Dr. Kang repeated Chinese overcapacity propaganda without a second thought, 87%+ Korea's automobile productions are exports, that number for China is around 6%, meaning the overwhelming majority of Chinese production is for domestic auto market while Korea is the opposite, if overcapacity is a real problem South Korea should be the 1st one on the list to get whacked. she better not complain when there are 100% tariffs against Korean cars.

It is about time that the Asia Society has an Asian as its president. The three short months Dr, Kang has shown her extraordinary leadership in organizing much better events and bringing more knowledgeable and balanced speakers. During the tenure under Rudd, we had mostly only white guests discussing Asia amongst themselves. Thank you, Dr. Kang😢

The Geopolitical issues started all because of the Anglo Saxon issues. All Anglo Saxons listen to their King/Queen, if the new UK King hates China, the whole of Anglo Saxon countries like Canada, US, Australia, New Zealand and East India companies will attack China, either with mainstream media/social media or dividing China’s allies to revolt. All these issues have to do with Charles, the deep problem Anglo Saxons aggression.

@@peterpph126 You are right. It's more an American Society on Asia. Americans always think they speak on behalf of Asians. Let's hope the guest speakers are genuine in looking through the lenses of Asians for the cause of peace.

I'm pleasantly surprised that George Yeo is invited. Asia Society under Kevin Rudd has degenerated to become a forum of guest speakers with known anti-China views to serve not the cause of peace and understanding but one of hate, fears and falsehoods. Kevin mostly kept the comments section closed, a tell tale sign of a propaganda mouthpiece. George has a keen understanding as an observer and practitioner, in cross-cultural and geopolitical dynamics. Above all, he's a man of peace. In these dangerous times when tribal mindset threatens to exterminate humanity, we need more peacemakers than warmongers. The world is doomed if it's about US vs China but incredibly synergic if it's US + China, together with EU, India, Japan and Russia, uplifting the rest of the world to become partners to solve existential global problems. I hope (naively?) that's the mission of Asia Society too. Let's start with the premises that US and China are stronger together, a positive sum game and that they want peace.

Kevin Rudd and many so called "Western Chinese experts" learned to read Chinese words but never understand the cultural philosophies (Confucianism, Taoism, Legalism, etc...). Many proverbs and idioms in Chinese pictographic language/literature need context and explanation to understand the intended Objectives. Hence, George Yeo numerous expansion always add clarity. Just because someone are a visiting scholar for 1 year in China and have access to documents do not mean they can read between the lines and understand the tactical and sometimes contradicting nature of dictum. Pragmatism and outcomes are keys to China guiding governance. If you default to the Western perspective and point of view in framing every arguments, then you will never convince Chinese of the merits of Western governance system when they are not persuaded by the observed results, in Western society.

Those differences led China and the US to grow ever further apart Reason 1: There's no slaughter, loot and genocide against ethnic minorities in China, the 'I Can't Breathe' incident never happened in China. Reason 2: China does not allow 1% of the population to own more than 90% of the population's total wealth. Reason 3: China does not allow its people to die in mass shootings, let alone let school children get massacred by guns. Reason 4: China does not allow the drug problem to plague the country and kill more than 100,000 people every year. Reason 5: China has never invaded other countries or engaged in colonial expansion. Reason 6: China never interferes in the internal affairs of other countries, and never seeks and fosters agents abroad. Reason 7: China has never based its foreign policies on 'cheating, lying and stealing', unlike the US China sees such motto is shame, not pride. Reason 8: China has never sought to dominate the world, nor deprived any country (region) of its right of development. On the contrary, China shares development and prosperity with all trading partners. Reason 9: China will never do anything to weaken or eliminate an opponent in order to win. Instead, China is focused on bettering itself. Reason 10: China never fires missiles at wandering balloons, but heavily invests in better infrastructures so Chinese people can enjoy better life, safety and health.

There is never a doubt of George Yeo vast experience n knowledge on China and its historical extrapolation. But I have to disagree with his comment that US is the bedrock of ideas and designs n China is exceptionally prowess in manufacturing abilities. It is not true now, China has the most articles published on science and technology n patents over the last 5 years. A recent article from ASPI pronounced that China is ahead in 37 out of the 43 new technologies that would figure prominently in the Future.

These knowledgeable speakers will serve the cause of peace and better understanding between the US and China, in these dangerous times of sabre rattling: Jeffrey Sachs, an American diplomat/academic who tirelessly advocates diplomacy in conflict resolution. Pascal Coppers, a Belgian with deep knowledge of Chinese culture and doing business in China. Prof David Kang, a Korean American prof who can unravel many false assumptions about China. I'm sure there are many many more that your viewers can recommend. My underlying premises is that without China and the US coming together, humanity is doomed. Why? Technology developments like AI will be used for war rather than for peace. Any miscalculation based on mistrust could spiral into Armageddon in hours ending humanity. Existential threats like climate change will be neglected. I hope Dr Kang will pursue the professed mission of Asia Society courageously.

