He's not bad, really a master of a certain kind of tone, and very enjoyable to listen to. But I still prefer the soulful nature of Jim Croce's voice or the darkness and raw power of Howlin Wolf's voice. This quote is credited to a man who did not have a bad voice either.

I saw him live only once. Before he came on stage, somebody set up an armchair and side table downstage right; then a handsome gentleman escorted Miss Nancy to the chair and saw her comfortably seated with a beverage on the table. Then George walked on stage. The audience jumped to its collective feet and applauded and hooted for 6 solid minutes while the man stood at the mic gently smiling and waving. During the performance, Miss Nancy kept her eyes on him or looked down in a ladylike way. George looked at her occasionally during the performance, which was, of course, perfect.

There is only one country king - George Jones. Everyone else is a pretender to the throne. NOTE OF CLARIFICATION: In NO way did I mean to dis Hank Sr. here. Of course, he was the major pioneer who blazed the male country trail. His songs mirrored his life of personal struggles; they were brilliant tracks and stand supreme to this day. And the world lost him far too young - a true tragedy. Jones adored Hank. Yet he went on to blaze trails of his own, singing songs of HIS troubles, with heartbreaking honesty. And that is why we love him. He is our mirror. And he sings with that VOICE! The voice that G-d surely gave to one man alone.

Yes sir I agree. This is the only known video with veteran of the TX live country music scene Rob Dixon playing electric for Jones. He was tasked with putting a completely new band together for George. He was only his band leader & guitar player for right at one year. It's strange for me to see him then because I never met Rob until 2019 when he retired from performing and I ended up taking over his band as the front man/guitarist and the remaining gigs still on the books. He is now the really great soundman at Southern Junction a TX dancehall and restaurant outside of Dallas in the Rockwall area. He finally came into possession of this still commercially unavailable Austin City Limits episode. This was filmed at a time when they knew very little of Jones' material which is the reason for Johnny Gimble singing several tunes.

Most people that are the best at their trade have some sort of vice they rely a little too heavy on..the stress of doing the best that they can when they’ve started from the bottom and worked up gets to them by the time (and after) they’ve achieved the success that they’ve been chasing.
@reazorbackty49
@reazorbackty49 2 ай бұрын
George Jones was almost ALWAYS at least somewhat hammered on stage. But even by George Jones standards, his 1980 version of "hammered" (having added blow to the mix, in addition to already drinking alcohol at a volume and frequency that would kill most humans) was at or near the nadir of his 50+ year struggles with his addictions. He's obviously not at 100% strength, vocally speaking, in this performance. Granted, George Jones at 65-70% vocal strength is still better than most stars at their best. I'm really glad he was able to get clean in the final years of his life. The fact that he even lived to see the year 1980, let alone that he went on to live more than three decades beyond that, is nothing short of miraculous. I hope that, in the sobriety of his twilight years, and with Nancy by his side, he was finally able to experience peace, and some portion of the joy that he gave to so many millions of others for so long.

@@kerrydavidsadler980 wow, thank u for the tip. Broadcast tv is honestly the only place you can see this stuff if not youtube. Dvd and streaming won't pay for the music rights. Things are going to have to change so we can get shows like this on home video and streaming.

Then it sounds like you saw a show likely very much like this one. I am friends with the guitar player in this show who actually resigned at some point in 1981. George Jones is the artist I saw live more than any other. If I hadn't seen Jones a few times between 1993 and 2010 or so then Conway would have been who I saw the most. My first concert seeing Jones was around 1987 I THINK. All of the concerts I saw of him had Conway Twitty as the headliner but a few different opening acts: Ronnie McDowell, Vern Gosdin, & finally Vince Gill until 1993. Then it was always different artists with him. The reason I saw him so much or any country artist for that matter from 1985 (10yrs old) until 1998 was because my Dad was an advertising man for Pepsi. He would buy tickets to all concerts that were the real deal and take store owners or managers as a business expense. As his son who loved country music, what he gave me by taking me with him was the biggest gift in the world.

@@waylonvids That’s awesome. I was 8 at the 1981 show. Don’t remember too much about it except Mom & Dad wanted to leave when Jerry Lee apparently came on stage inebriated lol. They were from that pre rock n roll, Hank Williams era so I grew up with what’s now called classic country always playing in the house. I had tix in 1995 to see George but he “ no-showed”.

I think Nick Offerman could do well as GJ in a biopic. Since nobody really looks like George, you have to evoke him. Offerman has tons of strained intensity, plus he sings. I DO think that Michael Shannon was terrific as GJ in the "George and Tammy" multi-episode show originally on Hulu. Talk about restrainted intensity! And his singing was spot-on.

Johnny Gimble's expression is so affectionate and kind. Not to mention his playing has that brilliant, yet gentle quality too. In fact all the interplay between the guitarist, pedal steel guy and Johnny Gimble is quite impressive. This is an amazing amazing line up....everyone is 100% on their A game

I was high on meth in Clinton iowa. I had just dropped off from hitchhiking from savanna Illinois out of this big biker bar they've got there. I met this dude who was a meth cook and I went with him back to his his place to "get high"...turns out he was a queer. He was respectful though and ingot.put of their wihlthout a murder charge or any PTSD. dropped me at the walmart and as.inwasnwalkong through.the place I seen all the memorial magazines on the shelves by the register...brother, I sat down and cried. And read every one. And the ladies in the store come up to tell me I had to move along, or I wasn't allowed to read without buying...when they seen what.inwas reading and the state I was in, they just said sorry.and went about their business.
