This is a demonstration of how to work a German Short Row Heel in a contrasting color, two different ways. One with the traditional method which involves contrast colors going over the instep and a second way without the contrast going over the instep. This style of heel is also known by Boomerang, Yo-yo and Jo-jo. I hope you enjoy this and share it with your friends.

Hi Suzanne, I just wanted to pop in a quick comment to let you know how very helpful your tutorials are to me. I'm in my mid 60's and my goal for this year was to knit my very first sock. I have made 2 (odd) socks, using them as learning tools/samples until I figure out what is right for me and which method and result I enjoy more. Your easy to understand tutorials are my absolute go-to for help and learning. I thank you so much for taking the time to do these... even on your 4th of July celebrations! Happy 4th to you and yours. I'm in Australia, so it's just another Sunday here lol... and I'm working on 'just another sock' ... using Addi Crasy Trio for the first time which I'm really liking, but deep down I think I shall continue to be a Magic Loop gal with my ChiaoGoo's lol

I’ve found that the extra rows in the middle of the heel ( because you can’t stack the double stitches) makes for a very nice fitting heel compared to other short row methods.

I've never knit a sock, nor have I ever wanted to. In fact, when this video came up in my email, I thought, although I'm a devoted fan of Suzanne, maybe I should just skip this one. But then I came to my senses and thought it's always good to learn something new. I must say, you've tempted me...even more than the pretty sock yarns that I see when I go to my LYS. I still need to work my way through a bunch of UFOs (that's my promise to myself during lockdown) and then perhaps I'll try a pair. As always, thanks for making it do-able.

I found it so hard to find a good tutorial for my Toe Up with a GSR heel, in my own language. Googled in English, found you, and you saved me! No I also need to get the better stitches too, but thank you. Thank you also for seeing it through to how to finish it up nicely, those holes and all. My foot has a "high wrist", so I also need to find a way of nicely increase the width proportionally, preferably on the instep side just opposite from making the heal, not many sock patterns bother about that. I guess I must create my own pattern for my own feet, of course. Any suggestions otherwise? I made it with my first socks ever and your video, using the first example also, colours fitted nicely into the contrast colours. Thanks again!
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 3 жыл бұрын
For "high arches" I find that heel flap with turn and gussets is easier to alter to give more stitches around the instep. Make the heel flap 2 or 4 rows longer and therefor pick up more gusset stitches. This gives the extra circumference at the instep. Happy knitting.

Hello Suzanne. You’re one of the most skilled knitters I’ve ever come across so it’s only natural to go to you with my question. I’ve searched high and low but can’t find a good guide for the following : A sleeve cap knitted with GSR and stripes - changing color every 2 or 4 rows. I need to learn this technique so make symmetrical stripes that matches the body of a sweater - I hope I’m explaining it in a good way 😄 If you know a good technique please point me in the direction of it .. either here on KZfaq or online otherwise. Thanks for all your wonderful videos ❤️ Kind regards, Mie
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 2 жыл бұрын
this is a great question. I think your best bet would be to learn how to do contiguous sleeves. This would allow you to carry stripes from the body to the sleeve perfectly. The short row method, whether GSR or otherwise may not match exactly row to row from the body to the sleeve. Also, changing colors at each end of the short rows is going to present their own set of problems and may not look very tidy. I think you will love the contiguous sleeve method. Google it.

@kaceew
@kaceew 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not quite sure you would do the the extra rows when doing a toe, since you don't have an instep. Cause your foot goes in where the extra rows are . I LOVE the GSR toe , it fits me so well lol and I think it's pretty. I could be wrong about this I'm still kinda new compared to most people but just from my experience in GSR toes I don't think the extra rows are possible.

Do you have a video that covers how to knit a short row heel if you have a high instep?
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 4 жыл бұрын
This is such a great question. I have seen short row heels with additional rows at the leg edge, but they really do not increase the depth of the instep, which is the problem with high arches. I have exceptionally high arches, and although I can wear short row heels, I much prefer heel flap and gusset style heels. If the sock is a plain sock with no particular patterning happening over the instep, you can get away with the short row heel, but if there is stranding or any other type of patterning that will fall over the instep, the short row heel will cause the fabric to stretch over the instep and distort the patterning. Look at lots of hand knit socks on feet, with attention to the instep and you will see what I mean. This would be a great video topic. Thank you Elaine. Happy knitting.

Thank you Suzanna for ur videos. I still have a question about the heel stitches, do they have to be the first half of the round? Or it doesn’t really matter, which half should be knitted as the heel or as instep. Bcz in the beginning of the video, you mention that the tail of the main color should be on the left side.😢
@atrinka1
@atrinka1 4 жыл бұрын
thanks for this super-duper video! One question: this type of heel can be very shallow depending on the foot, if you knit the second type the instep has two fewer rows no? The use of the neon yarn is genius!
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your observation. Actually, the traditional German Short Row Heel, as shown in the first example has two more rows than other short row heels, due to the two rows which go all away around the sock. The second example, because of the added two rows to compensate for the loss of the stripe around the foot, has exactly the same number of rows as the first example. You can even count them in the cover picture if want. But, overall, your comment is correct, short row heels are shorter than heel flap/gusset heels. I have really high arches and prefer the heel flap/gusset style fo heel, but can still wear short row heels if I have to.
@justplainamerican
@justplainamerican 4 жыл бұрын
@@SuzanneBryan For some reason I thought the second way without the stripe around the instep would make the heel just a smidge deeper and that could be a good thing. Now I don't know. lol

To follow-up on heel depth w short row heels - if we initially divide the stitches with the center section a couple of stitches less will that make a slightly bigger/deeper heel? For example, starting heel with 36 st = divide them 13, 10, 13? Or too lopsided?
@ellen6262

I watched your video and it has helped me but I wonder after you did the wrap and turns and skipped to the end of the heel... Did you just continue knitting straight back and forth to finish the heel? I knitted all my double stitches together, did the wrap and turns and am stumped. I realize that knitting the rest of the heel is not that much work and can easily be ripped back and re-knitted but if I don't have to I'd rather not.

Nope. because I am working with the two circulars, I can start or stop the yarn at either end. Watch again and you will see what I did.

It is personal preference. I use double pointed needles, 2 circulars or magic loop. they all work pretty much the same for me. But each person has their preference and that is just fine. Knitting is for everyone and there is no one right or wrong way. Happy knitting.
