After weeks of heavy rain, many communities in Germany are struggling with rising floodwaters and bulging riverbanks. The state of Lower Saxony has been particularly hard hit. Emergency services are working together with members of Germany's Armed Forces and aid organizations. Meteorologists say that as much as 60 millimeters of rain per square meter could fall in the coming days. Which means that it's still too early to give the all-clear yet.

Some people are joking around here, but this isn't a joke. My family lives not far away from a spring in that area. In normal times, it has 20cm depth and is 2 meters wide. Before New Year, this stream has expanded into the fields and flooded all there. You may think - just fields? Yep, just fields for the time being. The problem is... The base of the spring was over 1.5 deep from the fields. And the spring is over 30 kilometres away from the main river(Weser)

@@MrToradragon I haven't been there jet because it was busy during the holidays. It only runs when absolutely necessary... And it still does it's very important job. Just like the old windmills that are also running to pump the water out... And all the modern engineered water works and water overflow areas (we flood appointed pieces of the land to prevent the water to rise to high.. .and let it move more slowly, to retain more in the ground for when it is very dry) it's a spectacular puzzle of old, new, nature and engineering that's keeping us reasonably dry these last few weeks...

2023 was the wettest year in history with recordbreaking rain in december, so things like this were bound to happen. 800 people possibly evacuated sounds like a rural floodplain though. Don't forget: That isn't necessarily a problem. Sometimes the point of those is specifically to flood. Better there than flooding a busy city.

We don't really have many floodplains in Germany as for example the US have.
@nvelsen1975
@nvelsen1975 7 ай бұрын
@@Esablaka Well, technically every valley is one, so they're just smaller. And Germany's northwest is a plain. But the main takeaway is: This flooding is not always a bad thing on a higher level. This place floods, another place doesn't flood. The Dutch had to create that artificially after 1995 and 1998 because they had blocked off everything because of the farmers' lobby. The program was called 'ruimte voor de rivier', 'space for the river' and it cost billions. Apparently Germany still has originally what we had to build for billions. Good on Germany, resist the temptation to dyke in everything. 😃

I'm not sure you are joking around, but what you are saying actually adds to the seriousness. In summer, dry banks due to the warmer climate, winter rain(instead of snow) due to the warmer climate. So yes, those two things don't mean they contradict.
