Hi Everyone! Thanks for tuning in for my latest video detailing my thoughts and opinions on the vinyl edition of the George Harrison All Things Must Pass 50th Anniversary Remix. Being a favorite of mine for most of my life, I've been looking forward to a project like this for years. I spent the last two weeks really digging in to the remix, with several listens to the original mix for reference. The original, produced by Phil Spector, was the version that we all have loved, but theres always been a group of fans wanting to hear a clearer, less cluttered mix than the wall of sound production that Spector used on many tracks. George Harrison himself had wished to remix the album toward the end of his life. Paul Hicks along with Dhani Harrison have attempted this complex project on the 50th Anniversary, and presented it along with a stunning collection of demos and outtakes.
I attempted to not preview any more than the teaser tracks, and shied away from listening to the myriad of reactions to the remix, in order to give you my clear, untainted view of the results. Was it worth the wait? You'll find my opinion (and thats all it is - one opinion) at the end of the video.
Whatever one thinks of the remix, it's been wonderful to revisit this fascinating masterpiece, and celebrate the life of George Harrison.

It really is the 'gold standard' for this album. I was hoping for a tasteful improvement but it wasn't achieved with this remix.

Hi Francisco, Thanks for watching and commenting. It's always a joy to hear this album no matter which version it is. I guess the original mix is so ingrained in my mind my preference lies there. It is after all my favorite album of all time. I'm glad to have another version to enjoy, and I think certain tracks here benefit in some ways. I'm glad you are enjoying this release, it's a bit different than I expected for sure but it's a beauty in its own right.

My older brother bought All Things Must Pass just after it came out. He was 21, I was 12 and he looked me in the eye and said George Harrison is the greatest Beatle and i believed him....Until I got into high school. It surely is the best solo effort of all The Beatles, I'll give him that. But he never got close to those heights again. Critical & Financial. Of course it was all tied in to Apple and Allen Klein. He probably never got his fair share. Poor Bugger. They all did their best work within a few years after the break up. As far as this album goes, The Wall of Sound didn't age well for me....Or George!

I think it is the greatest collection of songs any of them did. Not counting the Apple Jam it's pretty tight, and of course it could have made a killer single disc. But I like its sprawling nature and though the wall of sound can be a little much on some cuts, when it's stripped back as they did here, it really didn't work So I prefer the original mix and always will. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Totally agree with you and with the point that this album deserved BETTER. They should have (at least) added the 2010 remaster in the box set!! A treat for those who wanted a best version of the original mix.

Hi Rory, I returned to watch this video after many months, and thought maybe I was being too negative...but I pulled out the box and put on the remix to hear in my updated system and I still felt the same. It's hard not to love these songs but, I agree that the original mix, even with its minor drawbacks, is vastly superior to this. The 2010 is my preferred version though the original and last one are runners up. The remix comes in last. A shame really, I really hoped we would get something special, and the set itself is beautiful, but they missed the mark big time. Thanks so much for your comment.

@@ThePressingMatters I even do prefer the 2014 cd (which is a bit dark sounding too , IMHO) to this remix. I praise the Apple (?) lord we someday get a 2010 remaster re-release on vinyl. That is THE best sounding version. Not too bright, not too muffled, and clearer than the OG.

@@rorylane4069 Apparently Steve Hoffman mastered the original mix of the album but it was cancelled before production. I think this was when he was at DCC. He had done some of the other solo Beatles records on CD with great results. That is a version that I'd love to hear, but I don't think it ever escaped! I was really hoping for a full on audiophile quality remaster of the original mix done right. The 2010 will do nicely until then :-)

I agree with you. I have the 3-CD set. I haven't heard the vinyl and don't intend to buy this in vinyl. I've been trying to warm up to the new mixes, but I feel the same disappointment. I've been listening to the remixes repeatedly and at home and in the car and I have found that streaming via Amazon works best. Frankly, it's annoying and inexcusable that listeners have to make efforts to listen to a remixed album due to it not sounding good. I mean, that's a failure on the part of the producers and production team. I'm going to listen to my CDs a couple more times and then probably never listen to them again. I have the CD set of the 30th Anniversary and I recently bought a very nice vinyl set of the 2014 remasters. Those will be just fine. The new mixes make me cringe too much, even while I am trying, really trying, to like them. The listener should enjoy and love every track of a remixed album and not have the feeling, same as you, that some tracks are 'a mess.' Nothing on it should be a mess, but that's the case.

