I learned to play it on my harmonica when I was a kid probably 45 years ago. But I always favored the Marty Robbins version. Having said that George is probably the last real country and western singer. He’s the best.

Gepge Strait is the ONLY artist I've found who sings the correct lyrics, "Come sit by my side ere you leave me." All the others sing, "If you love me." He's heartbroken because she doesn't love him: "For a long time my darling I've waited for the sweet words you never did say" proves this "If you love me" ruins the intended melancholy. Way to go, George! Sing it as it was written.
@stevenyourke79012 жыл бұрын
Red River Valley is a very old folk sing with many different lyrics over the years. There’s no single correct version, as is the case with folk songs generally. The singer is in despair because his / her lover is going away, not because he /she doesn’t love him, although that’s possible, too.
@bilmar19662 жыл бұрын
@@stevenyourke7901 It's a one-way "love." "For a long time, my darling I've waited for the sweet words you never did say" indicate that she's never reciprocated to the "Cowboy who loved you so true."
@stevenyourke79012 жыл бұрын
@@bilmar1966 It’s ambiguous. I think of the ding as sung by a young woman to her liver. She’s waited a long time to hear him ask her to marry him. He never did oriole and now he’s leaving her forever. She’s heartbroken. Maybe she’s expecting his child. Who knows? But they have shared love among the flowers. Why is he leaving? No explanation. She loves him and needs him and expected to become his bride. She thought he loved her, too, and now she’s in doubt. Do you love me? If so, come and sit next to me, do t just run away. Anyway, that’s how I think of the song. If sung by a man, the lyrics make a little less sense to me. Still, a very beautiful and poignant song. I sing it all the time. It’s a lament, a torch song about lost live and heartache and loneliness. Too often, it’s sung like a two-step. I like Jimmy Rodgers rendition because he captures the heartache. He sings it slowly and with deep feelings.

This was my grandfathers song that he sang to us as kids, his favorite song, we always though at the time, grandpa died 38 years ago, I'm 49 now so I was just a kid. He was a West Texas cowboy/ share cropper, rode for the La Espuela Ranch which is now Spur, Texas. His young wife ran off and left the kids, my mom one of them, they almost starved to death while grandpa was at war, all alone in the hardships of the canyons. What our parents and grandparents and beyond went thru, for us, today, is impossible to really understand. I cant believe I've just heard this from George, its perfect, just like I remember Grandpa Marvin singing it to me, we all owe so much, to those that built our nation.

From this valley they say you are going, We will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile, For they say you are taking the sunshine Which has brightened our pathways a while. Chorus Come and sit by my side if you love me; Do not hasten to bid me adieu, But remember the Red River Valley, And the girl that has loved you so true. I've been thinking a long time, my darling, Of the sweet words you never would say, Now, alas, must my fond hopes all vanish? For they say you are going away. Won't you think of the valley you're leaving, Oh, how lonely and sad it will be, Just think of the fond heart you're breaking, And the grief you are causing to me. From this valley they say you are going, When you go, may your darling go too? Would you leave her behind unprotected, When she loves no one other than you. As you go to your home by the ocean, May you never forget those sweet hours, That we spent in the Red River Valley, And the love we exchanged 'mid the flowers. I have promised you, darling, that never Will a word from my lips cause you pain, And my life, it will be yours forever, If you only will love me again. They will bury me where you have wandered, Near the hills where the daffodils grow, When you're gone from the Red River valley, For I can't live without you I know.

I was singing this song to one of my twin granddaughters while rocking her to sleep. I forgot about the baby monitor. When my daughter heard me singing this, she told her father-in-law that she had never heard this song before. He told her what the song was and that she was probably too young to know this song.

Many people believe that the song ''Red River Valley'' is about the Red River in Texas. It isn't. It was written in the 1860's by a Metis (Michif) women to her British Lover at the start of the Metis Rebellion in Canada led by Louis Riel. Riel is known as the father of Manitoba and a huge figure in Canadian history. The Red River starts in Minnesota, forms part of the border between Minnesota and North Dakota, and runs 550 miles north and empties into Lake Winnipeg. These are the original lyrics. O consider awhile ere you leave me, do not hasten to bid me adieu, but remember the Red River Valley, and the half-breed that loved you so true. It's a long time, you know, I've been waiting for the words that you never did say, but alas! all my fond hopes have vanished, for they say you are going away. From this valley they say you are going, I shall miss your blue eyes and sweet smile, and you take with you all of the sunshine that has brightened my pathway awhile. So remember the valley, your're leaving, how lonely and dreary 'twill be; Remember the heart you are breaking and be true to your promise to me. As you go to your home by the ocean may you never forget those sweet hours that we spent in the Red River Valley and the love we exchanged 'mid its bowers. There could never be such a longing in the heart of a pale maiden's breast as dwells in the heart you are breaking with love for the boy who came west. And the dark maiden's prayer for her love to the Spirit that rules all this world is that the sunshine his pathway may cover and the grief of the Red River Girl. thenewstalkers.com/dowser/group_discuss/3771/history-of-the-song-red-river-valley

Thank you for this...makes sense...the Red River of the North...The Metis were French speaking and of course would use "adieu"....perhaps not part of the Texas cowboy's lexicon. Whatever the origin...a very beautiful creation.
