My favorite part about the dynamite is how instead of treating it like a generic grenade in most fps games (typically very rare, can only carry 3 at a time) they basically just turn it into a makeshift grenade launcher with how abundant it is also you can literally blast jump with it

Half-Life 1's arsenal was similar in a way, since a lot of the guns were weird, & even the standard FPS stuff had spins you don’t see anywhere else.

Did you know that in the Beta, the pitchfork had a rocket-launcher like secondary attack? That certainly would make it stand out from other knife/crowbar/fist competitors.

The Life Leech's altfire already sounds good on paper, but it gets better: after a while of it being planted, it _dramatically_ kicks up the fire rate and makes mincemeat out of anything. Including that sturdy bellend Cheogh. And even if you're out of ammo, all you have to do is pay a 25 point health tax for so much firepower. I really need to play Death Wish to really stretch this thing's legs again...

blood is one of my favorite games ever too. sadly i dont think the first part of cultic really lived up to it. one of the big reasons for that was the weapons. blood just nailed it. the mystical weapons really compliment the regular, improvised, and high tech weapons, making for a very unique and full arsenal of weapons that are all very fun to use and have their own niche.
@bigsky1047

@@unityofvitality-5875 that didnt ruin it for me but i can see why it might turn someone off of the game. personally i played it on hard and didnt have too bad of a time but i was also taking advantage of headshots wherever i could. weird that they give you two weapons that are good for headshotting, the lever action rifle and the actual sniper of the game, the fg42. the weapons of cultic just arent as good as bloods, though with the ending of the first part of cultic, maybe well get to see some weird shit that will be cool.
@plesbeans7440

i disagree. hatchet: utility, great for a shorter closer attack when you are low on ammo, and much more ammo efficient than shooting bear traps pistol: heavy hitting all-rounder weapon lever action: mid to long range powerhouse, absolutely deranged and manic shotgun: at close range will convert all of your enemies cells directly into red blood cells, anything past mid-range, ehhh not so much STEN - short to mid-range repeating firepower, great for dealing with some bosses dynamite: practically a grenade launcher with how versatile they are molotovs: much more situational, but much more powerful grenade launcher: practically a rocket launcher with how powerful it is MG42 or whatever: sniper rifle that gives off the same satisfaction that you get when you perfectly slice something into 2 completely even halves. flamethrower or whatever: weakest weapon in the arsenal, so by cultics standards, still pretty good
@bigsky1047
@bigsky1047 Жыл бұрын
@@plesbeans7440 I never said the weapons weren’t good just that they weren’t as good as blood’s. Blood still did most of what cultic tries to do but better. Cultic should be better than blood but really isn’t, at least to me. Most weapons in blood are still more satisfying to use compared to the weapons in cultic, but cultics weapons are still good.

I feel like _Blood_ represents the logical progression of the ridiculous and fun weapons introduced in _Rise of the Triad._ Lots of missile weapons ranging from the usual to a wild "drunk" missile, firebombs and firewalls… And then, there's the Excalibat - a mixed melee and ranged weapon. And of course, God Mode and Dog Mode. Woof.

I always liked how the first Halo actually inverted the FPS Pistols thing (starter=faster ROF+low damage+high capacity/later useful one=slower+more damage+headshots+lower capacity) by having the first weapon in the game be basically the Half Life revolver, but with double capacity, a scope, and an actually usable ammo pool, and then having the gun that would otherwise be the starting pistol in another game, the Covenant's Plasma Pistol weapon (with its spammable, low-damage primary fire and very deep magazine) not only having its deep and reload-free ammo pool tempered with an overheat mechanic, but also an incredibly useful charged shot capable of not only depleting an Elite's body shield but also the projected shield of a Jackal as well.

Viscerafest does some really cool stuff in this vein too. No secondary fire options but the shotgun pellets are low power explosives, the rocket launcher only causes an explosion if it *doesn’t* hit an enemy, grenade launcher grenades spawn a bunch of mini grenades when they explode, and there’s even a gun that fires pellets of toxic gas to chip away at enemies (and also to stunlock certain enemy types). All at least pretty creative, all fill distinct tactical roles.

I wish you had talked more about how the weapons functioned during the 1.0 release of blood. The flaregun used to stun enemies giving the player the ability to avoid being shot and the voodoo doll alt fire didn't drain all of the ammo, instead, it consumed 20 spirit ammo and damaged enemies in a group.

Amid evil also has really unique weapons. They're all magic based and function in a way similar yet different to their standard counterparts. For example the starting melee axe is EXTREMELY STRONG and is capable of pulling nearby enemies toward you. When you get your "rage meter" full this weapon transforms into a helicopter that grinds enemies into paste and can also propell you extremely quickly through water.

