I'll be honest with you: This is not my favorite Coke Studio reaction. The way the vocalists sing is very sad, howling and judging and I felt it went a bit over the top. BUT that is just my personal view and the reason is because my ears are used to different kind of music. I still have to appreciate the skill and talent of these singers very much. The instrumental background was very basic on this. It was actually 9 minutes of solo singing over a nice musical carpet.

The "crazy part" without captions or sub-titles is called an "Alaap", it has no words so there is no translation. It's a technique used in Eastern classical music to create ambiance or emotion

TMI : The male singer is "RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN" and is honoured with Doctor of music degree at Oxford university .He's also a maestro in music. Fun fact : he is the 17th generation singer in his dynasty and His family has been in music bussiness for over 600 years . And The female singer is "ABIDA PARVEEN" . She is a Queen of SUFI music. I bet no one can do it better than her ..in simple words She is a living legend! And What makes her special is the robustness of her voice and clarity of her expression. In live shows, she looks so involved and full of energy, and can switch between slow and fast tunes with effortless ease.. I'd like to add , these two really understand the music.

It is a ghazal, love poetry, written originally by Amir Khusrao for his spiritual master, Saint Nazimuddin Auliya. At first parts of the song, he writes in imagining himself in the perspective of a Hindu girl who was enchanted by the pious and high character of Nizamuddin. Therefore, she converts to Islam to try to satisfy him, the 'chaap Tilak sub cheen li ra' chaap tilak is the red dot Hindus endore themselve as a religious symbol and purity , the line meaning you snatched my red dot, thereby every trace of myself. Also, later on in the song, she mentions her to be blessed if Nizamuddin was the one who would color her hue, ie witness her conversion to Islam. He also mentions himself by name, as it is common for poets in Urdu, expressing his devotion to his guru/peer. The song is sung in Old Urdu which was still forming as a new language and still is quite different from other coke studio songs which are sung in modern Urdu/Punjabi. Also, poems are interpretive so they can also be taken as devotion to God, rather than to lover.

In most Punjabi/Urdu poetry the subject is kept anonymous so it can be applied to anything really. You get to decide who the “beloved” is be it an actual lover or god. Don’t read into who they’re talking about, focus on the feeling.

If you think this is sad, I would suggest listen to Coke Studio "Rang" by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan (same male singer) and Amjad Sabri (late), interestingly the lyrics were written by the same guy, Ameer Khusro who wrote this one about 900 years ago. It has a contrasting feel to this one, a totally jubilant mood. By the way, just to fill you in about this particular song, "Chaap, and Tilak" referred to as the symbols or things that Hindus wear, so the poet/disciple (Ameer Khusro) acknowledging his spiritual leader (Nizamuddin Auliya) who has been inspirational in reverting lots of non-Muslims to the fold of Islam.

It's not a matter of fact whether you like this type of song or not, just imagine the flow of the song and the talent these guys are singing, no one can do that, they are showing their inner emotions to soulful emotions of human nature and humans have different devotions in which they express themselves, just watch how the talent of human nature is in nature and how their devotion is shown in this song, whether you like it or not but as a musician and vocalist know what this song is. Only real Vocalists of the world can know this talent, this is not of your criteria or anyone of us, they are the masters of spiritual songs in the sub-continent.

Dear Cojak, I would suggest you to please check-out the description of the Coke Studio Songs to get to the essence of that particular piece of art... This poetry is centuries old and spiritual in it's origin... Secondly, the kind of scatting these legends perform is the South East Asian classical way of showcasing your talent and excellence through touching different notes in a very disciplined and systematic manner... These are not just random scats but the already defined and established vocal patterns to follow using different "Ragas"...

The song can also be interpretation of love at first sight. When lover see his love and the love put a single glance at him from behind the veil. Cultural relevance and awareness is a must to understand these lyrics. For German it means nothing coz normally females don't cover their faces. In subcontinent, they do cover faces. Whenever they look at you deep in your eyes it means they have given attention to you. The lover has fallen in love with those deep eyes. (intoxicated means fallen in love)

The multi-layered lyrics are about painful separation from the Source, and the effects of this separation on the seeker. There are solfege Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, and Si in western songs that are used as musical note when learning to sing. The Pakistani and Indians use Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni which is our equivalent of Do Re Mi... and the parts without the translations is them just using these solfege to make those sounds to show emotions in different musical notes (high n low notes). They are not singing actual words. The singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has even used these techniques in movies like MEL GIBSON'S APOCALYPTO.

