It's an interesting to theorize how differently things might have played out had he done more. They wanted Lazenby back for seven more films, that would have made his last film Octopussy. Then again, he was 49 when License to Kill was made in 1989 - the same age Pierce Brosnan was when he did Die Another Day. Likewise, Roger Moore was pushing 58 when he did the role of Bond for the last time. When Lazenby was 58, they were shooting Tomorrow Never Dies. He could easily have played Bond well into the 90s.
@user-xp2gm8im2c5 жыл бұрын
Jarrah White Lazenby doesn't fit as Bond in O.H.M.S.S. and in the era of comedy/parody that was coming. That era begins with ''Diamonds are Forever'' and finishes with ''Octopussy''. Moore, especially from ''The Spy Who Loved Me'' was the right man for that time (except ''A View to a Kill'' had to play Dalton). Producers didn't come back to Lazenby, as they did with Connery although he said he left the role, and until now with more conventional Bond films, they didn't provide the role of Bond in a model who is no actor and completely novice.

Yeah, but who cares. He had one of the best Bond movies. Brosnan did five but only Goldeneye was truly great. It isn't about the quantity, but the quality.

George Lazenby served in the Australian Army Special Forces and was an Army Unarmed Combat instructor. A genuine tough guy who did a great job as Bond.

George Lazenby was the most human of all the Bonds. He loses at the card table, he loses his cool and quits MI6, the girl ditches him, he can't save the girl without her father's help, he fails to kill the villains and he allowes his wife to be murdered. These are all human flaws and weaknesses. On Her Majesties Secret Service is a breath of fresh air as in compared to other Bond movies where Bond is next to invincible and his enemies with their henchmen are a bunch of blundering idiots. Some of these movies were so predictable that they are comparable to video games so easy they practically play themselves. Where is the suspense and the fun in that??? This was a movie that showed the more vulnerable and realistic as stated before human side of James Bond.

@Modernww2fare3 жыл бұрын
Funny enough, I see Dalton's Bond as the evolved version of Lazenby's considering he's trying to atone for the events of OHMSS.
@glamdolly303 жыл бұрын
@Adolf Berghanus I agree, Lazenby was great and though he came in for a lot of flak over the years for leaving the role after his debut, his performance in OHMSS is lauded today and has passed the ultimate test - time. I worked on this BBCTV special in 2002 and chatted to George Lazenby at length after the show. He was a really lovely, humble guy. I think it's a shame he couldn't have made at least one more Bond movie, as his talent warranted. But from speaking to him about it that night, I think he'd be the first to admit he lacked the maturity at the time, and the self belief, to continue in the role. He told me he found the whole Bond legacy too big a burden to carry. I also think Connery was a very hard act to follow - especially for an actor who was the same rugged physical type. The comparisons with his predecessor were endless - and as unflattering as they were unfair. Because Lazenby didn't make more than one Bond movie, he didn't get a chance to make the role his own. I think that's a shame. Roger Moore's success from LIVE AND LET DIE onwards, surely owed a lot to his reinvention of Bond. There's only one Sean Connery, and after Lazenby I think the Bond franchise realised they needed to totally reinvent 007 with a new interpretation of the character. In Roger Moore, whose style and energy was so different to Connery's, they did just that. Incidentally, I really admired George Lazenby for accepting our invitation to join the 40th anniversary BAFTA tribute to Bond. It was not the easiest occasion for him, meeting up with all his successors in the role after being so unfavourably compared with them over the years. Lazenby's presence at the event was very important to us - we had hoped to get the full set of Bonds, but we always knew Connery was unlikely to accept the invitation due to his long-running feud with the late Bond producer Cubby Broccoli. He was making a movie in Europe at the time we recorded, so could easily have flown to London and taken part. But as pretty much everyone predicted, he declined. That put even more pressure on the booking team to secure all the other Bonds for the show, and thankfully we did. George Lazenby courageously showed up alone, and behaved with great dignity. He was well aware he was the least respected of all the Bonds, not least for his short tenure in the part, but nonetheless he had occupied the legendary role and no one could take that away from him! I felt host Michael Parkinson was a bit dismissive of him in their encounter. But George responded in good humour, and didn't let it faze him. I spent a lot of time with him at the after show party, held at the British Science Museum. He looked a little awkward when he arrived, like a fish out of water, so I invited him to join my group of friends and he stayed and chatted with us all evening. What a warm, intelligent and fascinating man - he was great company, and entertained us with many funny stories! At one point Roger Moore joined us, and he and George had a long and animated chat. Mr Moore is another true gentleman who doesn't take himself too seriously - I wasn't at all surprised that they got on like a house on fire. It was a memorable night. I found George Lazenby, Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan (who I met a few times over the years), to be warm, modest and genuinely lovely men. Sean Connery invented the movie role and will always be the most iconic and authentic physical embodiment of Bond as written by Ian Fleming. But his successors each brought something special to the screen, and that's as true of George Lazenby as it is the actors who had many more Bond outings. I'm glad Lazenby is finally getting the recognition and respect he deserves for his brief but superb interpretation of 007.

