+Karen 75 Okay, that makes sense...and that's kind of what kills me about Raoul re-entering Christine's life. She and Erik could have had something good, built over time...but nooo. Ugh...and Raoul didn't listen to Christine when she told him "things have changed!" Ugh..gimme Erik any day. At least Erik's got something of a right to be somewhat arrogant in his own way. He's a musician for pete's sake. A genius musician, for that matter...and geniuses tend to know what the heck they're doing with their craft. Raoul's only arrogant 'cause of his money. So not impressive to me. At ALL. :p

In my opinion, I would've chose the Phantom. He might've been mean, but that's what the world was to him. As he said in the movie "the world showed no compassion to me". He only wanted someone to love him, or at least someone to not be afraid of him. This song shows a whole different side of him, that was barely in the movie. If only it was in the movie, at the ending of the credits.

I prefer the Phantom. I really feel with him in the movie. Seeing him crying made me tear up too and I wish he got what he deserves, a better life. Even while I read the book I became emotional. But did you hear about this second movie? It's called "Love never dies". The actors are totally different and my favorite will always be the version fromm 2004 but the 2nd movie isn't bad.

No one would listen No one but her Heard as the outcast hears. Shamed into solitude Shunned by the multitude I learned to listen In my dark, my heart heard music. I longed to teach the world Rise up and reach the world No one would listen I alone could hear the music Then at last, a voice in the gloom Seemed to cry "I hear you; I hear your fears, Your torment and your tears." She saw my loneliness Shared in my emptiness No one would listen No one but her Heard as the outcast hears No one would listen No one but her Heard as the outcast hears.

I guess they wanted to keep the "Erik's The Evil Guy". Personally, I think he's just an abused, ostracized HUMAN that makes the wrong decisions because he doesn't KNOW that they are wrong. He did say, "All I want is to be loved for myself." He hasn't known love, and wasn't taught the difference between right and wrong.
@cosettekuchnicki94388 жыл бұрын
JuicyMooshrooms He was abandoned by his mother, got made fun of in a cage, and lived inside of a cave underneath a opera for 20+ years.
@ValkyrieDaisy957 жыл бұрын
Yeah I totally agree!! His childhood made him hateful because of all the fear and humiliation he had. The way people treated him and acted in front of him just tore his soul apart. His mother hated him and that obviously cut his heart in two. So he cut himself off from everyone, and the fact no-one would listen to him even when he wanted the littlest thing, and that brought back the memories of his childhood of no-one listening to him when he'd cry in pain. All he wanted was love and a loving woman like Christine couldn't even give him that properly. She kissed him and just left. I mean, the poor man. If I was Christine, I would have stayed with him. Raoul can get anyone really. He's the perfect man with the perfect life.. but Erik.. he needs guidance and support and affection in his life, for once. He needs love. He hasn't had it before. Even though he's fictional, I want to look after him so bad. He really just needs acceptance. He thinks he's an outcast, but he isn't. Just people treat him like shit basically. People are just mean to him. He's just unique and just needs to be understood. :( He's just so tormented and broken.