Was surprised and amazed recently to hear the new All Things Must Pass blu ray stereo remixes. Paul Hicks, the remix engineer on ATMP (along with Dhani Harrison), did an incredible remix of Imagine under Yoko Ono's supervision in 2020. Apparently the original All Things Must Pass was recorded on 8 track. Phil Spector's 'Wall of Sound' meant effects were added at the time of recording rather than during mixing- having been bounced down with individual tracks containing several instrumental takes. This meant individual tracks and effects could not be rebuilt from scratch for the new mix. Compression was then added resulting in a heavily clipped sound profile - a very warm sounding mix lacking treble with very little instrumental separation. (Part of me wonders what different outcomes might have been possible without Dhani Harrison's involvement in this process?) It's a great shame that such a classic album may never see full restoration due to the unorthodox recording methods utilised by a producer who in the 60s was seen as a era defining pioneer in the art of sound recording!

Definitely a missed opportunity. A shame since the deluxe vinyl package was absolutely top notch. I'm still glad to have it but admittedly haven't pulled it out for a listen since the first several listens. Makes me treasure even more my other pressings. I guess that might be the last time this is attempted but who knows. With all the advances in technology we could very well get a version that gives us what was promised.

Im a huge George fan..have all his albums, bootlegs, was blessed to see him in concert in 74 and 92...and I am so disappointed in the remix. Muffled, no highs, all the majesty has been taken out. I love all the extras and the book but I will never listen to the remix ever again. You can't improve on perfection! Still love the original mix George and Phil did. The best Beatles solo album!

I returned my 8 Lp set to Amazon for a refund and have no regrets. The albums sounded muffled, the tambourines, hi hats, cymbals seemed to be compressed to the point where they were hardly audible. The dish warps on 3 of the 8 vinyl discs was the final straw.

I seriously considered it but my replacement set was better. I put together a good set from the two before returning the bad one to Amazon. Since the records are fine, I'll keep it especially for the demos.

I simply love the Remix. First time all details can be heard. Vocals, horns, strings. The awful overblown overproduction in Wah Wah, Art of Dying or Let it down in my ears (Bose earphones) is replaced with first time good sound. The mix does the quality of the songs and musicians justice. That s what you get here. I think George would have this wanted. He was never happy with the mud of sound.

To me it's like SOME details can be heard for the first time which is interesting. It's what's faded down that is so hard to get used to. But I guess we don't have to live with a version we're not totally happy with because now we have both. Thanks for watching!

I pretty much agree with your observations. The remixes are sometimes good, sometimes not so good. Example Beware of darkness, not as good somehow. The simpler songs DO sound better overall. Didn't like Wah-Wah in 1970, still don't. But this is still one of my all time favorite Albums, by George or by anyone. Run of the Mill remains, in my view, one of George's most underrated songs.

It is pretty obvious that the only truly authorized versions were the one done in 1970 and 2000 by George Harrison himself. He accomplished what he wanted to with both of those versions what we have here is a ham-handed money grab by a woman who I have known personally and I find in my opinion not to be of good character.. I met George at a private home in 1984 with his wife loved him didn't care for her

Hi Rick, Thank you for your comment. I really was so disappointed that they blew this. I agree with you, they should have let someone with the experience, such as Steven, to do a proper remix job. I imagine it's a very difficult task and it has to be done with sensitivity and respect. This job had neither quality. At least the packaging of the 8 LP set was top notch. But the audio sadly, not.
