Yes, Red Tails are the generalist amongst hawks. They will eat things as small as mice and as large as a house cat. The size of the prey depends a lot on the gender of the hawk. Males are the smaller of the species and tend to stick with smaller prey. Females onb the othe hand can get quite large and will tackle things as large as a housecat, Jackrabbit, or large snake. I have seen photos of a female taking down pheasant.

It’s not sad at all!! It is a wild animal protecting its environment from an invasive species. Domestic house cats are invasive and kill a billion birds and small mammals every year. Good on that hawk!! I hope it gets the whole litter and mom and dad… This is a stupid Human problem and Red Tails are helping the cause! Euthanize outdoor cats!!

Their number one preferred prey is RODENT.
