A few comments on this. I read your blog and wanted to make a few points. I own all three brands and there's a few things to note about each. 1: The older model NWS combimax pliers had a nail puller notch @ the end of the pliers which was really handy. This has been changed to a diamond pattern which works well but I miss that feature. 2: The Knipex finish of this model (and the blue/red handle which is the version I own) does require maintenance of the finish as it will get surface rust whereas the NWS finish does not rust in my experience even with extreme use. 3: The knipex dipped handle finish here is easy to clean and doesn't hold much dirt as does the blue/red handles they offer. Although the blue/red handle and the NWS handles are both very comfy the NWS composite mixed design grips are HORRIBLE for holding dirt. They look nice initially but they soak up ALLLLLL the dirt and look horrible if that matters do you. 4: This is a personal opinion but if you have a mixed workload it's hard to beat the NWS combimax due to the various features it has--the new ones now have a crimper on the rear of the joint too... very nice. NWS also has real nice pricing for the base model grip which holds dirt less and works just as well. That said you really can't go wrong with the other two brands. I have a 180mm Gedore base dip handle combo plier with the matte gray finish and really like that model too. I have the 200mm Blue/Red handle Knipex and that is my workhorse. I use it as a hammer even and it hasn't loosened up.

Thanks for taking the time to comment, you have a lot of valid points. Haven't used them enough or in corrosive environments to see which finish corrodes faster, but I always oil the tools after I use them. I would agree that the NWS pliers would eventually fill up with dirt. I have been mostly using those for cleaner jobs. You can't really beat the price of the NWS pliers and as you said can't really go wrong with any of these models.

The plastic dipped handles are much better for a side pouch on a tool belt bag. The extra plastic on the other handles will prevent the tool from sliding into the pouch deep enough to keep them from falling out. Its mostly a matter of personal preference, but I think a good quality plastic dip handle is far superior to the formed plastic handle.

Really like your reviews. I'm a huge knipex fan. Absolutely love them. I buy all kinds of pliers and cutters. Knipex precision pliers and cutters are amazing also. Very pricey but you get what you pay for most of the time. I really like there multi component grips. There very durable and feel great. You can always tell the attention to engineering and detail in knipex products. Anyone who knows anything about good tools knows knipex

Yes, I do like the dipped handles but for the main reason of being the easiet to clean. I started on a video comparing the different knipex handle types which I will get around to finishing some day. I will look out for a vintage Bosch angle grinder. I don't see too many of those around. Angle grinders always seem to be beat up to the point they are thrown in the garbage.

Awesome review as always. Knipex is an outstanding company, and surprisingly affordable for the quality. The only NWS pliers I prefer over Knipex are the side cutters. The ones that Irwin re-brands. NWS absolutely nailed the grips. They're so good you almost don't even want to put them down. Keep up the good work sir. 👍

At the bike workshop where I work we have NWS pliers that have joints similar to those of Knipex and Gedore in your video. Best pliers we have, although we don't have Knipex pliers. Amazing handle comfort. Never had any issues with gripping, the joint is the best of all pliers we have. Cutting performance I never tried on tough stuff since we have special cable cutting pliers that I use for that. (SRAM has by far the best bike cable cutting pliers btw)

it's good to see that your knipex has a tight joint. I've had several that had loose joints. matter of fact I've got a linesman pair that you can actually hear a click when you move it. when I first started buying them this looseness almost made me give up on knipex. I don't know what I will do with the linesman pair.
@GermanToolReviews
@GermanToolReviews 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's bad. I would have returned/exchange the Knipex ones with loose joints since I believe this would be a manufacturing defect. Maybe I'm lucky, but I've never had anything wrong with any Knipex product I have bought and probably have a dozen or so pliers from them.

Like light-colored carpets

Problems you had with slipping on gedore and wobbly rivet are most likely caused by chrome plating, you would have the same situation with other two brands and their chrome plated variants of tools.

What supplier do you use for that awesome PTFE insulated shielded coax wire?!? (Same supplier as all your other Mil-Spec wire?) I HAVE to know!! Would be a HUGE help..!! Finding great deals on that stuff has been challenging for me to find, if there are even “grab bags” for “scrap” wire like you mentioned, this would also be highly highly fruitful for me..! Hope all is well! I’ve learned so much from your vids and you’ve given me such great insight to make informed purchases for high quality tools, thank you a MILLION! Cheers

From this video, I can say with no doubt that your NWS pliers were overtightened. I'm using 2 NWS pliers since some years. They were perfect out of the box and they are perfect now, after a lot of abuse. About the cutting performance test, I can add that I have used my pliers to cut a hardened nail with no clear damage. I can even cut thin paper with them. Not a NWS fan, but I think that NWS beats Knipex hands down, but the variety of tools and the quality control is not as good as Knipex. For the BEST combination pliers, I would choose NWS, just my 2c.

I've been using and abusing Knipex pliers and cutters for years now. Got a set of knipex pliers from my granddad, all steel no plastic or rubber handle, and they still work very well. granted their cutting ability is quite poor now, but thats to be expected after 30 years. My knipex cutters are also a dream to work with and very, very sharp. Same with the circlip pliers, the knipex are simply the best.

