One of the reasons for cowboy hats is to prevent skin cancer and the larger cowboy hats are basically an umbrella on your head, protecting your scalp, your neck, and your face. Lots of skin cancer in Texas. In the old days it was called consumption. And in the short-term it prevents some pretty nasty blistering sunburns.
