guess you just couldn't come up with anything else to say. Don't worry, it happens to some dense people sometimes: They sometimes blurt out irrelevant stuff. And I also don't see how it's boring, unless you don't understand the banjolele techniques that he's doing here. I know that only a few people studied him in Oxford, but I don't think that's what his music was for, it was for a laugh.

Nothing wrong with that . Where music is concerned keep an open mind . As it goes my favourite decade for music is the 1960's yet I was not born until 1969 . When it seemed to come into fashion back in the late 1980's for me it was thank god for that . However that being said with an open mind there can be some good stuff accross the board , both era and type .

@cantleysugar You're right,of course. I had forgotten dear old Eric Morcambe also used the camera to great effect. l remember reading an article by a film historian who commented that Ollie Hardy was one of the very first to involve the audience by his knowing look into camera in recognition that they were out there looking in. A brilliant way to connect, but one frowned upon by the early film makers.

I loved Formby and his playing and songs. However,he wrote not a note or a word of any of them.He 'bought them" for 5 or 10 pounds, via his wife Beryl who was the business woman, and all public singing rights were reserved to him only.So it was only 3 years after he'd died that Alan Randall was asked by the publishers to perform them in public to keep the royalties flowing. To see the BEST player today see Andy Eastwood on youtube, especially William Tell Overture His right hand is the best ever!
