German Shepherd adopts Orphan Kittens

My German shepherd Brooke was a great help as I raised some orphan kittens for the animal shelter. I fed them, she was responsible for washing and toileting. This combination worked great and all four grew up as healthy as if they had been raised by their own mom. Soon they will be ready to go back to the animal shelter. Both Brooke and I will really miss them, but all cats are adopted out here in Whitehorse, so all four are guaranteed a good home. They will make super pets, they are imprinted on both humans and big dogs, they are very affectionate and confident. They are Sam (aka Chunky Monkey) clouded tabby boy, Suzie (aka Little Girl) clouded tabby girl, Savannah (aka Smokey) striped tabby girl and Sky (aka Little Black Mamba) black boy with white front paws and spot on his chest.
In this video they are around two weeks old.

Yes, I lost my dog earlier this year to cancer and when I feel up to it, I'd love to get a dog and a cat, so they both have a buddy. Plus I've always wanted a dog and cat, as they really can become best friends and they are cute together. Really enjoyed this video. In fact, I'm going to play it again. X

This is really good for the kittens psychologically as well as physically. It's tough for a human to give an orphaned kitten the right kind of stimulation, because their needs are so different from human babies. But puppies and kittens are pretty similar, so your German Shepherd instinctively knows what they need to feel safe & secure.

That is precious:) What a wonderful dog! My female shepherd was the same way, so gentle and motherly to all creatures, she used to babysit my rats on the bed, and they would climb all over her, lick her lips, sit between her paws and let her groom them. It was the sweetest thing. I even had a mouse that liked to ride on her head, and she would walk sooo carefully, and he would sort of flatten himself into her fur and not want to move lol. She was the best dog ever. I will always miss her. She lived to 15.

this reminds me of my dog Bo, an Australian shepherd. at first he didn't know what to do with the kittens that had lost their mother but then he started to take care of them. I didn't know how attached Bo was to the orphan kitties until he jumped in the way of a moving car to save one of them. his leg was broken, but I could tell that he didn't regret what he did to protect the kittens. This just goes to show that the loyalty of a dog is something truly special.

MXMM5 yes, he's ok. Every so often his leg will hurt and he will have a noticeable limp, but he's still happy as can be.

My eyes have teared to this many times per month every month for years. She behaves no differntly than the kittens mother would have. They behave no differently towards her than they would if she were their birth mother. It's a beautiful story that I never tire of.

+niki mallik We humans do this all the time, you need to give your species more credit. We may be the cruelest species on this planet but we are also the most compassionate, the most empathetic and the most caring species on the planet. No other animal comes close. The reason my dog is so caring here is because I, a human, brought her up to be kind to other animals. If she had grown up wild, without a human guiding her, she would have seen these kittens as food. With everything there is an equal and opposite good and bad, and despite everything, we humans are an amazing species.

Brooke is the most beautiful German Shepherd I have ever seen. She has such soulful and loving eyes. I love her little "wink" at the end of the video! Those kittens were so lucky to have her…and you! This video is precious beyond words to describe in 3 different languages! She has fully adopted them and is caring and loving them as if they were her own offspring. Sometimes we can learn so much about how to treat someone different if we will only learn from animals. This is so wonderful that I may lose my manhood card, but I do not care. She is just so loving as if the kittens were her own pups. I could watch this for hours!

Such a sweet, sweet video. I really love animals and this video really warmed my heart. All of them, German Shepard and kittens are so adorable. I am wondering if you kept at least one of the kittens, cuz they had such a wonderful bond. It would have been nice to see more videos of them sharing their lives together.

Giving these kittens back to the shelter was the hardest thing ever. I think I met the people who wanted to adopt the girls, they seemed very nice, but the two boys went to the same place and that sometimes means the people only get males so they do not have to pay for spaying. People who do not intend to spay or neuter their cats are potentially a very bad place for a kitten to go. I still think about my two precious little boys and worry about them, but there was no way we could afford another cat and how was I going to chose? I loved them all. I don't know if I ever want to do this again, the ending was just so hard.

+CreekValleyCritters I adopted two males years ago because I have a preference for males. I did fix them both so they'd live long happy lives and they wouldn't contribute to over population. I hope those boys were fixed and that they're all with loving families.

I thought all shelters spayed and neutered their animals before adoption, and the fee was to help cover the cost of surgery?

Our shelter does that with adult animals, but with kittens and puppies it is included in the price which is only reimbursed once the neutering/spaying has happened. They feel it is not good for the health of a very young animal to be deprived of the hormones let alone go through the surgery.

It's definitely tear jerking ! My old dog ,my best best friend BRANDY went through a false pregnancy and it was heartbreaking! Until I came acrossed a liter of kittens and immediately brought them home all but one was eating wet food the last one was very underweight noticed somehow that BRANDY had enough milk to go around I let BRANDY and the scrawny kitten up on my bed and I slept on the couch I woke up the next morning to a strange sound then I looked over to check on the kitten and to my surprise she was soaking wet and latched on to BRANDY sucking down an unlimited suply of milk (i had an ear to ear smile) that kitten brought BRANDY out of her deep depression it was awesome to be there ! . Rest In Peace my best friend !
