Ikr I got bit once by a chihuahua. Then got chased by 2 German shepherds. I didn’t know I could move as fast as I did and jumped in my truck. After the owner realized I was there and coming around the corner she got them back into her house. When she looked at me she said all clear this lady lost any ounce of compassion and was trying to say she never saw anyone run as fast as she did while still holding the packages. I didn’t find it amusing.

I bet you're afraid of mine. A five pound toy poodle and a 7 pound same breed. They're furoscious when there's a knock or an unknown noise outside my home. But won't burst a grape in a fruit fight. But you're gonna know that they know you're out there and chances are, don't belong. 😂😂😂

I was travelling from NYC to Miami by car and had my Tibetian Terrier with me. He was a sweet fluffball, big male for his breed. First night stop in a motel where it said NO DOGS. I didn't tell them I had him with me. Around 1 a.m., I woke up to his growling. I had never heard him like that. I heard a shuffle at the door and got out of my bed and stood with my back against the wall next to the door. Billy suddenly freaked out. Someone turned the doorhandle but being a cautious European, I had locked the door. Billy lunged at the door with an incredible aggressive bark. Someone ran. I packed my bags and left immediately, put the money for the night on the table and drove to the next police station I could find. They let me sleep at the station and went to check that motel. Turned out it had been the owner. Police told me it was dangerous for a young girl to travel like that. I had not considered that because my home is Switzerland which has always been very safe. For the rest of my journey, I stayed in hotels who accepted my dog. They were safe. That's 40 years ago. I still miss Billy. I had gotten him as a rescue when he was 6 months old, suffering from distemper. He cost me a fortune in medical bills but I would do it all over again. I'm 60 now and still tear up when thinking of him. Love you, my baby!

My dog kept getting between the door and me pushing my back and rumbling which he never did. I told the man i didnt think the dog was going to let that happen. I watched that man walk back to his car and drive away...he was so not out of gas. Best pooch ever

One night I was just watching TV, my cat came into the room and started making sounds that I had never heard before, looking all agitated, she kept going in the back and coming out and practically screaming about something, I followed her and saw a man cutting open the screen on my window, he saw me and ran away. It just amazed me, she spent the rest of the night, walking around like she was protecting her territory.

My Gernan Shepherd not only saved me and my child from a home invasion, but also saved the intruder. Dog alerted to a young guy breaking into the bedroom window and saved the man's life by scaring him off because I was behind her with my gun waiting for the interior to be breached before firing. Police caught him, and I learned that it was an 18yo. I could have taken his entire life away from him and taken him from the people who loved him. It would have destroyed me to do so. My dog saved 3 lives that night.

My Rottweiler woke me up out of a dead sleep breathing in my face and shaking with excitement. Someone had gotten in silently through my front door and was stacking my entertainment center contents in the center of the living room and she knew he was there. I thought she needed to go outside so I got up and opened the bedroom door. She bolted and all I heard was screaming and crashing. By the time I made it to the front door all I saw was two legs hanging out of a moving car's window missing a shoe which she brought to me with great excitement. Dogs are the best.

My Dad had a “friend” that would come over and was always whispering to me and trying to get me alone but I was afraid to tell. One day he drove up and Sheba got between my legs and began growling at him. He brushed her off and stepped closer and she jumped at him and ripped into his hand. When I met the girl I eventually married, she was walking her Rotweiller, unleashed. When we struck up our first coversation, I noticed this enormous dog was just calmly watching me, with unnerving focus. Pretty sure he would have torn me to pieces if I would have made a move to hurt my future wife. We became friends, but it took him some time. This dog was present, paying attention, all the time. Wonderful boy. RIP Thor.

I had a Doberman growing up. We adopted her from a very neglectful home when she was already full grown. She loved and protected us so fiercely. A man tried to break into our home and she tore his leg open and he ran away but he didn’t get far with a ripped open leg, he was caught not even an hour later. That wasn’t the last time she saved us since we lived in a bad part of town.

I had a German Shepherd, Bear. One night in the winter, when my husband was traveling and I was alone with my baby, Bear went crazy, running through the house , barking like crazy. He finally settled down. When I went outside the next morning, there were footprints in the snow all around my house. I'll always believe he saved my life that night.

