Gerard Houlier joined Liverpool as joint manager in July 1998. The Frenchman was working alongside Roy Evans but it didn't last long as Evans left the club a few months later.

@@sagaradhikari7906 overrated may be a bit strong. Hes a Liverpool legend. The truth is though that he wasn't on the same level as players like ferdinand, stam, van dijk, vidic, terry, carvalho, Adams, Campbell or kompany but that doesn't mean that he wasn't a top class player. The defence wasn't exactly the problem under houllier or rafa. Players like smicer, berger, riera, kewell, diouf, cisse, baros etc were the issue. Whilst united had giggs and beckham/ronaldo, Chelsea had robben and duff etc and arsenal had Pires and llungberg or parlour playing off Henry and Bergkamp. we lacked quality in the final third. Either we had world class strikers like Owen or torres being fed by injury prone or sub standard players or (as happened too often towards the end of rafas reign) we were forced to play ngog or veronin or baros up front with Sissoko or kuijt or maxi Rodriguez or benayoun out wide. Some of the players we had in those positions were capable squad players (kuijt/benayoun/garcia) but none of them were world class or good enough to push us towards a title when we were competing against some of the very best teams in Europe. Kewell was the closest thing to a world class winger in the 00's but his legs were made out of bolsa wood and glue. Carragher never cost us the title and was worth his weight in gold for the club due to the way he conducted himself both on and off the pitch. Had he and big sami marshalled our back line under Evans instead of players like ruddock and babb we'd have won a league title under uncle Roy. If only Evans had managed to sign Thuram lol. Likewise if mcmanaman stuck around under houlier and he hadn't spunked a load of money on salif diao, diouf and cheyrou then we could have closed that gap to united and arsenal and nicked a title or two during his reign. If's, buts and maybes aside though this man kept the club relevant at a time when the teams around us had some of the very best players in the world. Ferdinand, radibe, bowyer (people forget how could he was for leeds), kewell and viduka were top top class players and united and arsenal were genuinely two of the best 5 teams in the world during the early 00's. He did a top job at a tough time and ill always be indebted to him and carragher for the memories they gave me in the 00's. 2001 was a special year to be a Liverpool fan. Rip Gérard YNWA
