Geri is amazing. When we were music students at Howard, we all knew she was in a league of her own - one that we would never attain to in this lifetime. She was much brighter than most of our professors. Makes me proud to have been blessed to hang out with her.

One of my favorite piano solos. A truly phenomenal approach rhythmically and an unstoppable force. Reminds me of McCoy Tyner's wonderful approach to soloing.

Hi Geri, from your 'ol Howard U classmate Vanessa. You were the bomb then and like fine wine, you've only gotten better. I'll never forget the day we were all in class jabbering away waiting for the instructor to come and you decided to go to the piano and try out a few chords in privacy while we were jabbering. You played, and time stood still. We were all pulled in and just flat out shut up because you simply mesmerized us. You have made the class of 1979 proud Geri. We love you. Peace.

I think I've been watching this since it was uploaded in the early days of KZfaq. It remains a favourite. Great pianist/composer really at one with her instrument, with a brilliant rhythm section.

A Tour D' Force performance! Mulgrew Miller, Kenny Kirkland and Geri Allen were the best pianists of the modern jazz era. Sadly, they all have left us. Rest in Power

Geri Allen was a hugely impressive pianist - I saw her live in London (the Royal Festival Hall I think). I would say influences included McCoy Tyner and Cecil Taylor. She was a heavyweight (I'm not referring to her actual weight of course!) along with Jarrett, Tyner, John Taylor - and... well, actually I'm struggling to think of anyone else who could be put on this list. Art Tatum had stunning technique, Bill Evans was so lyrical, Hiromi Uehara is very flamboyant, Lyle Mays plays great phrases; Brad Mehldau, perhaps? (Although I'm not convinced). There are quite a few great pianists around at the moment - Josh Nelson, Shai Maestro, Nikki Iles, Laurence Hobgood, Patrice Rushen, for example - but to me Geri Allen had a depth which seems unparalleled by any contemporary jazz pianist, man or woman. Sadly, one of the truly great improvising musicians of our time is no longer with us.