My German shepherd saved my life maybe twice. The first story was when my mom and I had just moved to a new house. The first few days he kept barking at night, mainly at the front door. I thought he just had to get used to the new house and it's sounds. But after the second or third time I heard someone quickly walk away from the house. He stopped barking after the fourth night and never had to do it afterwards. That's why I always felt safe growing up with dogs sleeping in the house. The second story was when I (16 f) was walking through a forest with the German shepherd and my pug. The G.S. was free to run around as it liked, the pug had the tendency to walk away so it was always on a leash. So while the G.S. was in the forest and out of view a man passed me by. I greeted him and he started asking if I was alone in the forest and if I didn't want to come home with him. Needless to say, I was creeped out. I told him I was just alone walking with my two dogs and when he started insisting I called my G.S. He probably thought it would be another small dog coming. HE WALKED AWAY SO FAST when my G.S. jumped out of the bushes and calmly sat next to me. Extra note: I have an Old-German-Shepherd breed. They can be are absolutely huge. And mine was almost completely black and almost had the size off a small bear. He was great to cuddle with too. I loved him

One night, walking my dog, he all of a sudden stop dead in his tracks. Focused at the woods and brush straight ahead. We stood there for a few seconds, then he turned us around and practically dragged me back home. We did this walk daily and I have no idea what it was he saw or sensed that night.. just grateful he felt the need to keep me safe ❤ Edit: Adding info to some comments: I live in a "rural city" in Canada. It is fairly dark that you need to walk around with lights and reflectors. Gun laws in Canada = if you know, you know. My dog is a husky and not the guarding type of breed. He enjoys going out and about, so this particular situation made no sense to me in the moment. My area is known for coyotes and fisher cats mostly. Though there is the occasional moose or bear. Less, lately due to the expansion of infrastructure in the area. The critters like raccoons, skunks, etc. and let's include squirrels, my dog would not be running away, but running after those types of animals. I hope I clarified enough for some and I thank everyone for their beautiful and heartfelt comments ❤️ My dog is now over 14yrs old and is about to leave us. Take care of everyone and everything you hold dear! Bless you all 🥰

My parents had just moved into a new neighborhood. They'd gotten to know the next door neighbors and their dog. One evening my mom was standing in the driveway and the dog came over. Our German Shepherd would hear outsiders and would not bark or growl, but would run behind the hedges where you could not see him. You could climb the fence, go over the fence and he still would not react. However, when you came 8-10 feet inside the yard, he would charge from behind those hedges in full attack mode. No one taught him to do that. Amazing breed of dogs.

I remember when we rescued a half pit half Doberman girl.. A neighbor was using her as bate.. My daughter went and stole her out of the yard as we were moving away the next day.. As long as I went to the door she was fine with ppl coming in. My teen son just barged thru the front door (us not knowing what she was going to do) and she got up and lunged at him. He had to turn to keep from her getting him. From then on we knew we had to knock and answer the door until she got accustomed to us. After she got accustomed to us we were able to stop having to do that but she was one of the best dogs.. loving and obedient. She passed away many years later to a big abdominal tumor. Miss you Bella 💕

I, literally, just rescued a little pitty girl & already, i know that she would protect my son & i, without question. She thought she heard something the other night, & stood between him & i & the back door, growling... i knew there was nothing out there, so i had to take her outside & reassure her... but it's super encouraging to know that she is already protective over us & our home!!❤❤

Soo relatable and true... I had German shepherd... One day someone was trying to break into my house from the back door. I was in deep sleep, chief was sleeping beside me, he got alerted, walked out of my room, which woke me up from my sleep. I thought he's either going to pee or drink water, so i tried to fall asleep again. Within 10 seconds i hear the most terrifying, monstrous, demonic growl I've ever heard in my life. And literally 1 second after the growl i hear footsteps sprinting away from my backyard. I was literally terrified to move in my bed not because of the intruders but because of chief's growl. I didn't knew chief could do that. He was the most gentle dog ever. And another 10 seconds later chief just casually walked back into the room, snuggled next to me and went back to sleep. As I realised chief is still my good ol doggo, i calmed down a bit and got up, lit up the whole house, front yard and back yard, check house surroundings through windows, no one was their, i opened back door and sure enough i could barely make out few footsteps. I took few pics of the footsteps and reported to the cops next day. I was doing all this and meanwhile Chief was sound asleep as if he knew he overdid the scaring 😂 and no sane human being will return to the house snd i was safe to walk around the house. Chief was a straight up gangster.

Not related to break ins, but I had a black lab who was the daughter of a police dog, she was so gentle. She never barked except for very rare occasions. And it was a bark that commanded respect and attention. The other dog we had was humping her, and she usually just let him do it. But one time she didn’t like it. She let out one bark and he immediately departed from the area. One time she was on a walk, and a neighbor’s dog was barking. She had enough, let out one bark and the neighbor’s dog immediately shut up. She would break up my brother and mine’s play fights by standing in between us. I’ve never seen a dog so gentle and affectionate, yet command so much respect when the situation called for it. I miss her.

