English is a germanic language, human beings learn languages faster and easier, when the language is from the same root as their mother tongue. Indogermanic language tree in europe, slavic, romanic, germanic. That's the reason, so people who already do speak a germanic language like obviously german or dutch or swedish etc will have it easier. So they don't just have the same grammar structure, they share the same root, the germanic one.

I'm German myself haha, so I don't know how difficult it is to learn for a foreign speaker, I just said what English speakers have told me :) Most of them were really desperate learning German, but then again it probably has also a lot to do with how good you are with languages in general.

I have a friend who did German in uni then met & married a German lady … when he goes to Germany people keep talking to him in English. It used to really annoy him when he was still learning. To be honest, I'd do the same kind of thing if I met a European as in Britain if you can say ANYTHING beyond bonjour/guten tag/hola, it's a status symbol. In fact, you're a genius!