The song is full of metaphors where the beloved on an earthly plane is representing the divine. so if the divine turns towards you its "EXTASY' . ..and that is what is meant by one glance . However while all this may sound creative and nice to the uninitiated it is exactly the point at which Sufism detaches itself from mainstream Islam... goes off the rails so to speak. For what happens In the end is that the Sufi IS LED EVER SO SLOWLY ASTRAY BY the almost literal worship of his spiritual Masters as brother Gilani has just mentioned , and becomes full of himself with his poetry and musical genius.... in reality Leaving no time for the Almighty. Which is why Sufi's as a whole do not follow the path of the only "spiritual Master " appointed by the Almighty for the world .....Muhammad , blessed be his name ! Singing, Dancing, Twirling as the dervish do becomes his worship .... replacing the 5 Daily prayers. Thus Sufism is a feel good philosophy of a few ...Masquerading as Spiritual Intellectualism.... but alas... it is not the tradition or Sunnah of the Prophet may Peace and blessings be upon him.

Chhaap Tilak Sab Chheeni (چھاپ تلک سب چھینی) was written and composed by Amir Khusro, Sufi Mystic, back in the 14th century. which means, what you are listening to has been transferred as an oral tradition from generation to generation for 700 years. Here is your real connection with history. Without Amir Khusro, there would be no Hindustani Classical Music, in the way we know it today. Khusro also invented the Sitar. He took the traditional two-headed drum, the pakhawaj (which till date is used with dhrupad music) sliced it down the middle into two independent drums, thus birthing the tabla. Muslims who pray five times a day, can get a mark on the forehead, where over the years, it has come into contact with the floor. This is called the 'chhap' The 'tilak' is a religious mrak, usually of sandlewood paste that a Hindu might wear on his forehead, more or less in the same place where the chhaap appears for the Muslims. The sufis were mystics...saints whose understanding of the supreme being transcended the boundaries of a particular religion. They often converse with the supreme being like one would converse with their lover. Their relationship with god was tender and effervescent... almost romantic in nature. Here Khusro says, the moment he/she (god )lay eyes on him, he has forgotten about the chhaap or the tilak and has simply surrendered to love. I summarise, of course. Because you can talk for a lifetime about every sentense Khusro wrote.

Its beyond anyone’s understanding. You can't understand this kind of music merely by translating . It’s a story deep down submerged with trance philosophy. Even the native would have to listen thousands time to comprehend the eternal message of it. The lyrical pattern are not simply a poem. Its sufi mystic. So you can not really relate without knowing the ancient hindu culture and sufism mixed together in subcontinent for many centuries. The language of this kind of epic is even mixed with persian, sanskrit and contemporary language like punjabi hindi and Urdu. If you try to understand the classic of this kind, this is not just a lyric or poem, its an epical ballad. The writer of this song is 12th century persian sufi mystic poet Amor khosru writing about his spiritual leader Nizamuddin ayulia of Delhi. Amir Khosru can be compared to Dante or Homer and the lyric could be compared to the Iliad. So please dont embarrass yourself. With love and God bless. Danke

This type of singing is call qawali, It's has double meaning, One means like ( about connecting to God), Second means like ( about your love ones), This is common in Muslim community in South east Asia ( Pakistan + India)

14:15 "I wish that (part)had subtitles" : That part doesn't mean anything, nothing to translate there. Except for emotions (that very fast dynamic tones) indicates a racing heart (in love, emotion etc.) unsettleness of mind in etc.

Not alot of people will tell you or understand this but i believe that the song actually contains alot deeper meaning which u can't understand just by reading lyrics which i think is the real source of all that pain is the situation of people and country they belong to since a long time. It is sad but it is more than just a song if u know the history and present, i think tajdar e haram by atif depicts more clear image of what i am trying to say if u pay actual attention to the lyrics in that..

Hey buddy. I really like your reaction videos and its so fascinating to see how you interpret the context of these songs. If you wanna review a rather pop version of coke studio, do a reaction video for "Rockstar" by Ali Zafar. I'm sure you're gonna enjoy that one. Much love and respect from Pakistan!

In India, pakistan In Sufi music God is considered as a Lover Hence lyrics become critical to understand for new people. devotion is the Love. Also Lyrics are written as a Female feelings but male sing it so its very confusing for urdu hindi knowing people too... E.g Coming :- male : Aata hu Female:aati hu Going:- Male Jata hu Female: jaati hu Your Male :tera Female : teri Crazy {in love} Male :Deewana Female : Deewani In sufi songs male uses aati hu, Deewani, teri etc

At 7:40 "you have snatched away all traces of me With one glance of your eye" refer to a single affectionate gaze of beloved person of the lover that means so much for the lover that he's agrees to sacrifice everything for the beloved. "even your single glance of care is the universe to me. I don't need any thing else."
