German Fernandez, Fastest 3200 in High School History

On May 31st 2008, at the California High School State Track Championships, German Fernandez set a new 3200m National High School Record of 8:34.23, 2 1/2 hours after breaking the California state record in the 1600m (4 minutes) and one day after running 4:11 in his qualifying heat. Even with all these runs he was still 24 seconds ahead of 2nd place in the 3200 against runners who were completely fresh and are some of the very best in the nation.
I've done such a double and I can tell you that once your wind is knocked out of you from the mile and your legs have been deadened and are not functioning at full capacity, it is extremely hard to come back and run a great 3200. His run is so incredible for a high school runner that it is just about too good to be true.
Basically, I'm extremely suspicious. High school runners are not tested for steroids.

I take records like this seriously and I am asking the national high school federation to test him for steroids to make sure this run was legitimate.
Every single one of those top 5 runners would have been in the 8:30 category had they gone on steroids.
I'm not here to take anything away from Fernandez, I just want to keep the sport clean.

Usually if you aren't *really* putting 100% into something, then you should recover fairly quick. But I'm not him, so I couldn't spell if he was putting all his might into the 1600m just to put it all in the 3200m or what it was exactly.

I was at this race and watched German do this. He ran the 1600 a couple of hours prior to this in 4:00.29. Problem was he was cramping badly during the cool down. I thought he would scratch the 3200 but he walked out on the track and lined up with everyone else. I think the old 3200 record was about 8:37 and he brought it down to 8:34. He signed with Oklahoma State.

Ended up running like 13:25 in the 5k, but never became a world-class athlete (by world-class I mean Olympian) in anything middle-long distance. Only one who does distance, esp track and xc both, can truly understand the magnitude of what that Fernandez just did....unbelievable....unbelievable! That's what you call hard work and God given talent. Hats off to this fine gentleman. I know how hard it is for me to run 10 min flat, let alone a 430 mile, but he did it in 4:00..then on the same day ran an 834 2-mile....absolutely incredible. this vid deserves millions of views...

Demetrius, this is very true...to me the most impressive T&F events are the Distance races and the High Jump. I was a sprinter in HS and was always amazed with the endurance of the distance guys, their workouts were just brutal. They would always laugh at us for our 'pathetic' training. I was also always impressed with the elite High Jumpers. I would stand there by the Pit watching these guys thinking EVERY TIME, it's impossible to jump that bar at 7', and these guys would just sail over it...A full FOOT OVER MY HEAD. It just didn't seem possible.

I met German's cousin Ivan Fernandez, a Marine going to school at 29 Palms, CA. When I first saw him I thought he looked a lot like German, then I saw his nametag on his uniform and had to ask. Yep! He was his cousin. Foot Locker was coming up that weekend down at Balboa Park so I drove him down to watch the race. German was very entertained by his "Marine Corp haircut"! German didn't win but did well. California runners have to run an extra race to get to the Foot Locker. The NE, South, and Mid-West top 10 finishers get a week off before the Championship race. Not California. They are so big it takes an additional race to get to the State Championships, then comes the FL West race to make the top 10. And we've actually had some runners, like Annie St Geme, who have doubled and ran both the Nike Cross-Nationals and the Foot Locker in the same season. When they are all done they sit back and say wow, I've run a championship race every weekend for well over a month!

His talent was off the charts. He was a multiple sport athlete at Riverbank who didn't focus on running until his Junior year in high school. Look up his efforts from his freshman and sophomore year when he was barely training and you should realize just how much talent the young man had. He ran some amazing workouts his senior year (ex 5 x 1 mile repeats with only one minute rest between each one starting at 4:40 and getting progressively faster with each one). Unfortunately he was hampered by injuries after his freshman year in college at Oklahoma State. One of the greatest high school middle distance runner in US history.

