This does only work with an audience above a certain level of integrity. Unfortunately some people don't realise that they: clap off-beat, standing in the way, being a nuisance to others, .... Luckily I think those people who enjoy Tim Minchin are usually above that level :) Tim in general has a quite high standard when it comes to his lyrics, music, topics and jokes. That's why he's such an amazing artist.

What's the most impressive thing is that he's not had any formal training on the piano. He had a few lessons when he was a kid but is mostly self taught. He describes himself as a "hack pianist" which basically he admits not really knowing anything formally but just picking it up as he goes along. There's a lot of discussion in the music community whether he's actually any 'good' at piano, but I think he's absolutely incredible.

After some heavy cajoling from my colleague who happens to be a relative of his, he got on the piano and we all had a bit of a jam. People would just start singing jazz standards and the like and he would immediately start playing/singing and improvising on the pieces. I started in with some Moondance and he improved and scatted along and it was just fun as hell. Having been a fan of his for over a decade, it was definitely a wonderful moment for me.

I'm sure the performance grew based on what worked in shows. It's actually quite flexible. This is the kind of piece where you can swap parts in and out based on audience response.

Trying a new piece in a small venue actually has relatively low risk. Worst case scenario a few people walk out. But even the weirdest artists have people they can bounce their work off of before they perform it to the public, and you can tweak and change the material over multiple times performing it until it works for you and the audience
@maddieb.4282
@maddieb.4282 Жыл бұрын
By the way if you’re an artist that takes risks, there are going to be audiences that don’t like you. That’s fine, you’ll live and an audience finding you tedious will not ruin your career immediately 😁

I need to get back into playing piano, and I can tell you that many (if not most) people can’t just play by ear. To be able to play by ear takes having a musical propensity and then learning to use some kind of instrument (even learning to use one’s vocal chords) to get just a sense of the notes that you might hear.