This song/scene is the perfect way to emphasize the key metaphor of the story. Christine represents everyone; innocent in early life, maturing as the dark side of life is gradually exposed to her, realizing there is both light and dark within herself - represented by Raoul and Erik/Phantom, and finally having to choose which aspects of herself to embrace. With each choice, there's sacrifice. With the Phantom, she'd have to hide from those who would judge and hunt her along with him, but she'd never have to wear that proverbial mask in public to hide parts of who she is. By choosing Raoul, she makes the same choice most of us do; she chooses to wear the mask and keep up appearances, choosing shelter and security but also burying parts of her very soul for life.
@joelmaqueira48519 жыл бұрын
That's a very interesting way to see it. Especially the part about her denial of Erik being a denial of a part of herself and donning an emotional mask as if to put on a show for the public.
@DoranGale9 жыл бұрын
joel maqueira Think about some of the other hints at such a subtext: "Angel or father, friend or Phantom... Angel, oh speak, what endless longings echo in this whisper," could arguably be declaring not only a longing for her lost father, but that voice in the darkness (the voice within) that inadvertently draws out her darker side; sensuality, anger, deception, etc. Though it didn't make the movie, in the title song of the musical, there's this verse: Phantom "In all your fantasies, you always knew, that man and mystery..." Christine "Were both in you..." Finally, in Christine's plea to Raoul before exposing Erik: "He'll always be there singing songs in my head." Seems to me to hint at the proverbial angel on one shoulder and devil on the other conscience battle. Either way you choose, the other will always be there in your head, whispering desires you've chosen to leave unfulfilled.
@joelmaqueira48519 жыл бұрын
I never noticed those lyrics from the title song until you pointed them out and caught them in the 25th anniversary show after watching it again (AWESOME SHOW!). I wonder why they didn't use them in the movie..
@DoranGale9 жыл бұрын
joel maqueira My guess would be it had to do with the youth of the cast, since one more line wouldn't have messed with the timing much at all. It said in the DVD extras that they decided to exaggerate Christine's naivete and innocence by making her very young, which meant making Raoul and Erik younger than canon, but the condition of that choice was that all the actors would have to actually sing their parts. Only Minnie Driver (Carlotta) didn't really sing hers, but that worked for the character anyway. Emmy Rossum, however, was only sixteen when filming began. True fans of the story probably wouldn't have been bothered by it, but some viewers might have been put off by too much sensuality between a teenage girl and a significantly older man. My guess is they decided the "Point of No Return" scene was enough; playing it safe.
@joelmaqueira48519 жыл бұрын
Probably, but theres loads of sensuality all throughout the film. "Point Of No Return" Especially. The look on Raoul's face in that scene is priceless!

I honestly don't know how I feel about this being a deleted scene. In a sense, it gives us a bit more insight on Eric's sensitive side to his love for Christine. Without this scene, you're left with more obsession, hostility, & control. This scene, in a way, provides the character with a more humanistic side. As for the music, in terms of how well it fits in with the rest of the film, it WORKS....& then it DOESNT WORK. It's strange. This would've set you up for the end credits. But, maybe that's the point. Maybe they just didn't wanna give too much away. Perhaps they wanted the end credit's music to stick out from the rest of the film.

This song really shows who the Phantom really is. Although, I understand why this isn't included in the film (because it's not in the stage production and I feel like they were trying to stay true to the production). It shows how much of part Christine plays in his life. (Even in the short time he knew her) She's his escape from his never-ending loneliness and he brings beauty into his life that he's never known before. He's just a child stuck in a grown man's body (Seeing as never had the chance to have a childhood because he was shunned for looking different) Christine saw past his facial disformity (Love Never Dies). I think he fell in love with the idea of her(and her voice) without truly knowing her, that's why he got hurt. The Phantom will always be my favorite character and I could probably write a ten page essay why he is such an important, misunderstood character.

You know, I think even without this song in the movie Christine and Erik's love is beautiful. He thought that no one would ever love him because of his face, but even though Christine chose Raul, she still had stronger feelings for Erik in my opinion. When she kissed him it did not at all seem forced. I mean Raul just watched her sing and was like BOOM BITCH YOURE HOT!!!!!! But Christine and Erik had known each other for years, decades, and their love was a lot more developed. And when he let her go for Raul, that was the best part of the movie in my opinion, not because she broke his heart but because he gave Christine her freedom because he loved her so much. Yeah she went to be with Raul (stupid Raul) but Erik could see she loved him and he loved Christine, and wanted her to be happy and do what she wanted. I think that's better than forcing her to love him to save Raul. Also #Crantom 😤
@MrSass-yb7dm8 жыл бұрын
I think one of the biggest reasons she didn't stay with Erik is because he killed people. I fully understand that they had good connection. But he seemed to be too manipulative. I would love to see a version of the play when they stay together.

"Lel the Phantom was a monster tho. If he wasn't hot you wouldn't care" actually, Erik isn't a monster. He was hated by his mother and shunned by the world, used as a sideshow freak by gypsies, when performing in Russia no one cared about his magic or music and just wanted to see his face. He forced to torture and kill people for the pleasure of the King of Persia and the Khanum. Years of solitude and loneliness would tend to drive someone a little nuts. augginator123 The song shows more of the Phantoms pain and what the real him is like. Not the angry, in love him but the caring, sad and lonely him. If you have seen Love Never Dies (the sequel) you will see how this song fits in more . I personally think the song fiys perfectly but thats just me

This song should go after Christine leaves because when she left, he realized he was a bad person and made a mistake. He also realized that if he didn't do half the stuff he did then she might have realized that she loved the phantom more which would make this song perfect in my opinion