Finally got up and went to the living room. I didnt turn on any lights and could see the cigarette glow. He was leaning against the tree out front. I whispered to my my evil 45 lb mutt and her shephard sidekick, "lets go". Evil mutt was THE BEST GUARD DOG and was training the shephard well. We tip towed down the hall and when I opened the front door to the building and yelled, "get him!" the chased him down the street. The whole block heard him screaming and yelling. Dogs stomped back in the snow, snorting and proud of themselves. ❤ Good dog.

One of my old dogs broke it's leash to save my life back when I was in diapers. We had to have him put down because the coyote he saved me from had mange and rabies. I do still remember him running towards me, and at the time I didn't understand what was going on, but that's all I remember from it. Hearing the story from my parents, how he lunged out of his dog house immediately into a sprint and didn't even flinch when the leash snapped off the chair leg it was tied to, then ran past me and lunged at a coyote that was stalking at the corner of the house. I wish I coulda been a fly on the wall. I owe my life to a dog I hardly remember. My older sister said I used to bug him, and when he'd growl I would say, "He's purring."

My mom answered the door to someone in a Comcast shirt asking to check her cable box out of the blue. Her Shepherd stood beside her leaning slightly against her leg. She felt his silent growl through her leg and decided the last thing she was going to do was put him in a room as the guy asked. The Shepherd was a gentle giant that never displayed anything but love. He never greeted visitors like that and she said that was the only time she was ever afraid of him, and she was terrified. He overtook her life long fear of bears. Not because she believed he'd have hurt her in any way, but she knew at that moment he was pure wolf ready to defend his pack, and it would have been primal. She called Comcast after she closed the door and they said unequivocally they had no one who should have been within a mile or so of her house. We lost him at 12 years old and he never hurt a single person or another animal in his life.

My mother had a GSD she trained herself from the time it was a puppy. Sweetest smartest girl you could ever come across! In the 1970s our family lived on a hobby farm. My father was at work when some drunk hunters came into the barn yard to hunt in the woods behind our house. They assumed no one was at home since car was gone so could trespass with no one the wiser. Found out otherwise when Sheba rocketed out from the barn followed by my mom with her rifle (pack of feral dogs in area killing barn animals). The hunters were stopped by Sheba as they were stepping out from their truck. They made the arrogant mistake of arguing with mom about whether a five foot nothing female could stop the three men from hunting in those woods and told her to go back into the house where she belonged. All she said was "Sheba play nice" and Sheba turned into a growling barking fury hellbent on tearing chunks into their hides. They got back into their truck in a hurry (minus some parts of clothing from the one closest to Sheba's teeth) and tore out of the yard. Mom called the sheriff's office and let them know what happened, a description of the truck, and what they looked like. The men were later found at the emergency room by the sheriff when he checked there after the doctor reported a biting incident and said it was suspicious. They were arrested for drunk driving, trespassing, and several other charges since they had drugs in the truck, too. Sheba managed to tear more than clothing off one of them chasing them back and the doctor became suspicious of their story when they couldn't keep it straight. Sheba had a nice reward for supper and plenty of lovings that night. Rest in peace Sheba. You were definitely one in a million! ❤

Momma used "Sheba play nice." because my father objected to Sheba being taught to attack on command. Momma felt it was necessary and did so when he wasn't around because she was alone on a ten acre farm out in the boondocks of Minnesota with no vehicle available but a tractor and two horses. Stuck in place with three kids all under the age of ten. The nearest neighbors were better than half a mile away. We were firmly versed in the use of the command ONLY when absolutely necessary. Her reasoning was no one else but us would be able to know the correct command to get Sheba to respond as needed if the situation warranted action. My siblings and I watched the action from the dining room window when she gave the command. The hunters laughed at the wrong time. Momma is no longer with us, either. It's comforting to think of her and Sheba having fun playing together in some heavenly meadow.