This is awesome! I first got into Blood way back in time specifically because of the presentation of these guns :D I saw a couple of screenshots of Blood online, one was showcasing the Tommy gun, spitting lots of brass everywhere, with that dramatic muzzleflash, as the player fired upon cool, creepy hooded enemies, that also carried normal looking firearms. That made it seem really unique to me, somehow. I love the weird flare gun/revolver thing, how satisfying it is to throw the dynamite, as Caleb maniacally laughs. Even the most basic "super shotgun" has a cool feature, that lets you choose if you want to fire both shots at once or not. Very cool sounds for the shells hitting the ground too. The napalm launcher, the voodoo doll, etc. It all made me feel badass without making the enemies seem pathetic. Their weird cool/funny exclaims and screams are forever stuck in my head. For comparison; I really don't like they they way portray the Doom Slayer in Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal. It seems lame and corny to me. It just makes me feel bad for the enemies. Blood seems a lot more tasteful. On that note, I do enjoy feeling like an underdog, stuck in a unforgiving place. Kind of like original Half-Life. I guess I don't enjoy power fantasy much.
@GermanPeter
@GermanPeter Жыл бұрын
Oh man, I also despised how they portrayed the Slayer in the new Doom games. In 2016 it was fine, but in Eternal I just cringed so hard. I mean, they built him up as this machine of hatred that doesn't care about any lore or story, and then in the second game they have him kneeling to ancient kings and listening to long-winded monologues, and I'm just wondering... what the hell happened? Since when is this game about story? Sucked. I fully agree with the rest of what you said too!

Now that I recently got back to dabbling into Unreal 1998, I'd say it's arsenal is pretty cool. Sure, there's some bog standard weaponry such as the pistol (which can be fired faster by tilting it gangster style at the cost of accuracy with alt fire), the minigun (which again, can be fired faster with alt fire at the cost of accuracy) and the sniper rifle, but then there's more weapons which are unique to the game. Such as the ASMD rifle (or shock rifle for UT99) with a hitscan primary which pushes enemies back, and a sick alternate fire which fires an energy orb that when shot detonates into a more powerful explosion. There's an alien sawblade launcher which guides its blades with the alternate fire, like the rocket launcher from Half Life. A bio rifle which rapidly shoots blobs of explosive green goo in an arc which can be used to punish aggressive enemies, and an alt fire which charges up to make a bigger blob. The game's rocket launcher, the Eightball, may initially seem to be a bog standard rocket launcher, but you can load up to 6 rockets to fire, lock on to an enemy by hovering the crosshair over it, and can launch its rockets as bouncing grenades with the alternative fire. The Flak Cannon might as well be a beefed up super shotgun, a powerful primary which shreds anything with ricocheting molten flak, and a secondary which fires its shell as a grenade which explodes into more ricocheting molten flak. I'd say its one of the best sci-fi themed shotguns of all time. It may not be as creative or unique in comparison to Blood's, or say... Dead Space or Painkiller's arsenal, but the execution of it is what got me hooked to Unreal, and paved the way for it to be fleshed out into Unreal Tournament's arsenal. Too bad fucking Epic Games pulled all of the Unreal games of all the online storefronts because they need more Fortnite money.

I'm really excited for IllWill. The weapons are pretty fundamental for the most part, but they're balanced alongside eachother really well. Plus it has a couple really interesting spins on classics. The Shotgun is good at hitting weakpoints and thoroughly rewarding for meatshotting them. The Double Barrel...is about what you'd expect from a Double Barrel. Compliments the Shotgun by rewarding positioning over aim. The Microwave Gun is basically your Chaingun, but with a *really interesting twist* of rewarding focused fire on one target by turning them into an explosive on death - dealing massive damage to their surroundings. The Grenade Launcher is a Rocket Launcher but it requires accounting for an arc and they don't drown you in ammo for it. I like it. The Leech Gun is the most interesting. Basically Blood's Flare Gun, except the longer they stick to enemies, the more you'll heal when you pick them back up from the enemy's corpse - and you can overheal with them. It's a very interesting lineup so far, complimenting an equally interesting cast of enemies that offer their own unique set of challenges and tactics to play around. I can't wait for the release.

personally I think hedon and half life 2 have amazing arsenal designs, in hl2 every weapon has a clear purpose that you will use throughout the game, with the only exception being the ar2 replacing the smg (even tho the smg grenades are still super viable!) and with hedon each weapon does its own thing with fun spins and twists on all of them that its just a joy to get a new weapon or find a niche use for an alt fire!
@GermanPeter
@GermanPeter Жыл бұрын
Yes, Half-Life 2's weapons are really nice, a bit too basic and uninteresting (literally just pistols, shotgun and smgs), but they work well. The Gravity Gun is a really unique weapon and is much more interesting than anything from HL1 in my opinion. As for Hedon, I agree that the weapons work well, they're just so, SO basic for a fantasy setting. I didn't like playing that game for the combat, honestly. Only a few weapons were actually interesting, like the flamethrower or the acid/ gas gun. The rest? Yawn.

Another shooter that comes to my mind that tried (and, dare I say it, succeeded) to bring variety to the video game arsenal is Painkiller. A relatively small number of weapons, but most weapons have not only secondary fire, but also a combo attack. For example, the Stakegun's grenade (secondary fire) can be impaled on a stake (primary fire) while it is midair to create a makeshift explosive arrow.

