🚂 All Aboard! Join me on a captivating journey to Rügen Island in Germany, where history and scenic beauty converge on the remarkable Rügensche Bäderbahn. In this video, we'll embark on an enchanting ride through picturesque landscapes, guided by the nostalgic allure of steam-powered locomotives and century-old coaches.
🌊 As we traverse the 24-kilometer route of the Rügen narrow-gauge railway, witness the mesmerizing transition from rolling countryside to the breathtaking Baltic Sea coastline. This historic railway, which commenced operations in 1895 and once spanned over 100 kilometers, now offers a glimpse into the past with its charming steam engines. Traveling on a 750mm narrow gauge track, the train gracefully runs along at a maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour.
🚉 Our adventure kicks off at Bergen auf Rügen, where we board a diesel train bound for Lauterbach Mole. Here, the standard-gauge railway shares rails with the narrow-gauge tracks, creating a unique three-rail line.
🎟️ From Lauterbach Mole we start our journey with a narrow-gauge railway to Göhren. A mere two-minute stroll from the railway station leads us to the scenic seashore, where a 350-meter-long pier extends into the Baltic Sea. Current pier was erected in 1993, its predecessor from 1898 was a staggering kilometer in length. Despite the unique Baltic climate, visitors often brave the waters even when the air temperature dips below 20 degrees Celsius.
🏞️ Nearby, an inviting trail winds through the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve, offering a pleasant journey to the Nordperd cape.
🏙️ Our return journey takes us to Binz, a bustling city adorned with early 20th-century hotels and villas. Binz boasts not one but two railway stations-one for the narrow-gauge railway and another for standard-gauge trains. Its accessibility via high-speed IC and ICE trains makes it a popular destination for travelers from all corners of Germany.
🌉 Adding to its charm, Binz also features a 370-meter-long pier, constructed in 1994, that beckons visitors to stroll and soak in the splendid sea views.