I have a German Shepherd/Blue Heeler mix who had a rough upbringing before I came and took her home. It took only a week for us to bond luckily. She was rough around the edges, and I had to be careful introducing her to people (still is to this day). But there was one family friend that she absolutely hated. She wouldnt go near him, and didnt like him being anywhere near me for YEARS!! Turns out he was molesting his daughters, who I went to school with at the time. Somehow, she knew, and I have never ignored her since then. She has also jumped through a window screen late at night bc someone tried to come in through my bedroom window at the back of my mom's old house. The guy was on drugs and was known for breaking in and stealing things. She messed him up, cops were loving on her and joked about recruiting her! She has the best instincts out of every dog I've ever had so far. She just senses things in people that I dont. If my dog has an issue with you, so do I, she's so loving now to majority of people. If you dint pass the vibe check...we can't have a relationship. It's Scar-Scars house, I just pay the bills. She's 6 now and she still protects me and my family. There have been so many instances that I owe this dog my life. So many people told me to give up on her throughout her life, but she only bit me once, and it was early on when she didnt trust humans. Since then, she's been the best dog to me. For anyone taking on an aggressive dog, discipline will never work. Patience, love, and treats is the key! Once you have that bond, it's the best feeling in the world. Idk what I'll do when she's gone. I may have "saved" her when I decided to take her home, but that dog was truly put in my life to save me from myself and others. She's my other half. My other dog (Austrailian Shepherd) is afraid of everything, but he's still a puppy. When she alerts, he hides under or behind me, lol

That sounded like a mouse trap going off, then being flipped around by a dying mouse, I’m on a farm, heard that sound before. My baby was almost 11 when he developed an aggressive cancer on his face 😭 he was the most in tune with people shepherd, he never took commands, you just talked to him and he knew. I have medical conditions and he knew before I did when I was going to have problems. He was a birthday gift from my sister and daughter. I’ve been watching for a deal and on rescue sites (I’m on disability) to hopefully find another baby. My baby’s ashes rest on my headboard, he was the bestest good boy ever.

My young dog, a Cavalier King Charles, alerted at my feet as I sat w/ my legs across the outdoor sofa on our screen porch, my back tucked into the corner/arm rest. She had never vocalized before and she wasn’t sure how to. There were some strange barks/growls coming from her as she looked into the house. Then she moved onto my lap and got more vocal. I was afraid to look, afraid I would see someone walking down the hall, into the living room and moving toward the porch. I finally, fearfully, looked inside and was relieved that I saw no one. Then, I thought, what’s today? It was the day of the baby shower for the mother of the family’s first great-grandchild. My dog clearly observed spirit … my parents and/or grandparents … but I didn’t. I soothed my dog and then called my sister in Illinois and told her to be alert … she may have visitors during the shower later today.

Good dog. Had mine alert one night and caught a guy climbing the fence. I told him to back off and he ignored me. Only time my girl got to use the get him command. She didnt bite at him but 85 lbs of snarling fur and teeth can be its own deterrent. He listened to her and ran away. She came prancing back to me, so proud.

My first dog was a police trained German Shepard and he was the best babysitter I ever had. He kept me corralled, went with me when I was allowed to roam, and when people made the mistake to threaten me or my dad or sister, he was deadly. I had a similar experience with my German Shepherd Dog. We’d moved into a 1st floor apartment. It was a closet-sized studio apartment with only one door. It faced outside - not into a building’s interior hall. My dog woke me up in the wee hours by touching her nose to my face just in time to hear someone turning the door handle. I jumped out of bed and grabbed my phone to call for help and then my dog started barking loudly. I can’t even describe how thankful I was to have a dog. I couldn’t hear anything over her barking, so whoever it was got scared off. I got new locks installed, one of them a deadbolt, by the end of day. She got bacon.

Correction, there's nothing scarier than a friendly dog, who has never alerted or growled before suddenly stand up, alerted, hackles raised, baring her teeth and low growling at the front door, at night, and the door is unlocked. This happened once in our dog, Penny, entire 13 years of life. My daughter and I were watching a show on the couch with the lights out and our dog did that. I handed my daughter the phone and quietly told her be ready to dial 911. Went to turn the deadbolt. As soon as I got it locked, the handle turned slowly and I almost peed my pants. Our dog was still in the same state, eyes trained on the door ready to attack. I would never have guessed her capable of that, but at that moment I didn't doubt she would have hurt someone if she could have had they come through that door. She wasn't messing around. I made my daughter take the phone into her bedroom and wait there until Penny calmed down. And if she heard any loud or odd noise to dial the cops immediately and hide. I checked the back porch door too, because it didn't lock, or really stay closed on its own, we had it barricaded with a dresser and some heavy boxes since the landlord wouldn't fix it. After about 30 minutes our dog relaxed and laid down, but she kept her eyes on the door. My daughter slept with me that night, when we were able to finally go to sleep.

