If you think she is crazy in this interview, you should see the 60 minute interview she did in Australia in the late 70s or early 80s. Also when she and her husband the prime Minister visited Cuba nine months later Justin Trudeau so was born and she admitted to having affairs on the Prime Minister. So it’s believed that Fidel Castro is Justin Trudeau‘s real father. So thank you we will need all the good luck we can get.

I remember reading the first two books she wrote, long ago. Quite shocking at the time. I just want to say that in those days we did not understand mental illness. There was limited help. And post-partum depression is no laughing matter. To Margaret's credit, she has tried her best to get well. She seems loving & honest. She has truly been thru a lot in her life. It is fortunate that she has a very supportive family. She manages to keep positive, laughs a lot, & has a wonderful smile. We can't stand in judgement of her.
@skywriting33

I agree. It is disheartening to read so many scathing comments about her. I feel like she is still judged through the 1960’s prism of what a wife and mother should be and the stigma of the hysterical woman (who really has a serious mental health disorder). If those closest to her, her friends and family have chosen to embrace and forgive her, who are we to judge?

I have had BP most of my life (happily balanced now), and it was obvious to me that she was sub-threshold manic in the old 60-min interview - but I also think she had that kind of raw (and very unconventional) insight and wisdom that people have when they see their life taken apart and put together and taken apart again in the ups and downs of depression and mania and don't know what to hold on to...which, as difficult as it is (I think a lot of people don't have an idea of the suffering that inflicts on someone) can be the greatest chance of having to figure out a lot of things that most people leave at the surface because they don't have to face their demons in that way. But here...hm..."youthful folly" and "what did I know back then" and "we just had this generational gap" is not how I would talk or even think about my younger lost and struggling self and the thoughts I had back then and the decisions I made and the dysfunctional relationships I got myself into...is that what Prozac does to you when you take it for decades? Which I didn't even know is used to treat BP, it's not in my part of the world as far as I know. Did she never ask herself what made that girl who told her parents at 17 "I don't care, I just want to be free" and herself "I have to be me" marry a guy like Pierre Trudeau and try to fit herself into a box that said "first lady of Canada"? Or where her "man craziness" and "love craziness" (her words) come from? She talks about having to be aware and going inside but all I'm hearing is "chemical imbalance" and "activating serotonin with exercise"...my heart goes out to everyone who struggles, but there is no getting out of BP and finding balance without doing the actual inner work and addressing the bigger issues.

Such a fascinating, compelling & charming woman. Easy to see what Pierre was drawn to, & easy to see how their diametrical characters would eventually grate & wear on eachother & the marriage would break down. Glorious for a while tho, & they both spoke well of & defended the other long after they divorced. The big change, to me, from the earlier interviews to this one is her self-awareness. Still effervescent, funny, insightful, open & honest, but she brings a clear-eyed perspective here. Great interview of a woman who, even at this point in her life, is still ahead of her time.

NM AT It really is a public service; when first ladies disclose their alcoholism, or depression, they help huge numbers of people they break down the stigma and people go and get help. it’s really a public service what she’s doing; and it’s not that easy to go public about it. people don’t like to talk about their mental mental illness and she does it quite well.

WoW! Some people are just a bunch of negative Nelly’s. Have you all tried living with Bi-polar? Have some sympathy for crying out loud. And who cares if Margaret still carry’s the Trudeau name. Why does that bother people? There’s a lot more serious issues going on in the world than former wives hanging onto a former husband’s last name?? Do any of you follow any global issues at all?? Leave the poor lady alone. Margaret has endured a lot of pain and suffering in her life and we should be offering her encouragement and some compassion . And let’s talk Cuba!!!! I bet half of you on here at one point probably visited Cuba or would love to visit Cuba!! I know I would love to visit ! We r not Americans ! We are Canadians ! Keep up the good fight Margaret and RIP Pierre and Fidel!

Like she describes, with the age difference, I think he was seeing himself as a Sangali that he would shape and finish her off nicely to be the perfect beautiful wife for his administration. He basically wanted Jackie Kennedy but she hadn’t gone through finishing school yet, and she was severely mentally ill , which he didnt see until they were married and he was elected. And then he started to get that she was a handful and he wasn’t going to be able to mold her nicely. Basically I don’t think he really bothered to see her, cared enough, was fine with the superficial acting “as if”, because he didn’t really care; he just wanted a beautiful woman at his side. Chauvinistic but she essentially says it and he was a generation older. It would not have taken much to realize that this is a very disturbed woman. The fact that he didn’t realize that before he got married to her is remarkable to me, because within five minutes of her old interview it was very obvious to me that she was a very sick lady.

Pierre Trudeau was a creep. He liked his women mentally unstable and substantially younger. He dated known nutjobs Barbara Streisand (23 years younger), Margot Kidder (29 years younger) and Debra Coyne (36 years younger). Margaret was 29 years younger than Pierre and completely off her rocker. This is her on meds, mind you. She was actually crazier, if you can believe it.
