I had a week to practice this for a music camp when I was 10 and it was probably the most traumatizing piece I've ever played

You should read the New York Times article from March 2, 2016 to see how orchestras have been playing the taxi horn parts incorrectly for most performances and recordings since at least 1945. This was due to the ambiguity of Gershwin's notation regarding the pitch of the taxi horns. Orchestras have been using taxi horns pitched at A - B - C - D, but the recording of "An American In Paris" from 1929, made under Gershwin's supervision and probably with the taxi horns he brought home from his trip to Paris are actually pitch at A Flat, B Flat, a D that is higher than the one used today, and a taxi horn in A which is much lower than what is used today. Using Gershwin's original pitches for the taxi horns give them a much more dissonant sound making them really stand out. The problem seems to stem from the fact that Gershwin give the A-B-C-D notation just to specify which horn was to be played at a particular time, and not the PITCH that they should be played out. Life would have been easier if he had just labeled them 1,2,3,4, instead.

I really like the bell sound at 2:14 , reminded me of a speeding bike bell or a tram. Cool percussion section in this orchestra!

It literally says "taxi-horn" in the score, so you weren't far off.

Thank you for putting this up. The New Zealanders don't "get" this work. Neither does the conductor. Stodgy, but still fun!