"In our society today there is not enough of the feminine instinct, to see each for what it is and to help that person to interact with another person for what he/she is. The Mother cares for all." Refreshing to hear this. Something I have thought about my whole adult life. The feminine is missing from American politics and political power structure and whenever it gets introduced, there is a huge backlash, not just against the feminine aspect as "weak,' but against women themselves. I hope I live long enough to see this change and all will be respected and sustained, whatever our gifts and talents.

This is the only point I disagree with. Corruption has nothing to do with Confucianism. Corruption has a greater relationship with human nature. For example, political donations are legal in the United States. It is tantamount to legalizing corruption. But the same goes for buying cups for $900 in the army and sheep for millions of dollars in Afghanistan, and the sheep are nowhere to be found. You can't say that the United States has something to do with Confucianism.

It's easy to build bridges that anyone can pass on or to not build any bridges. It's much harder and more important -- more helpful -- to build bridges that have ethical check points, based on mutual (international) agreement, for both parties that pass by. This ensures there is mutual respect, consistent, transparent and consultative relationships, not just with those who have the power to build bridges (or destroy them), yet also for the many people who pass over them and for whom are affected by the decisions of the powerful.

Are you so naive that you still believe that the US politicians care about anyone else other than their own political and economic interest? Look at how US politicians are supporting and funding Israel’s genocide on Palestineans, do you need further elaboration here? Secondly, US is a troublemaker everywhere they set foot on, including their very own soil which they conveniently robbed from the red indians. Capitalism (privately owned bus. and industries) cannot compete with industries and resources that are well managed by the central authority of a nation-state who have access to the collective contributions of their population. This is what capitalist have always understood, and now insert terms like "overcapacity" into the lexicon to divert from having to explain capitalisms failure to compete in the free market. It reminds me how they invented the term "whataboutism" to divert from having to justify brazenly hypocritical positions.

Minus the alleged Chinese government support (i believe most governments support their industries thru subsidies &/or tax holidays like the recent ?USD52B support to the microchip industry in the US?), how can Chinese merchants sell their products or services at a much cheaper rate compared to others?

:You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit...[will become a pile on the heap of history].* Therefore by their fruits you will know them."--Jesus Chris, the Palestinian Nazarene of Galilee Matthew 7:15-20😢😢 *Parenthetical expression.

Why is it that even the most educated of overseas born Chinese still can't appreciate the different governance systems they have grown up with?? Don't think any of them would freely give up the freedom they enjoy now. So why would they support it for the Chinese people under the cccp? Is it all about the economic power of cccp which is actually the power of the industrious Chinese people not the government of the elites.

George Yeo is promoting ideas that benefits or at least not harming his own country, namely Singapore. For the USA we don't really care about relationship with China. The rest of the West can also ignore China. But Singapore will be in a bad shape if China economy and trades with the west tank. He is speaking for Singapore. USA and the West rightfully have been ignoring him.

Wisdom is far above rubies! He/She who earnestly seeks Wisdom, obtains favour from The LORD! 🙏😇 The fear of The LORD is the beginning of wisdom! Knowledge dispels fear! 😇 He/She who has an understanding heart, is of a calm spirit! 😍. Be quick to listen, n slow to speak, for a slow answer turns away wrath, n a gentle tongue 👅 breaks a bone 🦴. However, unusually stupid arrogance simply stay stagnant, even be left behind in the 21st Century! 😵‍💫 Self-righteousness is sin!. Whoever harbours sin, shall not prosper! 😭. To many words, sin is not absent, n GOD hates the perverse tongue! 😱🥵 What is desired of man is Kindness! 🙏😍.

George is not correct . America and Europe letting China decimate the American and European industrial capacity is not very wise for the Americans and Europeans overall.America and Europe want to compete but just not now,at least in EV's.This is just natural. If so,let the Americans and Europeans raise tariff then, and if they lose long-term,so be it.

Dr. Kyung-wha Kang is really sharp on her feet! She quickly pointed out the curious contradictions of GY's assertion of CCP's collective leadership being a determinant of corruption. GY is a Taoist Roman Catholic. Is that possible? He is a Singaporean agent of influence for China. lol. His characterization of the Philippines' defence of her sovereignty as childish while at the same time asserting China's rightful use of arms against Taiwan & the Philippines is appalling.
