Meet Maximus, the singing German Shepherd! His owner recently discovered that his dog liked to howl whenever he heard people singing, so he decided to see if he could capture him on video while singing Eduard Khil's popular 'Trolololo' song.

This is beautiful natural behavior of a dog joining in what he perceives as his pack leader howling. On the downside your dog feels your singing sounds like a howling dog.

I'm not a dog behaviorist, or study the evolutionary history of wolves, but dogs are social creatures, and I wouldn't be surprised if the puppy is howling because he believes than his owner is howling as well. He doesn't seem to be too bothered, but more like he is reciprocating the "howl".

+Eucis93 Dogs generally do not (and in my experience, never) howl when they're in pain. Howling is something they do instinctively when they're trying to *interact* with a sound, like when my dog would pester me to play the piano for him and howl along every time. You could easily tell if the dog was in pain because he would almost definitely flatten his ears and whine, not perk up his ears to listen to the sound and turn his attention to its source. You seem to own a dog yourself, so I'm sure you're familiar with the body language dogs typically use to show these kinds of things.

Dogs where once wolves, they have just been domesticated over time, some of those instincts like howling together comes out to play once in a while, especially with dogs like German shepherds, Huskies, etc.
