This is NOT a symphony ─ Gershwin composed no symphonies. This is a brilliant tone poem. Gershwin's early death just when he was developing his skills with larger music forms deprived the world of what could have been a collection of great compositions. We are grateful for the music he did leave; all the songs, this work, the piano concerto, the two rhapsodies, Porgy and Bess etc., but it's very sad to contemplate what might have been if he had lived to old age.

Although this is a classical music channel, my aim when writing the description of the video wasn't being technically accurate, so I decided to name this piece as a symphonie, as it is popularly known, despite being considered as other type of composition by the experts in this area.

@@LegomansClassics Thank you for your kind reply but I must add that nowhere else have I heard the work described as a symphony - perhaps a symphonic work, but that alludes to its orchestral structure not its musical form.

These nuances and this implication in the piece really makes it for me a pure work of art which is not enough known enough for my taste and which deserves much more attention. We can see all of Paris in this piece with all these horn noises and the bustle which makes the charm of the city as well as that of the music. It's just amazing

Easier than anybody could imagine, arts - any kind - use not only our brain, but our entire organism in that special and "magic" way that drive a human being to genius. First, you start very young, with hundreds of hours of mnemonics exercises that link your hands with your brain (and your feet, your heart, your soul, and so on). Then, you sleep with and you dream with, art become your indispensable nourishment. Music is also mathematical thing, as J.S. BACH remind us, by his still marvelous masterpieces. Last but not least, as a conductor, if you want be follow by an orchestra, you must be know what they are playing, BEFORE they do it. After, it's too late :)

That's Gustavo Dudamel, from Venezuela. Guy is brilliant. He was invited to direct for the soundtrack of Star Wars VII, I think. Invited by John Williams himself!

I have a CD of Gershwin's works, including (obviously) American In Paris and Rhapsody In Blue. It gets played a lot. It is sad that he left this world at such a young age. We can only imagine the many more brilliant pieces of music that this genius would have written had he lived. Thank you Mr. Gershwin. You left this world a great gift. p.s. If you haven't done so, may I recommend that people listen to some of the other great musical pieces composed by Gershwin.

Bernstein definitely got his inspiration from Gershwin’s An American in Paris for the prologue, what a king. It echoes the youthful and playful side of the beginning of WSS perfectly! I also find it ironic that the musical motif of the Jets is jazz when we all know that jazz comes from African slaves, maybe it’s to remind them and the audience that those who built the country were Black slaves? I don’t know, I think it makes me love the score so much more. It’s so powerful to think it that way. This musical is still America in a nutshell.

Never seen a conductor have so much fun during a performance. He's there living the music, glad for him :). Also, the instruments are extremely well tuned. Loved this recording, I'll save it on my playlist.

It was round 1930 , Gershwin meet Rachmaninoff and Paganini in Paris. He was amazed with the taxis's horn sound and included these horns...

No todos son Schubert o Amadeus, dispuestos a vivir en la miseria por la música. Por otro lado, el Sistema de Orquestas de Venezuela, sigue adelante.
