Ringo plays with a unique sort of swing feel that's really hard to duplicate, but really stood out when I first heard them back in the 1960's. Covers of songs like 'She loves you' never sounded right because the drummers always played the standard rock beat and it sounded rigid compared to Ringo.

I consider that very important. A technically brilliant drummer with no feel, can ruin a record. Some songs are emotional like "Open Arms" by Journey. Neil Peart is a drum god, but I think Steve Smith knew instinctively where to place beats and it lifted the track. I meant to mention Ainsley Dunbar, Journey's earlier drummer in this response but his name escaped me at the time. He is also a great drummer, but Dunbar wouldn't have been suitable for that song. "Feel" and instinct for a song is the primary reason Steely Dan records too long to record. They wanted the right musician for the right song.

@@lifenote1943 I don't think drums or rhythm guitar is support. I actually think the drums are what set the tone of the song, so to speak. Exactly. People only pay attention to technicality. What they never understand is just how difficult it truly is to play and connect with a band as smoothly as he can, as well as keeping as great of time that he can. Sure it's easy to be a great drummer technically with ages of practice, but actually being able to play with others amazingly (which is the drummers job) is the most important thing a drummer can do, and if you can't easily connect with anyone else, while still being creative, having a voice, and serving the song you're screwed

YES!!!! I had no idea George said this but I've put my guitar down for months or more periodically throughout my journey and I've absolutely benefited from it. I always called it :"letting the creative waters dam". Every time I come back it's a fresh creative palette. Helps with muscle memory too.

All classes are simple, classical music ( comparing to jazz) clasic radio, classic art, classic books. the Beatles are the raw begins of an entire wave of music the ripples are still going today. He sounded simple he invented a lot and inspired most the people I like now. Classic

Go watch the YT vid of the Beatles playing - RAIN - then you will see and hear how damn good and talented and innovative he was (and still is). When you watch that entire video (B&W) - he had just been with the other 3 about 2 years - still quite young. Watching him work he looks lazy, but really he is very very efficient and looks like a duck paddling his ass off - and not a ripple in the water - you’ll see.

My favorite Ringo story is the one he tells about where or when he got the idea for "Octopus Garden", then recording it with the Beatles. Pure Ringo. As far as drumming goes, he considers himself highly creative in the studio, something I have never doubted, with his main weakness being his lefthandness, limiting his drum breaks. He is also creative with language or words, having inspired "Hard Day's Night, and "Tomorrow Never Knows," among others. And still find his drumming on TNK, some fine wildass studio drumming. Not to mention his epic miminalist drum solo on Abbey Road. A drummer's drummer.

In over 300 Beatles recordings Ringo Starr played drums not as a percussive instrument by itself, 4/4, but as a musical instrument played together with bass, two guitars and vocals, each as different as the different songs themselves!! He never just kept time and added accent, but played notes as part of the song's melody itself!! Never repeated any single song's drum part, but played each song entirely seperate!! He is perhaps one of the most underrated of all rock drummers!! A brilliance all his own, and in a large part most often overlooked, and strangely eclipsed by masters like Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Keith Moon et al, made the bed upon which the Bestles songs were crafted to become the unique music it still remains today!!

What George was describing is actually profound insight to any musician. What he really was saying is it’s the SPIRIT not the practice. If you took practice and the technicalities as the defining attributes, then sure, both ringo and George were “bad” in that sense, but the Beatles proves that technicality is only an avenue, not the ONLY avenue to a successful song or melody or beat or rhythm. George was suavely giving priceless advice on how to capture SPIRIT with music. Which is what music is all about. A spirit about whatever that you hear and feel through the sound waves. This can be done with a spoon and a voice. Music is so much more than technicalities, and Ringo knew the spirit of it like almost no others.

Thats humble and makes sense. They were so busy in such a short time. Also they wrote so much music. Had he been more technical and complicated, he would have made his own job much harder. Look how chill he looks all the time. Like hes got a drumstick in 2 hands, tea in another, newspaper in another, reading the sunday funnys.

As a (very) amateur drummer who loves to play, I believe I was born left-handed. According to my mother, I was switched to being a righty when I was very young, because conventional thinking a hundred years ago said being a lefty was no good. When I started playing drums, I found it easier to cross my midline and go around the kit from right to left. I think I’ve heard Ringo say something similarly. All this to say, I’ve always loved Ringo’s drumming - it’s so solid and consistently creative.