Back in the late 2010's, there was a track forum called dyestat which was the go to for high school running. (I think it was mostly east coast, but the news covered the whole usa). I remember nonstop refreshing the forum pages to see new comments on what Germans time was going to be. If I remember correctly, this 1-3 year span had crazy battles with German, Chris Derrick, Mike Fout, Robbie Andrews, etc. It was also the beginning of FAY-Mans girls cross country dynasty. Who still to this day since 08 has more national championships then every other school in the USA combined. Good times

This was something special, though in my memory I can't say all too surprising. When I was in high school and ran track, I always found running a second race always seemed to go better than the first. You get a lot of butterflies out of the way running that first race. All the anticipation goes into it, so by the time you get to that second race, provided you have enough recovery time, you're in a different mental state. You're more relaxed and that's when special things can happen. I've seen it with other runners, too.

That's impressive and beautiful to watch. At my high school from 1976-1979 we had to run 3km road run every day. Myself and another student always battled out the lead and would be ahead of the others by minutes. The winter temperatures were around minus 2 to minus 6 and we ran each day bare foot for 4 years. First on the road and that was ok, but to finish it was around three hundred metres on thick icy grass and that hurt for the next hour until our feet thawed out. We didn't dare complain or make anything of it because we didn't want to draw attention to ourselves and the shame of not being able to afford joggers to run in. We never got a time for our run and for some strange reason we never asked. I just join an athletics group recently and hope later this year to run a sub five 1500m.

3200 is 3.7 seconds short of 2-miles, so Fernandez 2-mile time would have been 8:37.9. I don't know what the national record was in 2008, but in 1972 it was 8:40.0. So... not much of an improvement, considering all the advancements in running over those 36 years. No matter, because in 2011 Lucas Verzbicas from Illinois ran 8:29.46.

German Fernandez has a lot more potential then that! Picture that he ran a the 1600m in 4:00 flat then to hours later 8:34 3200m in national record time. Picture if he had some competition in the 1600m or 3200m. German cruzzed the 1600m and 3200m. If he had to run just the 1600m I would see a 3:56 no problem. If he had to run the two mile in pro level competition like Lukas Verzbicas did to get the new national record of 8:29. I am sure German Fernandez would have run 8:25. Five Star ***** Performance!!

Nice times for high school, unfortunately this is a great case study for why many runner burnout going into college. Therefore they never reach their potential doubling and tripling events in high school and college. I believe that one of the problems with distance runners in the United States. I have been there and have many friends who have burned out after college.

Fernandez has amazing raw talent. FYI, steroids don't help distance runners. They use EPO if anything, steroids would just give them extra muscle that would probably slow them down. If you want proof of him being clean, he won the NCAA 1500 men's title as a Freshman leading the whole race. He just gets injured very easily, which is why he's out of the spotlight right now.

I honestly didn't know people could run a 2 mile that fast. I couldn't even maintain a 5 minute pace for one mile. much less two. my run time is in the 13s, im trying to get into the 12 minute range.

Rich Kimball also did it with only 60minutes in between! At 1st he ran 8:46.6 for 2 miles & then ran 4:06.6. Fernandez' converted time to the mile would be around 4:02 flat, while his converted 2 mile time would be around 8:37.5. Timewise, Fernandez' performance is superior, but the time difference when converted is only 4 seconds in the mile & 9 seconds for the 2 mile. Because Fernandez had 90 more minutes of rest, Kimball's 1974 performance may indeed be superior or no less than the same.

needed to keep the pace with Fernandez. I would appreciate feedback from others on my opinion. And i mean FEEDBACK, not "who cares" or "This guy will always beat Sage".

All these people posting comments about cheating seem to have lost sight of the fact that this kid has some amazing running technique. Nice strides, keeping his head up... combine that with supreme fitness and you've got a deadly combination.

He should be tested my ass. Just cause the guy posting this video cant do it he thinks hes an expert on what it takes to do it. I ran a 1:57 800m, 4:18 1600m, and a 9:01 in the 3200m. In a single day at a regular dual meet. This kid has talent and is a hard worker he should be congratulated

I have to agree with baw090971 that German Fernandez is continuing to perform at an extremely high level in college where the athletes are tested. Therefore johnharlin we ought to hear from you about your suspicions now. Thanks.

It's always funny to see the 3 or 4 people that think they can run at German's pace in the beginning, then just fall back so far soon after

well im very proud of you for turning a basketball player into an average (high school average) miler. And if the worst you've ever ran in high school was 10:07 then you probably didn't work that hard after that point cuz you most likely should be on a national level by now
