Hi, this is Jay P. Morgan. Today on The Slanted Lens we're looking at the four principles George Hurrell used when creating his iconic portraits of Hollywood actors and actresses. And we're using Rosco's (www.rosco.com) LED LitePad Vector lights to do it.

In B/B, red doesn't automatically go black. First, it depends on the luminance of the red, second on the film's colour balance. Lastly it could depend on the filter. Since portrait photographers tended to use red filters to get more radiant and flawless skin, red lipstick would go very bright grey. To counteract that, many B/W portrait photographers would actually have their sitters wear green lipstick, which would go darker the stronger a red filter they used.

I love these kinds of portraits and trying to learn how to take them, so this was great, even though I realize it is far more difficuot to get it right than it looks in the video :-) Thanks!

It always amazes me how some viewers take the content provided as a Hurrell "style" session and critique every point of the video. The video was informative and showed what can be done with LED panels. Most fans of photography understand that Hurrell's equipment was totally different from today without the need to spew out "snobby" comments. Well done Jay, it was an interesting video!

Not quite. Using tungsten hot lights with their much lower UV content allows makeup to work much better than with LEDs. A fresnel spotlight was used at a much longer distance which was another vital ingredient. Hurrels' lenses had much higher spherical aberration which was an important part of the look as well. The modern lens which works the best for this style is the rare and not well known Nikkor 105 f2.5 DFC.

agylub I'm not convinced that the hot lights were often a long way away, there are two reasons for this.. Stories of Herrell's studios have rumour of a massive room with a probable balcony, but also rumour of a small space of which he was apparently also somewhat embarrassed about on at least one occasion. Also, looking through the pictures on Google, there's at least one picture I've seen in which the shadows suggest the light was around 2ft out of shot.. There's possibly also a picture of Herrell with a light.

I am a complete newbie. I will have to go and practice and see if I am able to position the lights to get the looks. I would have loved it if you would have shown the lights positions for each pic you took 😊 it would have given me a clearer idea

Red lips don't go dark on all black and white films, that's why many times the photographer would use a green filter over the lens. Green filters subtracts red making it appear darker. The warmer the light source the lighter red lips are going to look. Ortho film, for example, is not sensitive to red and therefore red lips will appear darker. Ortho film was often used for masculine portraits because it gave a more ruddy look. This is not to take away from anything J P. Morgan has to say...he is a master photographer in every sense of the word.

Why use a tripod and set the ISO as high (1250) instead to increase the exposure duration ? (I suppose that the aperture value at f4.0 is a stylistic choice / or the lens cannot open wider). This ISO value could lead to more noise effect, no ?

Vectors (with grid) looks special at first sight... better than heavy complex set with Aputure COB120 LED with soft box... somewhat strange... but the price +3k for a 3 units kit... pffffffffffffft !

Would these be bright enough for shooting large format film at f16 and full bellows extension?

These were 1/40 at f/4 at 1200 iso. So if you're shooting 400 speed film you're going to have shutter speeds down at around a second or two at least.

I realize this vid is somewhat old so I’m hoping that I can get an answer as to what kind of power wattage u were using five years ago on your constant lighting?? since constant lights have greatly reduced in price, im thinking i would like to get some and work them into some of my work. With the LED lights being anywhere from 45 to 60 W - the few i have been looking at- I was wondering if yours were that strong, stronger (?) is that all you need if you have one or two of them? 45-60w each I know they make them stronger or so they are rated as higher wattage capacity but if you do not need higher and or need to spend the money for higher watts, will 45-60 W per lite panel do? with decent shutter speed as well!! ive only shot with strobes so far - thanks for any advice btw, thanks for this fantastic vid/info… the images look beautiful!! 👌🏼

I use mostly 150 watts and higher. And if you are not shooting video it is better to stick with strobes.

c'est bien mais en meme temps c'est tres tres moyen comme photo, les panneaux leds, ne sont pas fait pour ça, ils n'arrivent pas a créer le modelé et le sculpté et surtout le velouté nécessaire pour faire ce genre d'image, c'est une approximation, sur le style, mais rien ne remplacer un mole richardson en fresnel de 10 pouces, et rien ne remplacera non plus un dedolight ou du godox avec lentille et surtout un nombre important de spot, pour bien créer du modelé en point par point ....

wrong lights wrong lens. Close but no cigar. Using 150W halogen Fresnels will give you a much more authentic look but they are some what more challenging to use. Hotlights also render skin much more appealing. . The only modern lens that come close to the 300mm lens Hurrell used is The Nikon 105 f2.5 DFC. A lens with controllable spherical aberration. An LED with a Grid is not a spotlight.
