Me and a friend tried to get tickets to a Destroyer concert at the then Glassboro Sate College in NJ back in 1978. By the time we got there the show was sold out but we were determined to see George Thorogood that night so we decided to climb through an open window in the locker room of the Glassboro gymnasium. We jumped to the floor and to our surprise there was George, his brother, and the rest of the band sitting on the floor and locker room benches throwing down a ton of Miller High Life before the show!...George said, "Welcome to the warm-up party" as he handed us both a cold Miller. We sat and drank and bullshitted with those guys for an hour while the back-up bands performed. (It was some kind of Battle of the Bands Night). When the real show started George turned to us and said "You guys just hang with my brother and no one will bother you." We stood the entire show behind a curtain no more than ten feet from where George was performing! For a seventeen year old kid from Jersey, this was the definition of heaven! George and his brother were great guys. Very down to earth and very cool at the same time. I recall George kept saying how this was his last show before summer and wouldn't be performing again until September when softball season was over....I think he liked softball almost as much as Rock & Roll! ROCK ON GEORGE!!!!

Did anyone have more fun on stage than George Thorogood? A man that genuinely loves his craft.......and how many performers pay such homage to those that inspired them? GT brought Albert Collins on stage with him at his Live Aid performance of Madison Blues as well and that brought Albert Collins more attention that he would have ever received otherwise. Like his music or not, GT is a class act.

Many years ago, I went into my local bar in Toronto after work to find George Thorogood sitting at a table with Ronnie Hawkins! The only people in the bar were them, George's bodyguard and John the bartender. They invited me to have a beer with them! I was only about 18 yrs. old and so nervous! lol They immediately picked up on that and made me feel so comfortable by telling jokes and just being real true gentlemen! :) George and Ronnie were 2 amazingly talented men back then, and still are to this day! God Bless you both for making this world a better place! XO :) I still love your music to this day! :)

jo jo pink I saw George and the Stray cats at a bar in Palo Alto California back in 78 I think (I don't remember the name of the place). He was small time back then... I was 18 or 19 also but had a fake iD as many of us did back then. The place wasn't crowded but was rock'n! After the show I saw George at the bar and bought him a beer (as I vaguely recall it was "last call"). We chatted about him doing a party that I was having the next month and he seemed interested in the money. He gave me a number to call about arranging it, but I lost it. Wouldn't that have been cool!

One thing I've always enjoyed about a George show (seen him four times) is that it doesn't matter if he's playing for 100 or for 15,000, it always feels like a rockin' blues band playing in a dark, smokey bar.

on that note.... I'll never forget that around this time (early 80's), within a year I saw him both at a less-than-full ratskellar at Nassau Community College (Long Island) and headlining at Madison Square Garden. And if memory serves, at MSG while on top of an amplifier he slipped and came down hard on one leg, though hardly missing a beat and certainly finishing the show. A few nights later there was supposed to be a live broadcast from another east coast locale (Boston?), but they had to play a previously recorded gig due to illness/injury? Always wondered if there was a connection.

The Destroyers were always a great sounding live band. Every instrument sits perfectly in the mix. The Bass guitar is fat yet punchy, the sax rumbles & screams, George's guitar is full of mids with that cool boxy tone, his vocals are gritty and cut through the mix and the snare drum is deep yet still cracks. That snare sound is always a dead give away. When you hear it, you know it's the Destroyers. This band def deserved their name rather than just "George Thorogood's backing band". They were a big part of George's sound and a super tight band.

I fully agree with this. I am not aware about the current line up, how long playing together or if there were many changes but I saw them in concert last July and is true they are a "super tight" solid band and one of the ones who better understand why people go to a concert and give audience what they are looking for.

Growing up my dad use to play the hell out of George back in the 70's, 80's always liked his music, had a chance to go to one of his concerts, NOTHING LIKE IT "LIVE" TOOK HIM AND HIS MUSIC TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL, HIS ENERGY IS JUST CONTAGIOUS!!! In my 50's and have seen him a few more times since, and would show up tomorrow to see him again, THANKS GEORGE FOR ALL THE GREAT TIMES OVER THE YEARS!!!

Whenever I listen to rock music it always reminds me of my youth. I'm 62 years old and I was born on December 15, 1959 and I remember when I was in my 20s in the 80s me and my friends had a lot of fun. We grew up in a rural town called valley center. There was a mobile home park in valley center called minseund mobilehome park on lake wholford road thats where we grew up. There was a little canal near by that we called the flume but it's actually called the escondido canal. We used to ride it from place to place with innertubes. I remember there was also stagecoach trails near by that were covered in brush and we would hike them. I remember having a bunch of friends on the San Pasqual indian reservation. I remember breaking into a dam and we would just hang out there. That was back in the 70s when we were teenagers. In the 80s I was still living in valley center and I remember living at the oakvale mobilehome park in 1980 when I was 20 and buying a camper in 1984 when I was 24 and living on my friend's property. Then in 1987 when I was 27 I moved onto my friends property on the San Pasqual indian reservation. Then in 1992 when I was 32 I moved onto my other friend's property on the San Pasqual indian reservation. Then in 1998 when I was 38 I was arrested with my Then girlfriend for drug charges. Because back then I used to do speed which is methamphetamines. I started doing that shit in 1978 when I was 18. But when I went to jail I got clean from it. Thats my life story thank you for reading.

Anyway my two friends and I pushed our way to the front of the stage (I know what a weasel). I was slapping George on his boots and he was sweating all over the stage. Dude is awesome, Bad to the Bone tour. He said it was his birthday so no opening act and he rocked the house. Cheers George and thank you for rocking the place

You are a lucky SOB! He never has come here to Maine in concert as far as I know. Unless it was between 95 and 06!! I was living in Florida then with my ex. When we got married he was in the Navy, just home from deployment to Puerto Rico and back to Gulfport MS, his home base. He only had 5 months left when we got married. He was glad to get out and then when we moved to Florida for his job he joined the Army National Guard Reserves for four years, then switched to the regular Army Reserves for another four. They offered him a good bonus but he turned it down and got out altogether. Tired of playing war games I guess. Then a few years later he got tired of playing house with me and walked out on me and our two children. Just went to work and never came home one day. I had to find out that he was done with me on the phone!!! Every guy I've told the story to has called him a big, fat coward!!!!! Nineteen years with someone and you aren't supposed to just up and leave!!!! I put up with his shit for years, an affair after 12 years when the kids were little and I forgave even though when we first got married I told him if he ever cheated on me I would take everything and he'd end up with one set of clothes and a cardboard box to live in. He had to get married again to get by because his salary didn't cut it for my alimony/child support and all his bills. He's making mucho bucks now as a computer admin supervisor and on his third wife. Life can kick you in the ass sometimes and I wasted too much time crying tears over that asshole and now I'm too old to bother to find somebody else. I wish I'd been with you in 74 at that dive bar but I was still in high school then. Didn't graduate until 76!!!!!

When I was at the University of Delaware, George lived in the dorm right next to mine, although I had never heard of him. I was interested in the blues and rock-n-roll, and my friend who lived in the same dorm as George told me that a guy there had two LPs for sale, a Chuck Berry and a Little Richard, both from 1958. I went to the room number and knocked on the door, and there were 3 guys in the room, and they sold me the 2 LPs for $1 each !! Even then I thought that that was a fabulous bargain: I would have gladly paid $5 each. I reckon that Thorogood might have been one of the 3 guys.