This happened with my blue heeler. She was the friendliest loving dog in the world, and would go up to everyone, even sketchy looking people, asking for pets and attention. Until one day a creepy dude started walking toward me looking like he was up to no good and she immediately locked eyes with him, growled and snarled louder then I could imagine, bared her teeth, and all the hair on her spine turned upright. The guy immediately turned on his heels and left, but I noticed he had something shiny in one hand as he walked away. Could’ve been nothing, but my gut tells me it was some type of weapon, and my dog’s reaction only confirms that in my mind.

On our way back, he did the same thing and looking in the woods. I heard something I assumed was a deer and I let him off leash again to keep him safe so he can run away from whatever danger. The “deer” walked in a straight path along side us until I called my bf to meet us on speakerphone. When I got to the end of the trail. Older guy walked out the woods and stood looking around. At 8 months now, he’ll physically put himself between me and my bf when we play fight. Yesterday he followed a friend around my house to supervise her. Even though she was petting him as soon as she went rouge (to get some water) he left my boyfriends room to follow her and bark at her. He didn’t stop until I said so😂 he’s the best boy. He’s very protective and so am I. I don’t let people invade his space or touch him without him initiating it.

When he left, I looked at my daughter and said you pay attention to what Chloe just did. Dogs know when someone is inherently bad. Luckily, she found out before she was hurt or anything. Chloe passed away at 15 years old. I miss her every day. She has been gone for seven yearsand I still get tears in my eyes for missing her. I can’t even get a new dog because I loved her so

Chloe was a great doggy. I’ve had to put 2 down so far in my life and currently have a third dog. As you know, they’re great companions and protectors❤ never say never

I still miss my last Rottweiler. But I did get another dog, only one month after her transcendence. It felt like I was betraying her, but do you think they'd want us to not have a guardian? I believed that if she couldn't be with me, and she had the ability to make the decision, she would've definitely wanted me to have another dog. ❤

I understand the great loss. There are so many good dogs in need of a good home. I hope you can at least think about sharing your great capacity for love with another animal who needs it. Hoping the right one comes into your life!

@MelissaDvorak I hope the same for this loving person. These dogs NEED people like us & we have enough love for them. I know the pain of getting another, after losing one you love so dearly, but our Beloved dogs wouldn't "want" us to be without a companion/ guardian. Don't be afraid of the pain of loss... it is a thing that comes with life & love. It's part of it. I live with the belief that I will be reunited with all my pets who have transcended.

currently going through something similar, its been 3 years since my lady lost her dog daisy (teacup terrier). i'll spare you the details but we found ourselves at a rescue last week and adopting our new dog (irish wolfhound mix) that was surrended by their owners that said the dog was aggressive, bit their other dog, and suggested they euthanize her. which after a proper examination from a private vet it was all a bunch of bull shit. those scum bags abused and neglected this poor pup (6months). my girl never thought she could have another dog. everyday I see her falling in love with this rescue. it's amazing and fulfilling to watch and be apart of. I suggest if there's any part of you saying yes, listen to it. we don't regret it at all.

Grew up with the sweetest GSDs, our last one Bruno was the silliest and sweetest in my memory. He was extremely protective though, never been trained to be aggressive and yet we sent so many people to the hospital for preventive rabies shots and sutures because our dog thought they looked at us wrong. Didn't know it at the time, but apparently our house was famous beyond the our tiny village for being the safest with the scary dog. One night when I was home alone, a neighbor's house had a burglary attempt. The thief was being chased, and he tried to jump our gate. I would swear that if i wasn't keeping Bruno company and behind a secondary gate I'd have witnessed a bloodbath. He went completely feral and was literally salivating trying to get to the guy. Dude grew wings on his feet and jumped right back over the gate straight into the waiting cops. Miss Bruno, he was an angel, and a murder fluffball who loved us more than we deserved.

I drove with the German Shepherd, and she was bred from a canine and let me tell you she was the best guard dog. I always felt safe with her.

I had my dog Duchess when I was a kid. She was a terrier and not very big, she might have been 20 lbs. But if anybody messed with me she'd turn into an attack terrier. She knew when my friends were playing with me, and she also knew the difference when bigger boys tried to tease me or get me. I was a little Black girl in an all-white neighborhood. Duchie knew friend from foe, that little dog was my hero.

Had an ole' police dog that I fell in love with, when I was a teenager. He was chomping at the bit one night wanting outside. When I let him out he went straight to a guy looking in my bedroom window. He held him until the police arrived. He saved the day many times. I had a guy paint his picture. Miss that animal with my whole heart

My GSD-mix dog protected me for most of her 16 years. She was the reason I was safe as a single woman living alone. She's been gone 7 years and I miss her every moment of every day. Loved her more than I ever loved anyone.
