In the dead of December of 2007, nearly 16 years to this very night, I’d departed Copenhagen having just laid my mother to rest and was making my way in near blizzard conditions to Skagen, the northern most tip of Europe with its mystical battling straits and its almond skies. I stayed at Ruth, a marvelous resort hotel with no one there except a Saudi family one night in the dining area. I arrived beaten and stripped in a room of typical Danish minimalism and in a strange twist of days, this Greek composer’s music filled the one compact disc that was there for me to play. I’ve spent a lifetime living music, breathing music, clinging to music and taking flight to music but of all the songs and notes I’ve ever heard, it has been these tender sparse near lullabies that always cut the deeply sweetest …