personally, I believe that Geroge Lazenby would probably be one of the best Bond if he had the chance to play the role for two to three times. His sexy physical looking and smoothy screen playing fighting skills have somewhat redefined the entire roles in the late 1960s. However, Sean Connery very successfully played the role in the 1960s, people didn't have any preparation to see another one to play the role.

Well, he definitely lost a lot of his Australian accent, but remember, in the scenes in On Her Majesty's Secret Service where he was impersonating Sir Hilary (which is a big chunk of the film), his voice was dubbed by another actor, George Baker (the actor who plays the Sir Hilary whom he is impersonating). @KOMania-nv2im8 жыл бұрын
The Watcher What's wrong with thinking that Lazenby is better then Moore? Just because Moore did 7 films and Lazenby did only 1, that does not mean that Moore is better. Lazenby's film is better then all of Moore's Bond films combined. I like Roger Moore's Bond but his films were nothing special, they had great stunts and special effects but no character development. Lazenby is far better suited to the role of Bond then Moore. Lazenby is athletic and looks great in the figth scenes and did his own stunts. Moore doesn't look believable playing a spy, he's not athletic and looks terrible in most of his figth scenes. And he uses too many stunt doubles! I think Roger could have been a better Bond if he was younger, he was too old when he took the part. I don't blame him for not doing his own stunts because of his age, he started at 45, the age that real life spies retire! But I do enjoy some of his Bond films like TSWLM or FYEO and I think he was a good Bond and was very charismatic. Overall Lazenby is better in my book, his acting was great as well, I don't understand all the hate he gets.

OHMSS is an excellent entry in the 007 franchise. Lazenby did an amazing job considering that he had next to nothing in terms of acting experience. It's such a shame that his agent gave him terrible advice. Being the youngest 007 actor, he could've probably have the longest run as 007. Even then, he should've at least done Diamonds are Forever; Tracy deserved to be properly avenged in the next entry. With Connery returning instead, they went out of their way to ignore OHMSS and act like the events of that movie never happened.

Nothing to do with his agent. Have you seen “Becoming Bond”? He explains it all himself that he would not be controlled. Everyone saying his agent did this and said that are just wrong.

The only redeeming quality of OHMSS is Diana Rigg

She is definitely essential to it's success.

@@waynej2608 Agreed she was wonderful. George Lazenby gave a beautiful tribute to Dame Diana Rigg on her recent death. Whatever people say about his interpretation of Bond, the man is a class act.

@@glamdolly30 That's good to know. Not surprising, as Lazenby strikes me as a classy guy, as Diana was a classy lady. And, I think he made a great Bond and I would've liked to have seen him continue in the role, after Connery.
@glamdolly303 жыл бұрын
@@waynej2608 I agree, it's a real shame he only did one Bond movie, it was not enough to put his mark on the role, and make it his own. And he acquitted himself well in 'OHMSS', the movie holds up well and has passed the ultimate test of time.
