The Vanceboro Bridge was once an important bridge between Canada, and the United States of America - and the Germans actually bombed it during World War I in a calamity of events. Join the 3/4 show as we play Citation Needed to find out how it all unfolded! Special thanks to channel member Cits for sharing this story with me.

So, my dad grew up in Danforth, ME, which is only like half an hour from Vanceboro. And after watching this video for the first time, I asked my grandmother (my dad's mom) about this event, and she told me the entire story from my grandfather's father's perspective. Gerald Greene, I believe his name was, and as it turned out, he was the one of the railroad policemen that took Werner Horn into custody. As a matter of fact, it was his very first day on the job. Later, in 1917, he was drafted into the army, and fought in the trenches. After my grandfather was born in 1938, he was drafted again into the army in 1941 and was assigned as a tank engineer in North Africa. He rose to the position of tank commander, and after the war in Africa was over, he was transferred to Operation Overlord during the D-Day invasion. He stormed Omaha Beach in the 3rd wave, and he was told to leave all of his kit on the boat, because he would find everything he needed on the beach from dead soldiers.

"Fun fact": the guy at the embassy, von Papen, later became Hitlers vice chancelor. One of the people charged at the Nürnberg trial.

Well I guess that's evidence against Hitler. He was never going to succeed in his "third reich", not with Von "Failed-to-get-a-single-bridge-blown-up-in-the-last-war" as his vice chancelor. He's probably the one who suggested they try to double cross the Soviets and invade them during the Winter, because his last Winter Ops went so well.

So cool to see Hyce and the other 3/4 of an idiot cover a topic involving my province! I was wondering why Vanceboro sounded familiar.. it's right across the border from the rail hub of McAdam, New Brunswick, which has a STUNNING chateau-style railway station/hotel that the small town just restored recently. Also, all the railroading Hyce brought me into inspired me to take a book out of the local library on the rail history of my New Brunswick - it is expansive for such a small province! So many interesting stories. From milling tycoons building loads of narrow-gauge to profit from the government subsidy of land-for-rail-mile, to trying to build a rail line from the Bay of Fundy to the St. Lawrence to bypass the winter ice, to building a SHIP RAILWAY to CARRY WHOLE SHIPS 25KM OVER LAND from the Bay of Fundy to the Northumberland Strait (the Chignecto Ship Railway) and more.. it's so cool knowing all of this happened here! A shame it all got torn up in the 80s.. P.S. No Brett, it's in New Brunswick, not Newfoundland! Newfoundland's the island on the far far eastern end, and was still an independent British colony at the time believe it or not. You probably got mixed up with their St. John's vs our Saint John.. it happens a lot..
