(8 Jun 2014) World War II veterans joined soldiers and others at a German war cemetery in Normandy on Sunday to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
They were addressed by German Ambassador to France Susanne Wasum-Rainer, who paid tribute to all those who died during the war.
"It's hard to imagine that 70 years ago, in this peaceful, magnificent landscape, deadly battles raged," she said.
Sat side by side at the ceremony were two former adversaries, brought together to remember fallen friends.
Adriaan De winter, who fought for the Dutch resistance held hands with German veteran Kurt Keller.
They said they were happy their two nations could live side by side in peace.
"I would like to say that it was right, it was just for us to lose the battle of Normandy and to lose this war," said Keller.
D-Day was a turning point in World War II, cracking Hitler's western front as the Soviet troops made advances in the east.