Blood was a very, very good game for me - and i had it as a kid! I had so many great moments with the game; my version was before the plasma pak, so some stuff was missing - like the napalm alt fire. But nevertheless, i remember how scared i was of the Phantasm enemy, and how i hated the hell hounds (since they can set you on fire). It was pretty unique for his weapons and i strongly agree. Some levels also were stunning for their setting. One thing i loved about it, just the little things really: the proximity mine would give out a loud "CLICK!" before exploding, and it was the best "Oh, SH- - " moment. Barely the time to throw an expletive and you are up in the air. It was also hilarious to do the same to other enemies, but of course, they wouldn't always walk over it. Good times. Good times.

Some notes about Blood weapons: >Circle-strafing with the Pitchfork is actually more effective than back-and-forth. Especially since most melee enemies (Zombies in particular) have a very, VERY narrow attack range, and your reach with the Pitchfork is very short. >The Blood Shotgun is honestly very comparable to Quake's shotguns - especially in terms of fire rate. >All Cultists have a sort of pseudo-painstate where they can still move and duck, but they will never fire back. I call it a "Suppressed State," and it's triggered by even the smallest amount of impact damage. This is where the Tommygun excels. Its dps is relatively subpar, but it dominates Cultists like nothing else. And that's also the advantage of the spray - it can suppress groups of cultists simulataneously. >If you want to bounce dynamite but don't want to wait for it to go off, you can just round the corner and shoot it to expediate the process. If you're quick, you can also shoot dynamite right as an enemy Cultist throws it (though this is usually impractical unless you're dealing with the green ones). >Proximity Bombs (and other trap weapons) are "map knowledge" weapons. You use them when you where the ambushes are in a level, and don't want to deal with them. Toss em down in front of a monster closet and let them walk into their death. First playthroughs by their nature won't find them nearly as useful. >The Spray Can pierces enemies, and basically every undead is extremely vulnerable to fire damage, so the primary can be MUCH more cost-effective. Of course, the Spray Can is still bugged in the Fresh Supply sourceport and will not pierce (though the flame particles stay active on the ground, making them decent for dealing with rats and spiders), so I would recommend maining the secondary there. >The Tesla alt is pretty garbo. You have to hit a lot of enemies to get value out of it. Though it does guarantee a decent stun time. I'd highly advise saving tesla ammo for the tankiest enemies that you don't want to deal with - like Hellhounds and maybe Phantasms that you don't wanna spend a giant chunk of your shotgun shells on. >If you play on the nBlood sourceport, you can turn on Alpha Weapon Behaviors, which will restore the Life Leech's life drain effect. Using it on the right enemies, it can just about offset the hp cost, making it a nearly infinite-ammo weapon. You also get impact damage on the flare gun, which enables Cultists one-shots with it on Extra Crispy. But you will lose the Napalm Launcher alt (not a massive loss, you have ways to compensate for it). >While the primary for the Voodoo Doll doesn't kill Cheogh as fast, he's still EXTREMELY vulnerable to it, and you can save a lot of Doll ammo if you poke him down.

Sure, you CAN do that, but it's considered a rookie technique. Doomguy does it right, using his support hand to reload (a pro's technique). 4:27 Did napalm exist in 1928? Zippo lighters first came out in the early 1930s. We can just say it's an "alternate history" 1928. 6:25 Was it ever explained why Doomguy fires his pistol left-handed when he uses all other weapons right-handed? 11:18 Aerosol cans were invented in 1927, so they did exist in 1928, but were still a new concept. 13:53 So Caleb was the first Soldier/Commando with a turret-based "action skill?!" 15:41 Snarks are great against black ops ninja assassins. 27:31 Painkiller had some interesting weapons. Each of them was a combo weapon.

Go play on the easier difficulties! Also you can crouch to mostly avoid hitscan fire.

The funny thing is for me at least when it comes to top 3 favorite weapons in Blood, by order it is: Pitchfork, Sawed-Off, TNT. haha While I'm not sure about other unique arsenals for video games, I would love to see you try out this standalone Duke3D mod called AMC Squad, would love to see how you feel towards the weapons, characters and story building since your content are quite entertaining. :D

I think you give too much credit to Blood for doing what other shooters at the time did pretty well. Blood weapons just really well balanced in there own game. But I don't think Blood is the game definition of originality. Yes, it has some original weapons, but most of them are variations of classic weapon ideas. And your point make it sounds like Blood variation are more creative, than others from other games, which isn't the case, for old one's at least (Shadow Warrior, for example, was released a year before Blood, but weapons, such as Riot Cannon and Nuke launcher feels more original, than Blood's double-barrel) . But I agree with your opinion on nowadays Boomer Shooters, they have this problem of lacking originality in their weapons.

I really dislike how you label so many things as "perfect" as if isn't a concept that is unreachable by design
@GermanPeter

How very pedantic. When something is "perfect", I'm saying that it's perfect TO ME. For someone that prefers shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield, any oldschool shooter would be far from "perfect" for them. Maybe don't take these labels so seriously.

The Dynamite is my favorite because of its skill ceiling; once you're *good* at chucking dynamite in Blood, you can basically become a god.
