Not to defend him too much, but to be fair since book 5 he's written 4 episodes, 4 short stories, two and a half history and helped the writers room on HOTD. I get the impression that just like he did with book 5, where he spent 10 months on a single chapter because too many pov characters was present and he needed a character who would have been able to see all from the event and could relay that information to people who saw parts and slightly different things. It's simpler writing from A to Z than the pov being novels within novels still telling a beginning middle and end for each chapter, each arc and overall story. It didn't help having the show giving away the ending up.

@@dcworld4349I think he’s written too many detailed characters. He probably wrote himself into several corners where he’s now stuck. I know he’s looked at hiring other writers to help him finish.

@@Dapryor Yes I imagine he's constantly had to rewrite for that reason alone. It's all well and good that he knows where the principle characters ends up. His self admitted writing style seems like it's clashing with the scope. By removing the one chapter he's talked about regarding Tyrion it sounded like if he had put it in, Tyrion would have needed an entire book just to get it resolved before getting back to the main story. At this point if he actually does want to see the series be finished. The only way that is going to happen is if he finds a really good writing partner who fully understands the world, the characters. And George giving that writer a very detailed outline about how he wants his version of the story to unfold to get to the ending we now know it's headed towards, even though several details will be different. I'm not trying to be mean, it's just not realistic to think that if by some miracle the next book comes out this years. That he will be able to continue writing into his 90s given just how long it's going to take for him to write Spring. Forget about the fact that he might not live that long. I can count on one hand the number of people in their 90s that I know of who had all of their mental faculties in place even though their bodies were not able to do what they did before.

What George is describing is very relatable to me. I've never been able to do work of any kind on an airplane or a car. I also struggle to work on parallel projects.

George can write and the story is all in his head, the problem is his success. We can all cook for ourselves but cooking for others and especially knowing people will judge it makes the task very difficult. Also his story has become so huge with countless threads that adds to the difficulty.

I don't think GRRM can finish ASOIAF at this point. He's a self described "gardener" writer, aka discovery or pantser writer. He writes without much, if any, plotting or outlining. I think that had his editor(s) reined him in earlier on to make sure he stayed on target, he could have finished the series by now. However, because of his way of writing, he didn't involve enough outlining in his process to account for the numerous plotlines he created over time and let get away from him. He wrote himself into his own Gordian Knot. Frankly, I don't think he can write a satisfactory ending to ASOIAF due to the tangled mess it has become unless he brings on another writer with discipline who can help sort it out. To properly end the series would require more novels than I think he's willing to write at this stage of his life.

you shouldn't expect him to, overweight and 7X year old? took 10 years and counting for winds of winter, means the next book will not be ready by the time he dies, I assume he wants to leave it unfinished, sort of lotr with tolkien never really "finishing" the universe

We all need to just organize a George RR Martin boycott. We aren't watching any shows, going to any Cons, watching any interviews, or reading anything else he writes until winds is done. This is rediculous. I started this in fuckin 1998. I was 16. I'm 42 now.

He honestly looks like he's about to cry in a couple of spots. Cut him some slack, he's trying. I think WoW will come out but I really doubt the last book will ever release. I think he should just try to wrap it up with Winds (and write a very detailed roadmap in the event of his death to have someone finish off whatever is left if needed lmao.)

It is obvious 1. read random history books 2. roughly mix together those stories 3. change names, add dragons and magic 4. write aimlessly into the night without a clue about the actual structure 5. never finish because you have not thought ahead. That is his method. He is a fraud and an uppity screenwriter.

@@kaceynm More like blatantly plagiarized with no citations given. There is a difference between "fantasy set in the middle ages" and "fantasy that copies the narrative of the war of the roses amongst others." Even if you do not read actual history yourself, there is a hint in GRRM prolix. You know how in real history, the narrative does not follow a classic structure? That is because history always continues. It has no ending. Sound familiar? GRRM's nonsense also lacks structure in the same way. He can not end anything, which is why he'll never finish the series. He knows he is a hack and a fraud.