So many people hate this movie because they prefer Michael Crawford or the 25th version. I personally adore this version, but it might also be because this was the first POTO adaption I was ever introduced to. I know that this movie isn't perfect, it definitely has it's flaws, but all movies do. I think they definitely could've done a better job with the deformity, but some people hate the movie because they made Erik too pretty in this. However, when you really think about it, they made Michael Crawford too pretty for the roll. In Gaston's novel, all of Erik's face was deformed. I understand that for the broadway musical they needed to develop a half mask so that the Phantom actors could preform better, and so the audience could see his expressions, but it shocks me that out of all the different POTO adaptions, people choose to bitch at this one. POTO 2004 haters, even the original broadway version ain't perfect. Gerard still did a great job with singing and acting. A lot of people hate his singing, but I rather liked it! Okay, I freaking loved it. I like it because it's deeper and more powerful. He can alternate between singing very softly and calmly, to suddenly having a booming voice; something that I think all Phantoms should have. Even though he wasn't really experienced with singing, he did a hell of a lot better than what I would've done! If I sang, people's ears would be bleeding. Well I think I did enough ranting and reviewing. Thank you for uploading this video! I like to watch HD quality videos, so I appreciate that you were considerate and did this for all of us Phans! If only they had left this scene in the movie. *Sighs* Oh well. . .
@InvaderAdrianna9 жыл бұрын
NightDreamer37 I'd have to agree with you. The 2004 movie is also the first adaptaion I came across; likely why it is my favorite. All movies do have their flaws; and the youtube channel CinemaSins points out the flaws. Yeah; the deformity isn't perfect, based on the book; Gaston Leroux claimed that Erik may have been a real man. Hence if that is the case; he may have went overboard on Erik's deformity. I can understand the need for the half mask for the Phantom actors on the stage. I am also just as confused as to why people are so against this verison; instead of the other film or musical adaptations. No; the original broadway wasn't perfect... There's no such thing as perfect. Gerard had done an amazing job for being an untrained singer before he was casted as Erik. His voice has a beautiful quality to it; that if he were a professional singer I think he would have been truly incredible. You can hear the raw talent and emotion to his voice. I may not be in the same boat as you when it comes to singing; the reason I side with Gerard's raw singing talent because I have the same raw untrained talent as he does. (Unless you count a few years of choir class from school; I am pretty much untrained; probably with less training than him; depending on one's personal opinion). I also know a few people that just should not sing... I've heard them; gah it was awful!
@NightDreamer379 жыл бұрын
Nadja Weidmann-Schwarz I also like how raw Gerard's voice is as well, and I think that it would also sound amazing if he were a professional singer as well, but I think it came out perfectly for his roll as the Phantom. I also agree that there probably would never be a perfect POTO movie/TV show. Quite a handful of stuck up Phans like to act like they're better than the other Phans for not watching the 2004 version, and act like those who enjoy this version are "amateur Phans" which is just ridiculous - it's quite childish in my own opinion. There's nothing wrong with enjoying this film. It's beautiful, it still tells the POTO storyline, and has some great singing and acting - what's to hate? But there's always going to be people who hate it. Some of the movies/shows or even video games that I enjoy the most, get some of the worst feedback. I WOULD say that opinions are like noses, and that everyone has one, but that would be a lie especially considering that Erik didn't have one. . .*Awkward silence*
@InvaderAdrianna9 жыл бұрын
NightDreamer37 Agreed; he was the best choice for the role. It gets annoying when the stuck up Phans think they are better than us; because they haven't seen the most recent Phantom film. *rolls eyes* Yes; because we are amateurs for preferring the 2004 film, it is childish that people think that. I agree; there are some things I like; that other people hate; besides the 2004 film. Poor Erik... He doesn't have a nose in the book..
@NightDreamer379 жыл бұрын
Nadja Weidmann-Schwarz I know, poor Erik! But we all still love him. And it's funny how some Phans are super nice and look at all of us almost like a big happy family, but yet there are those rude ones that you would NOT want to hang out with because they would be a snob and call us amateurs. *Shakes head* Those rude Phans just like to feel superior.
@InvaderAdrianna9 жыл бұрын
NightDreamer37 Now how could we hate him? All he wanted was someone to love him. ^_^ Yeah; I'd sooner hang out with those super nice Phans that consider us family; rather than the ones who like to feel superior.

