Wasn’t GRRM just about a year ago saying that fans were too fixated on faithful adaptations and that they hated things before seeing them?
@Zethonring23
@Zethonring23 Ай бұрын
It's awful how things have become, I used to have all these idea of great novels and historical events I'd like to see adapted for the screen but lately I just don't know anymore, I'm too afraid of these egotistical directors and showrunners that think they know better, trying to "reimagine" or "modernize" the story rather than giving us a faithful retelling. But at the same time I still want an adaptation for my own entertainment and so more people can discover and fall in love with these stories too, such a pain. Also, my favourite miniseries is probably Angels in America, dude that Al Pacino monologue with Patrick Wilson blew me away, I'd just be walking around my house reciting it for months afterwards 😂

I personally asked GRRM once, if he preferred TNG or DS9 more and he answered "FORBIDDEN PLANET".. 😅

I was reading these hardboiled Italian crime novels by Massimo Carlotto and the translator of the book to English made interesting comments how you want to keep the tone of the book and the original creator intent intact but many phrases in one language don't work in English as they would in the original language. So in a way he is forced of rewrite some sentences or sections for an English audience but if he wanted he could have translated the book to make it his own instead of the author's European sensibility.

Writers continuously try to "subvert expectations" or update a work for "modern audiences" as opposed to respecting the source material and then act surprised when there's a massive backlash.

The MCU (civil war, avengers) are examples of this. Same with Shogun. The writing this era is terrible. fanfiction is so much better. Check put Spider-Man lotus snd compare that to No Way Home.

Sometimes when a franchise goes on for so many years they have to retool it fit with modern times. The Roger Moore Bond was nothing like the book Bond in fact the movie version of Bond has long been sperated from the original Bond. Not only the books written after Fleming was a mix of both Bonds.

The point is more making it your own. You can’t get some horrendously racist book or sexist book in parts and put that into a modern audience

This is one of those things that it depends when it comes to accepting books or comics into movies. We can look Ian Flaming's Bond, first the movie version of James Bond isn't anything like the original James Bond and hasn't been for decades. Second tech and the spy business has change and in order to keep up with the times James and the stories has to keep up. He can be a smooth son of bitch but how he goes about in a different way than he did in late 50s. If you want to keep a franchises going to need to get fresh blood and new ideas. Now you still have to hold on to the core of the characters or the world. On the other hand if you are accepting a book or a play something singler story with no interested in some greater franchise than it is best to stick closer to the thing to adapt. Now I say this partly because I am still pissed they changed the ending of Hannibal from the book, but also believe that if you are just trying to make one movie and not some massive franchise than you should you the story in the book you are adapting. Not as Stanley Kubrick did more than once gut it and use the book as a frame work for you want to do.

GRRM used to talk often, whether interviews or on his blog about Marvel films. He Loved Sony's first two Spider-Man films, Iron Man and Captain America The First Avenger. Because he said they really stuck to Stan Lee work. He also seemed to like Ant-Man and Doctor Strange as those are two of his favorite characters. He really didn't like the first Thor film as he felt they changed too much.

My favorite miniseries was Centennial. If only Chesapeake had been adapted, it would have been fantastic to see the Turlocks portrayed. Hollywood adaptations will almost invariably be worse than the source material. Only the tiniest fraction of books are truly successful...it's a numbers game with occasional big winners subsiding the remainder. Hollywood focuses on retelling these few elite stories, of course. The problem is that it's exceedingly hard to catch lightning in a bottle once ... and they want to change out the bottle

Martin is one to talk when he bashed Tolkien's LOTR books. GoT is overrated. What they did with Thrawn was ridiculous and I still don't consider Disney Star Wars canon.

@@pferreira1983 I think you're being slightly unfair to Martin here. He's a huge Tolkien fan and cited him as a major influence. He did however criticize some aspects of his works, like bringing Gandalf back from the dead. You can be a huge fan of something and still find some minor flaws with it. Criticism isn't necessarily "bashing," and anything wrought by human hands is flawed because we are deeply flawed creatures. That includes the Lord of the Rings.

I read the Thrawn trilogy a few years ago and I don't get why it's so popular. In my view it wasn't very good because there where too many contrivances and childlike setup and payoffs for plot points.
