Great video. I would put "Es ist um vier" at 1:51 and 4:47 as the last possibility, because it is used only regional, wheras the other possibilities are used generally.

Question: can I say "halb sechzehn", "viertel for siebzehn" ecc... Or can I use these only with numbers from 1 to 12?

Only 1 to 12. Same with "halb xy" "viertel vor xy" etc. Wheather its am or pm is usually implied by the context. 13Uhr,..., 24Uhr is only really used when you tell the time in detail like "es ist 16 Uhr 32" (meaning its 16:32)

Hey Ania! Thank you so much for these, I'm learning so much! I have two quick questions for you: - What's the difference between "die Zeit" and "die Uhrzeit"? When should I use each one? - I noticed you pronounce "Vier" and "Viertel" like Fur-Tel. When studying at school we pronounced it like the English word "Fear" so like "Vee-aah"... Was my teacher really bad or is it just a regional thing? Thanks again! Du bist ein genie!!!!

"Uhrzeit" means the time on the clock. "Zeit" means the time you need to do something or you stil have to do something (for example:"Wie viel Zeit habe ich noch, um Fern zu sehen, bevor ich ins Bett muss?"; "How much time least to watch TV, until I have to go to bed?" (My english grammer ist not so good) ).

I would pronounce German "Vier" near to english "fear". For "Viertel" I know to ways to pronounce, the frist like "Vier" and "tel" at the end; and a pronounciation like the german word "Für" and "tel" in the end. But I think the first one is correct.

The way I learnt 4:30 or halb 5 was half to 5. So it was half way to 5 o'clock!

I think this makes the most sense to English speakers, because we already say “It’s half past 4”, it’s a quarter past 4” or “it’s a quarter ‘til 5”. We just don’t usually say “it’s half BEFORE 5”, or “it’s half until 5”, but it’s not that hard to learn because it’s structure/pattern is so similar to what we do already.

Hallo Ania,"viertel vor" und "viertel nach" verwendet man nicht überall in Deutschland. Besonders in den neuen Bundesländern sagt man das anders, nämlich "viertel", "halb" und "dreiviertel" der angefangenen Stunde des Tages. 16:15 Uhr ist viertel 5, 16:45 ist dreiviertel 5. Durch die unterschiedliche Art, die Zeit in Deutschland auszudrücken, kommt es immer wieder zu Missverständnissen. Ein Hinweis dazu wäre gut, weil ich es schon öfter erlebt habe, dass "wir treffen uns viertel 4", bei einem anderen als "viertel nach vier" verstanden wurde und er dann eine ganze Stunde zu spät war.

In English we usually use the first number in German,Hindi,Bangla etc put the 2nd number first. Best way to explain is like 45=Forty Five Five forty Its pretty easy just have to rearrange it.