Hmmm I had an interesting thought of how Erik felt here Just imagine living your whole life shunned and hated and unloved and not only that he was also alone most of the time especially after coming to live in the Opera Garnier he lived beneath layers and layers of the building where no one would know or hear or see him ever and to top that up his mother who gave birth to him hated him to bits and when she wanted to warm up to him just a little he left home thinking she hated him then he ended up with the gypsies who owned a circus who treated him like a animal and a freak and he almost got raped by a pedophile when he ran away from there and gets found by a guy who says he can stay at his house if he worked for him so he does but his daughter comes and ends up getting interested in Erik and tries to take away his mask but ends up slipping an falling off the roof which makes he die so Erik leaves the house and thats when he went to Persia and gets found by a Persian guy because he gets interested in Eriks magic tricks but the Persian took him to the Persian king who loved to see ppl cry thus forcing Erik to kill ppl and torture them for him but when he finds out that Erik doesn't obey him he orders to kill him but Erik escapes that too thanks to the Persian who was the only friend ish for Erik then he goes back to Paris and ends up in the Opera house because of certain reasons (he built it with Charles Garnier) lol then falls in love with Christine why? Because she was alone and had nobody too like him or thats what he thought and then you know the rest of the story D: so no wonder he is like that

I love Gerard's voice! For me, he was the best Phantom. For those who do not agree with me, please explain why. Edit: After years, i finally understand what I prefer Gerard's Phantom. His portrayal actually indicates the Phantom's a certain confidence and security. The way that Gerard didn't scream when Christine unmasked him but only gritted his teeth because of the betrayal. And they stared at each other before even caring about the people beholding them. And the fact that Gerard's Phantom trusted Christine enough to touch his face but not to unmasm him during the Damn You scene. It seems to me that Gerard's Phantom is actually secure in the way that he looks and especially in his skills in music, but is frustrated in the way the people treat him unjustly. Ramin's Phantom is extremely insecure. He hypnotizes Christine but is fearful of her so he controls the way he hand moves, avoiding his face. Another, in Past the Point of No Return, he not only comes in extremely covered, but screams when he is unmasked because of what the audience is seeing. Gerard comes in full costume, everyone knows that is the Phantom being vulnerable and easy to apprehend at that moment, but they pause because of the song. Furthermore, again with only his teeth gritting, he's onlt betrayed but not insecure. The inclusion of this song to Gerard's Phantom's repertoire really tells me that it's just that the audience doesn't want to listen to him that's the issue, not his grotesque features. Gerard's Phantom: asking for Christine's consent Ramin's Phantom: fearfully being dependent on Christine Sorry, my bias is still Gerard. He performed a wonderful Phantom. Ramin did a brilliant job portraying a needy incel however, which technically is what the Phantom should be in the first place. But I do love Gerard's interpretation

I understand the side of not wanting to include this scene to add to his power and harshness, but at the same time I wish they would have included this because it really does add that contrast. I still think he would appear just as powerful, if not more powerful because we see his true ability to control others all while being soft and sensitive underneath. Or if it wouldn't have been IN the movie, they could have tacked it at the end or roll some credits then play this clip, then continue credits.

Gerald Butler will always be the phantom in my eyes. It was the first film I ever saw him in and that voice so innocent yet brutal. The tortured expression,the incredible rage and just his whole physique. He was love at first sight for me and he was Scottish. I love strong Scottish men especially those who can act an sing well. Maybe he was not an experienced operatic vocalist but he made the phantom an icon for the film industry. He is still such a dream.

What I found really amazing in this scene would be how the ones behind this movie portrayed the Phantom's genius: Christine's sketches, his appreciation for art and beauty despite his darkness. Despite all of these, we can't deny the fact that what he does is beautiful. It gave us a glimpse of the reasons why Madame Giry and Meg became obsessed with him and his art.

This song should have been left in the movie; in the credits, you can hear the melody of Minnie Driver's song "Learn to Be Lonely", which has the same melody as this song. They really should have left this in because it's a beautiful wrap-up of the movie and how he ended up alone in his own cave.

