It is really really good to see Germany play with 343 instead of 4231. Let’s make it clear, Germany achieved nothing in the past couple of years is not due to the problem of offence but in defence. 343 gives you a comfortable control of the game, Denmark could barely pose any threat to us, expect from the goal. How many saves had Neuer given last night? When we played with 4231, we were always exposed when the opponent counter-attacks. By leaving 3 defenders in behind, especially with Rudiger who is speedy and well-adapted to 343, we can probably “on the basis of staying clean at the back, then look for scores in the front”. We cannot have that comfort in 4231. Especially we are in a tough group with France and Portugal. No one would argue that, if we lost to one of them, there is a great danger that Germany would be eliminated. However, if we draw to them in the first two matches, we can still proceed if we win over Hungary. It is very very important to “stay clean at the back, then look for scores in the front” in the first two matches. So, we need to start with 343 in the first two matches, and change to 4231 if we concede first. And in the final match, we can change to 4231 if a win is must. If the situation had settled down in the first two matches, we can play with a conservative 343. Individually, I think Sane should be dropped. He is out of form in the last match, and out of form in the last season at well, just like the scoreless Muller during the last World Cup. Since we have so many quality attackers, eg Werner and Havertz, I see no reason to stick to Sane. Gnarby is not playing good too, maybe they are not so familiar to 343, and the wingers are not familiar to staying in the half-space. 343 is the formation of Chelsea, the winner of EC, whilst 4231 is the formation of Bayern. Therefore, Werner and Havertz are better options for 343. Unless we play 4231, Sane and even Gnarby should be put to the bench. Furthermore, Ginter is preferred to Klosterman. Ginter showed he is both a better defender and attacker than Klosterman. Ginter created several chance when he pushed to play as wing back. He crossed well and often sprinted to the penalty area for headers. Neuhaus is definitely the future for Germany, and probably can be the starting XI now. Compared to Kroos and Gundogan, Neuhaus covers more area and is more attack-minded. Maybe Neuhaus is not recognized as world-class player yet, but he should be given a chance. Gundogan had a good season in MC, and he scored plenty of goals, so there is no reason to not start him. In the pecking order, Gundogan maybe ahead of Neuhaus, but Neuhaus should be ahead of Kroos. So, here is my preferred starting XI Werner Muller Havertz Gosens Kimmich Neuhaus Ginter Rudiger Sule Hummels Neuer If we are leading 1-nil or 2-nil, Gundogan can sub in for Neuhaus, to offer more control in possession. Gnarby and Sane can sub in as well to offer better counter-attack. Here is the preferred starting XI when 4231 is needed. Werner Gnarby Muller Havertz Kimmich Gundogan Gosens Rudiger Sule Ginter Neuer Goretzka would be an ideal replacement if one of the front three get injuries in 343, and can replace Muller in 4231. Yes, Goretzka is preferred to Gnarby and Sane in 343.

Jogi doesn't know when to sub. Sane was obviously struggling to in this game why not just sub in havertz or something

It is really really good to see Germany stick with 343 instead of 4231. But some lessons are learnt in the past two matches. 1. Sane should never be trusted again. In fact, he had a poor season in Bayern Munich. Havertz, Muller, Werner, Gnarby should all start prior to Sane. Sane lost too much possession, even the opponent is Latvia. And he created little chances comparing with Havertz and Muller. Havertz is in top form now, and form is more important. All knows Muller is a legend already, but when he lost his form in the past World Cup, he should not be started automatically. 2. The double pivot of Kroos and Gundogan is secure enough, thus it is nice to shift Kimmich to play as RWB. However, the function of Kimmich is limited when he stay wide. I suggest that, Kimmich and Ginter should keep on playing RWB and RB in defence, but Kimmich should change to a centralised inverted-RB in offence while Ginter provide the width down the right. Then, Kimmich can play like a defensive midfield, like Walker in Man City, and he can give his signature chip-through balls into the penalty area. 3. Just like the case of Sane, Sule lacks the form and he is too slow. Rudiger, Ginter, Hummels should be in the starting XI, and Koch should be ahead of Sule the pecking order. When you play against Mbappe and Ronaldo, Sule is not a good option. 4. Neuhaus should be given more chance instead of Can as well. When Kroos or Gundogan needs to take some rest, Neuhaus is a better substitute than Can. Here is my ideal formation against France and Portugal: Havertz Werner Muller Gosens Kroos Gundogan Kimmich Rudiger Hummels Ginter Neuer (Kimmich and Ginter can shift their position) Sub: Gnarby is the first attacking option. Neuhaus can add some mobility an Sule can add some heading advantages in the last minutes. When we can comfortably proceed after the first two games, Neuhaus, Sane and Sule can start against Hungary if some players need a rest.