I bought a pair of Knipex linesman pliers with the composite handles to replace a pair of Kleins that I [temporarily] misplaced. I really like the Knipex as they seem to fit my hand just a little better than the Klein pliers but it terms of day-to-day use for a non-pro, I don't see that much difference. While I understand you want to review German tools, my initial thought is why does a guy want to hunt down a pair of Knipex instead of stopping at Home Depot for a pair of Kleins? I'm wondering if you might want to consider throwing in a commonly available "American" tool in with your mix.
@GermanToolReviews
@GermanToolReviews 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah there are plenty of good tools still made in the USA. I have some Kleins as well as a ton of vintage Craftsman tools. I think last time I went to home depot I had trouble finding the Kleins because they don't put them in the hand tool isle, but instead in the electrical department! The point of this channel isn't to put down tools from other countries, but instead to fill a void of a perceived lack of review for German-brand tools.

I appreciate the pie chart. Also, the "feels good in the hands" reviews by tool shills is negated apparently quantified properly by this method, so long as the grip performance is objectively 20%. Uh... reading back that last sentence seems overly pedantic, but just saying.... grip performance is important, but so many other reviews seem to bias that topic way too much. Sadly the only way to properly test cut performance is to work the tool to it's failure point, and that would be a pity.
@GermanToolReviews
@GermanToolReviews 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah a lot of it is going to be subjective and some people may arrive at different conclusions. I definitely like to buy all my tools because then I don't feel obligated to give a positive review and to make sure the company doesn't send a "tuned" unit that does not reflect what a normal consumer would be getting. This is why you don't see many very expensive tools on this channel because I'm cheap. I didn't really take it to failure, but I think I would need a hydraulic press or a vise to get any more force out of the pliers! Not a bad idea for a future video, eventually I think the handles would snap before anything else.

For cutting copper wire the NWS would be fine, but their edge durability is crap so I would advise against much else. I have the NWS Fantasticos and the edge retention is just awful, granted I do cut heavier gauge wire with them. The only NWS tool I think I would really recommend is the pistol grip combination pliers. For everything else, Knipex all the way. Oh, and the NWS warranty is good for nothing. It's supposedly 5 years but I never could get them to warranty my pliers after maybe 1-2 years. Knipex on the other hand I believe is lifetime warranty.
@GermanToolReviews
@GermanToolReviews 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah you will generally find the warranty for most German Tool companies is generally just against manufacturing defects and not wear and tear. You will also find this is the case with nearly all tool companies but merely hide it down in the fine print as " defective workmanship or material."

It is hard to go wrong with Knipex. I assume when you say 4" you are talking about overall length? That would be a pretty small needle nose pliers at 4 inches. The smallest that Knipex makes for needle nose is 125mm in length (5 inches) with part number 25 01 125 (snipe nose radio pliers). If you want one without cutters look at part number 37 21 125 (precision mechanics gripping pliers).

+German Tool Reviews You can use Amazon.DE, the german branch of Amazon. The credentials for Amazon.COM are working too. Products sold by Amazon directly can be sent over to the US in most cases (you'll see a "can be shipped to: your adress" or can't be shipped). And the prices are lower than in the US, but you'll not see the end-price there. The shown prices include german VAT (19%) which is refunded if the items are delievered to other countries. Btw. That works with all Amazon sites. Some things are cheaper, some are not, but this is a good way to get things that are not available in your country. But shipping takes a bit longer of course, it's a long way over the big pond. The paying methods and delivery adresses are already deposited (if you have entered them on the american branch of Amazon, so you don't need to enter them again. Actually in Germany the Knipex are cheaper than the NWS, we're talking about 1 or 2€. Knipex are round about 18,49€ (22,73$) for the NWS and 16,57€ (20,37$) for the Knipex 02 01 200. The Gedore are 21,91€ (26,93$).

Lol, you can't knock the Knipex for having "inferior" handles when you ORDERED them that way! Those are the most basic, entry level handles Knipex offers.

You did a very through eval. Could it have been more tech sure but hey its your test and quite through IMO. the biggest issue was picking different models that had different features. Take the Kinpex. You chose thin dipped handles and standard finish but the Gregory had chrome plating and the NWS PTTFE designer comfort handles. So Kinpex was basically using its base level model cutters where the other were the premium model for lack of better terms. I think if you had picked the chrome plated Kinpex with comfort or the isolated dipped which is much thicker you would have seen a difference in the areas the Kinpex rated down. I think its clear to all the Kinpex is just superior brand. I actually only have a few Kinpex so I am no fan boy. But was a licensed commercial mechanical electrician for years. If I was back in the trade professional there is no question without proof otherwise of superiority my default for all cutters would Kinpex. Sad to say USA Kliens is a shadow of its former self in terms of quality for its hand tools. In fact they are only a step above the China knock offs you get at Harbor Freight. Not to mention sadly HF actually has a much better warranty.u Again I think you did a very good job and since you had to pay for the tools yourself its hard to fault the differences in models and you did briefly mention this. Good job