If by original version you mean the stage version, pretty much every fan of the musical hates the film as a whole (mostly the casting, Butler and Rossum in particular, and the modifications done to the story), not just this scene. I've always heard that was cut because interrupted the pace of the film or something like that. I think that humanizes the phantom too much. He's supposed to be a creepy desfigurated psycho who stalks Christine. After seeing this, you want to hug him, give him a blanket and a bowl of soup. Not the expected reaction to the dreaded Phantom of the Opera. Unless you have a kink with Beauty and the Beast like stories or/and you have read Susan Kay's Phantom, of course.
@randomgirll31239 жыл бұрын
aupairnovata This would humanize him perfectly. If you've ever read the book that Phantom was based off from you'd get what I mean. The Phantom's name is Erik. He has a name. He is this "being" but he's also human. That's the point.
@aupairnovata9 жыл бұрын
Kayla Conklin “Poor, unhappy Erik! Shall we pity him? Shall we curse him? He asked only to be 'some one,' like everybody else. But he was too ugly! And he had to hide his genius or use it to play tricks with, when, with an ordinary face, he would have been one of the most distinguished of mankind! He had a heart that could have held the entire empire of the world; and, in the end, he had to content himself with a cellar. Ah, yes, we must need pity the Opera ghost...” I'm a hardcore fan of the tale (or urban legend or whatever it is) and I've read the books, I know he's Erik. Most people hasn't read any of the books and don't know, though. I still think this humanizes him too much, and that's not the point of the film. It's a retelling of the tale using the musical score, with just the same depth. You're not supposed to understand him or to think him human, just to pity him at the end.

I personally think it's a good thing that they didn't use this scene - not because I don't enjoy it, but because if you start to sympathize for the Phantom even more, it might create more negative feelings towards Christine for not choosing him, you know? Maybe I'm wrong, but it's just a thought.
@BrittanyRoseWright10 жыл бұрын
You're right about that. I wish somehow they could use this scene and for those who watch this movie could understand that the Phantom has a sensitive side. But then again, it's like you said that they would feel like Christine chose Raoul over the Phantom. Even though it's a deleted for The Phantom of the Opera fans to enjoy. Which, I do enjoy it and understand how he feels in this song. But, yes you are right about that. It is a good thing they didn't use this scene. But, again I feel bad they didn't. Well, they made their choice. And it would definitely create a lot of negative feelings and thoughts towards Christine for sure.

I don't understand why so many people hate this song. Is it because it was put in the movie and people just point it out as another reason to hate the film? Or because it was sang by Gerard Butler? Honestly, I see a much more vulnerable Erik, which if you have read the book, you would be able to see where I am coming from. He may have been a lunatic, disfigured, and a murderer, but he was greater than any genius. He had so many plans and wanted nothing more than to share his creations and music to the world. Had Erik not been disfigured, he would have been the most amazing person to everyone who witnessed his genius. So he just casted out everyone in the world ( including himself ) as evil, but of course he wanted to give people his splendor. Christine of course, hypnotized by his voice and amazed at his abilities, followed him and listened to him. She was willing to be his student and to show him praise. I feel bad that Christine left him, even though he begged her to love him. All he ever wanted was love, but he is just as guilty as her. I would be scared to if a man murdered people around me, through tantrums very quickly, and tried to force me to marry him. You can't get mad at Christine for those reasons, and Erik wanted her to be happy because that is how much he loved her. It is a sad ending, but it ends with true love. That got off track......but you get my point. ;D~

I love the melodic connection to love never dies in the bridge of this song. “I hear your fears, Your torment and your tears” with “if you’d have known the pain I’ve known, then you would know I had no choice.”

One part I liked about the movie; it actually let you feel bad for the Phantom. Sure there's the All I Ask of You reprise, but that seems more jealousy than anything. This shows legitimate loneliness... and it's heartbreaking but beautiful...

I so wish this hadn't been deleted from the film. It's such a beautiful, heartwrenching scene and it makes me cry every time I watch it. This is my absolute favorite movie of all time. And now I must go cry some more.

This is why I love this movie, the phantom at the start almost is like a ghost, supernatural. But towards the end he becomes really human.

I cry buckets every time I listen to this. I can relate to the phantom in so many ways. This describes my life.

same here thing..... i try not to cry, but the tears come anyway..... i too can relate, very sad childhood, and i lost my best friend, my older sister, to suicide.... she was the love of my life and i miss her sooooo much.... i'm 51, and still feel that pain..... the most tortured souls, seem to be, the most empathetic.....

OMG...this is the first time I have heard this set of lyrics to this particular melody...and I am in tears...made me want to reach through the screen and touch him...I have to go back and watch the 2004 movie again now. This set of lyrics explains precisely why I am such a Phantom freak all these years...since high school, actually...
